Veteran Posts: 142 Location: Victoria, Vancouver Island, BC Canada | Nice to see the pic of the 'Inner Harbour' here in Victoria BC. This is the old 'Coho' Blackball Ferry loading ramp opposite the provincial Parliament Buildings circa 1960. The terminal is now on the other side of the Harbour currently undergoing an upgrade. This has been a nostalgic link between Victoria BC and Port Angles Wa. since 1959. It still runs today virtually unchanged from the day it was launched. The Butchart Gardens have been around since the early half of the 20th Century and are World Famous.....if you're ever in the Pacific Northwest, hop on the Coho and drop in for a visit.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Three photosl above, with the sign "Butchart Gardens" is in my town, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. YOu can see both a 1960 Plymouth, a 57 Dodge, and if you look close a red 1960 Polara 2 door hardtop in the second row from right. They are waiting to board the COHO Ferry to Port Angeles, Washington, in Victoria's downtown Inner Harbour. The buildings in the background are the provincial Legislature. The COHO ferry still runs daily from Victoria to Port Angeles, I've been on it many times.

I think I spy a '57 Windsor in the parking lot. Expert Posts: 1288 | Jim -- An interesting comment. Back in those days prosperity came at a pretty stiff price. The house I was raised in was just about three blocks north of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company's Pueblo steel mill, a half-block north of the Arkansas River, two blocks south of the meat packing plant, three blocks east of the railroad roundhouse and yards (Pueblo was a division point, so they were extensive), and three blocks west of the sewage disposal plant. The air there did have "body." When the coke plant was going full blast, families had to take their wet laundry inside and have it dry in the basement (no clothes dryers then). When the weather was very cold, the gas company would divert gas from residential areas to the mill as the town's livelihood depended on it; besides, just about every house had a coal stove, a wood stove, or a wood-burning fireplace. The mill's whistle ran the day of even us kids: off to school with the 7:00 AM blast; begin lunch with the noon whistle; end lunch with the one at 12:30; and even in the summer, better be home by that at 7:00 PM. The movie, "A Christmas Story," pretty much reflects life then. I seem to remember a second-grader (who best should remain anonymous) telling an innocent first-grader, "Lick that black iron railing. It tastes just like licorice." That second-grader was also told by his father, "You can't have a Daisy Red Ryder B-B gun. You'll shoot your eye out!" Joe

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | While we are thinking back to the 'old days'... I was thinking of the old days and why things seemed so different then, maybe it was just because we were lower middle class and didn't have much more than the basics so it didn't take much to impress us.... but it seemed like getting a new car had a magic to it that just isn't there today. Same with many other things, to get a transistor radio was like a whole world opening up. For a while the coolest thing in my bedroom was a 5 tube radio I could listen to while falling asleep. A friend of mine had a CLOCK radio which I thought was simply amazing. My point being that it didn't seem like it took a whole lot to create "magic" in the world... a clock radio was like magic, getting a bike with TWO speeds for my paper route was like getting a magic maserati. It just seems like a lot of the "magic" has gone out of the world. Everything today is taken for granted.

I had thought that the change came from different line locations due to state legalization of the quads. Perry Dad was a DeSoto-Plymouth dealer back then and I remember all of the first production '57s had single headlights. I can't remember when the quads became available or why although there were some kinda laws that had an effect on the timing for when quads were allowed. And once they were, there was no going back. This only affected the Firedomes and Fireflites as I recall. I don't think any Adventurers were built with singles and, of course, none of the '57 Firesweeps had quads.

Expert Posts: 3967 Location: DFW, TX | It wasn't random. Firedomes/Flites being delivered to states where quads were outlawed would get duals. All Adventurers got the quads. All Firedomes got... well, Dodge headlights.

Everything today is taken for granted. ============================== The rate in which mental stimulus comes at us has increased exponentially. I began to notice it as a kid in the late 60's and through the 70's ... a lot of "old" amusement mediums were pretty corny and new stuff seemed "edgy" ... which, ironically, it too seems really corny now. But I noticed it a lot when we moved to the farm in 1969 and there was a distict difference between how the kids from the sticks had fun and how the kids from the 'burbs had fun. We stick-kids had a lot of chores and our amusement was largely self-made ... building forts, exploring the woods, barns, whereas the kids at school who lived in the subdivisions were highly attuned to TV shows and media-based amusements I was having this discussion recently with a client, about how I just can't stand modern action movies where the scenes shift so rapidly my poor old school brain can hardly keep focus before it changes again. They give me a headache ! I cited the original Star Wars movie vs. the recent ones. People seem to want that fast-paced visual and consider my idea of a good movie being "corny" and dull, much like I thought 50's TV corny and dull. Guess I am just an old curmudgeon ....

But not all modern films are made for the 'smart phone set'. Last night I revisited Moonrise Kingdom. What a charming, wonderful & beautifully made piece of modern cinema.

As a kid in the 1950's never had a radio (transistor radios came in the early 1960's) but I had a crystal set. No electricity needed, just one wire attached to the bed springs for the antenna, a second to the heat vent for a ground and a set of headphones. No volume control, but you had a choice of AM stations. Could listen to music in the dark while supposedly sleeping, and no one else could hear it. At Christmas most gifts were either clothing or toys you made things with - meccano sets, plastic bricks, etc. No electronic wonders, just stuff you used your own imagination to create.
