Doctor DeSoto - 2011-07-16 3:15 PM

Is that your car there doc? The ragtop in the upper left side.

********************************************************

Are you referring to the Shoppers World photo ? I see a white 59 Plymouth ragtop and what
*could be* a sort of goldish-looking DeSoto, but my eyes aren't good enough to give a positive
ID. Or are you looking at something else ?

Shoppers World. Wow ! I remember those cheesy mega-stores. Is the one called something
like "Jaybirds" still open between Chehalis and Centralia along the old highway ?

Note the 57 Chrysler in the foreground with the rarely seen hood ornament pair.

The white one is a Sport Fury convertible.
2 cars left from the DeSoto is a 59 Plymouth 4 door sedan

The hard-to-make-out DeSoto is probably a 57, with the sweep lower on the sides and hidden
by the 61 Ford to its left. If it were a 58, the sweep would be visible on the upper rear fin. But
I think you are right, it is a DeSoto. Given the color, it might be an Adventurer, clearly indicating
the need for a fast car to get to the great deals there at Shoppers World !

Deaconess Hospital still stands, but DAMM, you'd hardly recognize it for all the building gone
up around it. It looks like it stands out on a cow pasture in that shot ! Today, the elevated I-90
passes right behind the rear building, and the city has crowded up all around on all the other
sides. Something deceiving here is how flat the ground looks. This is actually on a pretty steep
hill, sloping downward toward the background.

Surprisingly, the facade still looks much the same. A Harry Rectangle masterpiece of architectural design.

Yeah, it's in Spokane ... I think on 5th ? The north-south street to the west is Lincoln ?
It is one of the steepest streets in town ... a real thrill in the winter when there's snow
and ice. You drop down about five blocks to the light at 3rd, which is almost always red.
A thrill worth avoiding !

Now here is a place we drove by a lot when I was a kid. Every Sunday we went to visit my grandfather, who worked for the B&M railroad, and drove to Greenfield, MA. This spot is on RT 2 known as the Mohawk Trail, which we frequented in the summer months.

Old terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, Atlanta GA, circa 1964. This building was completed in 1961 and imploded in 1981, in favor of the current terminal. The Atlanta airport people do such a good job of removing all traces of their old airport buildings. Couldn't find any sign of this terminal anywhere.

5th is something of a "side street". Most traffic goes on down Lincoln to 3rd or 2nd to go east or
west. As such, I saw this postcard before I ever drove 5th and saw the building, but went looking
for it once I had seen it and was surprised to see it pretty much as it was built !

Now how is this for "small world" ...... that red van belongs to a floor covering contractor I have
used on many of my jobs !

No FLs, but this is the city I live in, and this intersection has not changed much. The bank on the corner is now a jewelery store, the Calvin Theater has been restored and the Hotel Nothampton has been around for a long time.

The mountain is still there!

Even for a little post card, the (professional) photographers back then would use a 4X5 inch large format camera. The color printer (Um, a craftsman, not a desktop device) needed a big piece of film to start with. Also, by manipulating the lens, they could get all the buildings to stand up straight, and get everything near and far in focus. They also used mostly "normal lenses" which give the same angle of view as a 45-50mm on a 35mm camera.

The Google "street view" cams use a wider angle lens that gives a "buggy" feel, with closer buildings bigger, and the far away objects very small. Never mind the fact that the webcam pics are taken crudely without any human thought for lighting, weather, composition, timing . . . so these poor downtowns, with the life already stripped out of them, look even worse when photographed from a robo-camera on top of a moving car.

I went through the archives at the Bartow Times newspaper, and apparently the County sold that mountain
for use as a movie prop in 1972 and it was hauled to California for use there.

Charlotte Auto Fair, in the car corral section at the speedway. The white '63 Imp is the closest thing to an actual FL car I could find on the Auto Fair's web site.
