That Sterling, IL photo looks like the '57 chebby owner parked a little too close to the tracks! Great photo!

Dave, that squished DeSoto above required me to skip ahead in my rotation to this DeSoto,
for a minute I thought they might be the same car, but no.

Anchorage Alaska in 1964, following the worst earthquake in U. S. history. At a magnitude of 9.2 on the Richter Scale in 1964, this is a great place to park Chebbies! And what about that car behind the barricades in the upper right corner?

That's a stripper "official-type" 4-door sedan; its occupants probably have little sense-of-humor, but they might
be interested in whatever it was that made those gouges alongside the roadway pavement.

The two "June 1958" photos are both strange, in that the first one was obviously not taken in the late spring
but, there is (still) abundant green grass on the ground, so, the grass would not appear to go dormant during
the late Fall; the Sun is not extremely low in the sky, and the woman does not appear to be heavily dressed.

When did proper women start to wear their winter mink stoles? October?

The next photo is really confusing, because the beautiful momma is appropriately (un-)dressed for June, but
check out the attire of her daughter---full-on winter gear.

The trees are fully leaved, but the house's grass looks like it's in full winter mode...(doesn't look to be
newly-planted), but the car now has the top boot installed on it, which implies that the top's been down
for a while, in the warm weather.

Several photos above, there are a couple of 1955 Imperial Limos, would that possibly be a presidential wife like Mamie Eisenhower looking out the window?

Dave, ... what is your connection with Renaware ?

Those dates are a little off .... Renaware did not move from Bellevue (center photo) to Redmond
(lower photo) until 82 or 83 ... maybe even a little later?)

At one time you could regularly see my old finned cars parked out front of both.

Interesting to read how you Neil see things / people around the around the car. There was another card.

OK; let's examine Mr. Happy Owner, above.

He appears to be in his late 50's, which is probably right in the middle of the market segment for 1957 New Yorker buyers.

That car would have cost $55K-$60K, in today's money, and it looks brand new in the photo.

Most people who bought new cars in the 50's paid cash for them; especially for the expensive models.

He dresses very stylishly, with a Western Bolo tie, which, in the 50's was not typically seen outside of the Southwestern
states (unless he was succoming to the influences of Davey Crockett [King of the Wild Frontier] or any of the other myriad
TV-cowboys), but, he appears comfortable in wearing that neck tie, and this photo was apparently a special event---he
may well have just bought that fine ride, as he is posing alongside it, in front of what appears to be a restaurant/bar.
(where his family might be celebrating the car's purchase?---something has induced him to pose, alone, next to his
new car).

He is definitely NOT your typical Corporation Man, in his Gray Flannel suit; he's not a boring guy, as evidenced by his choice
of (short-sleeved?) brown shirt, with that Donegal-plaid-looking coat, black dress pants, and a bolo tie, and in a neat hair cut.

He may have grown up in the Southwestern US, where he took his affinity for the wearing of bolo ties.

No cowboy boots on this man, but, he probably wouldn't mind wearing them.

His hands look like they've done their fair share of labor and he is a little bowed; he may be the owner of a construction trade
company; definitely a self-employed personna.

He exudes quiet self confidence, and a bit of a sense of humor; he's not embarrassed by having his photo be taken standing
alone outside of a restaurant, next to his new 'mount'---a convertible, btw....

His eyesight is good; no glasses seen anywhere around him, and he looks generally fit, altho 10 lbs over weight (30,
from his Army/Navy days).

Unless he's a retired officer, he didn't serve in WWII, but he could have served in Numero-Uno.

The jacket fits rather tightly around him, and the lapels are not 50's-thin, so he has had this Sports coat (no breast pocket
for a hankerchief) and definitely no side 'flap' pockets, although it has 3-buttons---and I can't see him wearing pants-to-match
with that jacket style)...for at least 10 years, but the lapels are not wide and peaked, like the suit jackets were in the mid 40's.

Except for the stomach, that jacket fits him perfectly around the neck/shoulders/wrists areas; it may well have been custom tailored,
which would explain its rather unique features (no pockets, but 3-buttons) .

And he lives somewhere in Michigan and has a beautiful 25 y.o. daughter and probably at least one grand child (with overly-
protective parents!).

He looks like he could have been one of those 1959 advertising-models who : "Drive cars that do what they look like they can do".

Guys, ... the dates on the photos reflect not when the pic was taken, but when
the film was developed. I kept film in my camera for months before the whole roll
was shot, and it often languished in a desk drawer for months longer until I had more
to take in for developing.

Yes and Ike is sitting back there too. When JFK was inaugurated in Jan. 1961 there was a terrific blizzard that hit the mid-Atlantic States. The outgoing President and First Lady were driven by car to their farm near Gettysburg PA, with some difficulty on account of the snow. I heard the story about the tire chains but until now I never knew about this photo!

7.50 series tires on the 10-millionth Plymmie, and a radio, anyway.

Just think (again); if Miss Belvie had been properly sealed up (like in a welded-up enclosure, like her Time Capsule
was), we could be looking at her OEM finishings and features, just like going back in time, to see how this 10,000,000th
car was built and finished.

BTW, the guy, up above?

He probably drank bourbon-and-branch; maybe soda, but probably Jim Beam (more refined), rather than J. Daniels.

He also probably could have afforded to buy an IMP, but may have decided that IMP's are for 'old' men, and that he wanted
something 'sporting', before he got old.

This car was probably bought off of a dealer's lot, because it does not have A/C, and his wife, and him, living in MI with its
high humidity, probably would have ordered the car with that option.

The car's color scheme (not too flashy, but not common, and definitely not conservative, either) probably compelled him to
want to buy it.

He's certainly proud of it, standing alongside it, there, and who WOULDN'T be, then or now????

Photograph taken February, 1967 near the intersection of West 17th Street and North King Street
in Santa Ana, California. Methinks that *might* be a 60 Dart hiding behind that pole ? Naturally
the only FL car in the shot is the one with the pole obscuring the view. Definitely a Mopar windshield.

"Late 50's is right in the middle of the market segment for Chrysler buyers"? Back in those days with much lower life expectancies, I would find it hard to believe that any car maker would target any model for a crowd that old? Maybe mid to late 40's?

Is it me, or does it seem that the majority of 57-58 Plymouth front bumpers are on crooked or are out of shape in some other way.....

Yes. And the fancy-pants wings only make alignment all that much more difficult (or
easier to knock out of whack). I have an old Collectible Auto or something like that with
pix of Richard Carpenter's 57 Fury and the bumpers are all crazy, with the wings pointing
every which way. I would think someone would have squared them up before a magazine
photo shoot !

Two more photos follow, the first labelled Toronto, March 1956,
and the second looks quite refreshing, compared to the 100+ degree afternoons we've been having here in Georgia!

How much lower were life expectancies in the fifties?

There were still plenty of people active and doing things in their eighties back then, so people in their fifties would have been just like me and dozens of others on this board now... we're in our sixties and don't see any form of an end in sight! We're planning nice long and happy 'twilight years' when we get to them.

I'm certain most people in their fifties in the fifties felt just the same. And they would have had more expendable income than people in their thirties or early forties.

The whole right side of the road is Forward Look . . . a Plymouth far ahead left, a Plymouth close right, Imperial spun around, another 55/56 Imp going in the right direction, and way ahead it looks like a Dodge or DeSoto wagon.

The oncoming cars are all GM!

Judging by the sign on the front, the building on the right is a Chevrolet dealer, which might explain the four (or even five) 1956 Chevys in a row.

Bolo ties were the fad all over the country in the late fifities. I lived in North Dakota, and had three or four of them.
