I was going to applaud you, Dave, for moving away from those crash photos until I realized my next one features a one-eyed '57 Plymouth!

I'm certain Neil could come up with an entire life saga of the two folks in the second photo!

*******************************************

I like the crash photos, except the photo quality was pretty bad on a lot of them. I knew a guy once
whose father was a State Trooper back inthe 40's and 50's and the kid got to ride along with Dad on
Saturdays and take pix with his Brownie. He had an enormous collection of crash pictures that were
fantastic.

Make that Olds wagon a Chev and that could be my Mom turning around to holler at me or my brother !

Those are some wonderful photos, Joakim. I really dig the Chicago Skyway sign photo!

Here are some more black and whites:
The first is Shardon Street, Boston, 1964.
The second is unknown.
The last is the 3-wheel club from Puyallup, WA, 1965.

Great pics guys. The crash photos were all scanned from one source, and were originally fairly clear, but the ones that turned out poorly did not improve whether I enlarged or shrunk them, maybe it was something to do with the original resolution?
Anyways, here is a car show.....a new car show in 1955.

This was hard to find, it is the first time I see a whole block erased and the streets with different names, the old timer swiping the floor will be in the middle of the street today.

Great then and now. If one studies then and now shots around the country, one would see how much more plant life is in the new pictures. The talk about all the cutting down of the trees is ridiculous.

Dave, you might try this...

Some time ago my scanner ceased to function, so I started experimenting with using the digital camera for anything I'd previously scanned. Once I'd got the routine worked out, it works fine. In the case of copying pics from a magazine or book, it surpasses the scanner any time.

Just put the pic on the floor, not in the sun, but in good natural light. Hold the camera above it, you will find that you'll work out how to square the pic up in the viewfinder to be directly above it. Shoot at mid-range of your camera's zoom facility (ie. not on zoom, not on wide angle, in the middle).

See how you get on re-doing some of those you've posted and had trouble with...

Judging by some of the cars in the background (including a PT Cruiser), I'd reckon that pic doesn't really qualify as 'old'...

painted ? What parts of a 58 valance were Argent ?

OMG ! Is that an Expedition in the background ? !

Yes, however, #83(?) is leading with his 'chin'....(never a smart move; ---hopefully #170 has backed into the
nose of #103----)....and is apparently aiming for Car 54 's driver's door (illegal, nowadays, in most demo-derbies).

That late-20's/early-30's car seems to be doing rather well, so far.

The Mt Vernon Lodge....

"Mount Vernon Lodge “Central Florida’s Finest” was completed in 1948. Advertisements for the lodge called it an ultra-modern hotel court which included 34 units with tile baths, steam heat and a screened in heated (84 degrees) swimming pool, offered at reasonable rates. Located at 1626 Silver Springs Boulevard, they offered free parking under the orange trees, “America’s most unique parking lot”. Owners and managers were Gene and Rosalie Cushman.

There were discussions in the early 50s, as the four-laning of Pine Street was nearing completion, that Ocklawaha Ave. be renamed to Silver Springs Boulevard. Silver Springs was important and good for Ocala Businesses and the idea for the name change was to help tourists readily find the “Springs Attraction” by way of Pine Street onto Ocklawaha Ave. (Silver Springs Blvd). There was much debating over this because some of Ocala’s long time residents didn’t agree. Many felt that hanging onto the name Ocklawaha Ave. would preserve some of Ocala’s history. Gene Cushman, owner and manager of Mount Vernon Lodge, was one business owner that fought hard for the name to change.

Over time Mount Vernon Lodge became the Mount Vernon Motel and was adjoined by Morrison’s Cafeteria located at 1600 Silver Springs Boulevard. Morrisons’ boasted “No finer food . . . . . anywhere”. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. They had triple A ratings."

Writer and confirmed atheist Ayn Rand (1905-82), in New York City circa 1957, following the publication of her Atlas Shrugged novel that year. I recognize the chrome trim outline of a '56 Dodge Coronet to the far right. Did Atlas really shrug when he saw The Forward Look?

Most of the buildings are still there. The original photographer missed a gas station in the corner that was probably there back then.

They probably use a special lens for the camera; the hills in the back are further than that they appear.

I notice a Simca Aronde in the Garden State pic...

Were they commonplace?

Ray, you are funny. If there is ever a toady little import car in a shot, you're all over it !

Simcas never sold that well in the NW part of the States. More in the larger cities, but they were
quite an oddity on the roads by the early 70's .... not terribly long after they were new. I remember
seeing them occasionally in the wrecking yards along with other oddball foreign makes like Vauxhall,
Austin, Fiat, Opel, Toyopet, Saab, ..... I am sure there were others from those pre-Japanese invasion
days. I am forgetting the name of the French car that looked like it had a moustache over the rear
bumper ... oh yeah, Dauphine ! A girl I went to school with drove a little british convertible when we
got to that age of driving. Her family had a fleet of them restored or in the process thereof. But that
was really unusual. Most foreign car buffs went for the sports cars like MG's and Triumphs.

Doc, I also noticed a TR in an slightly earlier pic...

Just trying to keep you blokes on your toes. And the Pommie convertibles were undoubtedly Morris Minors, right?

******************************************

TR's were common, as were MG's. You lost me on "Pommies" ... explain ?

I did a little internet search to jog my memory of the car name that girl at school drove ....
.... it was a Hillman.

Sorry, brain fade.

Doc, 'Pommie' is Australian for 'English'... there are many theories about how the term originated, I don't know which is correct...

Yes, Hillman did do some convertibles. I actually had one at one stage, a '49 model. Hillman was to become a Chrysler product later, of course, after the Simca acquisition when Chrysler bought out the Rootes Group. Singer, Hillman, Humber, Sunbeam.

That's how it came to be that Australian Valiants were exported to England... to fill the market gap when the big Humbers were discontinued.

Wow! Did you take that photo, Marc?
It's not a vintage photo at all, well unless June 15, 2007 is vintage!

That's my former car (custom SilverSpecial) parked in the misty rain that wonderful morning in Tulsa. My brother and I had just driven in from Macon, Georgia, and I was a little disappointed to park next to an old Ferd.
Thanks for the photo, I had forgotten how damp it was that day.

Well, back to the old photos!
Pete
