Inactive by user's request Location: Las Vegas, Nevada | Photo was taken during the World Series in 1957 whether or not you chose to believe that. I have others taken at the same time with newer cars. Why no 1957 cars are in that area is beyond me. The outer lots were seldom used after the opening season of 1954, until the World Series. Which is why the newspaper took this photo. I plan to scan the other photos taken at the same time, which contain 1957 cars. K.

Inactive by user's request Location: Las Vegas, Nevada | hemidenis - 2010-11-16 9:17 AM Yes seem more like NOV 56 to JAN 57 to me. Beside the 56 Chuby in the first row... Is that a 37 chuby? Stadium wasn't in use for baseball at that time and after November, lot would be likely be full of snow or the cars would be dirty from the frequent wet weather of that time of year. Back then, when the Green Bay Packers played occasional games in Milwaukee, the draw wasn't like it is in today's NFL. You could still head down to the stadium and purchase good seats the day of the day. That's a '55 Chevy next to the 1930s vehicle. K. Edited by Kenny J. 2010-11-16 5:33 PM

Terrific card, and what a selling point, a 1961 motel! Here are two vintage photos, the first features a well-worn '61 Plymouth and what appears to be an original gangster! Pete It's definitely a 62 Chrysler. Since the photo is in Canada, I'm going to venture that the car is NOT a Newport, definitely not a New Yorker or 300, as Newports and 300s weren't built in Canada until later. Canada was still building Windsor and Saratoga in 62, and the Saratoga had the same full length body side moldings as the US Newport while the Windsor had the short body side molding like the US 300, but without the 300 badge. So as this car is in Canada and has a full length body side molding I'm gonna say its a Canadian 1962 Saratoga. As to the gangster, take a look at the cheap suit he's wearing - I thought gangsters always wore the best. Edited by imopar380 2010-11-17 8:06 PM

That seems odd for a photo supposedly taken in the fall of 1957. Another photo, taken the same day is attached below. My County Stadium negatives are dated 1954 and 1957. Nothing in between. Inactive by user's request Location: Las Vegas, Nevada | Doctor DeSoto - 2010-11-18 7:21 PM I see 57 Dodge, Merc, Ford, and Nash in the few visible. Strange that the other pic has nary a 57 model in the entire parking lot ! Maybe they had "segregation" back then ? The "far lots" had cheaper parking than the "premium lots" closer to the stadium. But still, no reason for no '57s or '58s in that outer lot. The transit system ran special buses which picked up at certain areas and ran non-stop to the ballpark. Also, an existing streetcar line passed the location. The transit system built a siding and used to park dozens of trolley cars there. The people who parked halfway to the ballpark and took the special "stadium" buses and streetcars the rest of the way often got home much sooner than people who used to drive all the way there. The top negative dates from 1954 and was taken after the Green Bay Packers played a "home game" in Milwaukee. The embankment which the road cuts through was used by high speed interurban trolleys until June, 1951. Now I-94 cuts through the area. Is that dark car on the left a 1955 Mopar??? Location: Parts Unknown | Great photos, Kenny. The ball game goers look like they're dressed for an ice fishing tournament ! Looks like the Imperial driver is sitting on the pole that put the nice crunch in his car. He's done a remarkable job of keeping his shirt clean too ! The removal of so many trolley / interurban systems is depressing. Your pictures really are cool.

Inactive by user's request Location: Las Vegas, Nevada | October in Milwaukee is a mixed bag as far as weather is concerned. Sometimes cold mornings, mild afternoons and very cold nights. The amount of sun or clouds can determine which days are sweater, t-shirt or jacket days. Most U.S. transit systems were a money losing proposition after World War II. Fixed plant costs were high, traffic patterns were changing, downtown areas were becoming irrelevant in many cities, automobiles were becoming easier to afford and new trolley cars were becoming so expensive, none were built in the U.S. between 1952 and the late 1970s. No electric bus fleets were built for the North American market between 1955 and 1971. Only rapid transit rail cars were built during the late '50s, '60s and into the the '70s for urban transport. Diesel fuel for buses was cheap and no wire, track, substations, etc. had to be maintained. As much as I like trains and streetcars, I sometimes look at some light rail projects in the U.S. and ask myself, "What were they thinking?" But many of the new systems are practical and are doing well. You need a certain degree of population density and logical routing/destinations for fixed guide way transit to be successful. Whenever I visit Milwaukee, I find Downtown cleaner than it was when I was a child. But the bustle and excitement of my childhood days are long gone. In fact, most of the shopping centers/malls which initially replaced most of Downtown Milwaukee's retail market have since been replaced by newer malls. K.

Location: Parts Unknown | I did some work on the Northtown mall in Spokane last year. Coming in through a back access area I saw some beautiful terrazzo floors that had obviously been part of an old open air mall design and that this mall went back much farther than one might guess by looking at it today. I could just picture in my head scenes like the photos in this thread. Like you, I had a certain "excitement" for the world of my childhood that has been dulled by homogenous and boring design styles that have buried all that cool stuff. Going to a mall today is as interesting as a dental visit. But back in the day, I remember those terrazzo floors, the mile-high poles holding up space port looking roofs, and walls of mosaic tiles, sparkly glass, or Arizona sandstone, accented with jet- age light fixtures. Never mind what you might see in the parking lot ! Going shopping with Mom was actually a fun field trip ! In 1967 or so, my Dad traded in our 57 Bel Air wagon for a Mustang. I remember thinking this was not a good trade. In 1971 he took it to the next level of FTD and traded the Mustang in on a Pinto ! Even then I knew the world was doing a slow motion plane crash into the ocean of ugly and cheap. Edited by Doctor DeSoto 2010-11-19 6:04 AM
