Bank still there with a different name; the left side is complete gone. whatever happened to main street america? wth there was a time you could instantly recognize THIS IS AMERICA neons, googie road signs, motels telefone/power poles magnificent cars etc now it looks like europe, asia or elsewhere. this thread is becoming more and more depressing. i just cant believe how americans have changed and apparently did not appreciate their unique heritage.

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Sid, 50 years from now people will be lamenting the passage of what is now being created in the name of "efficient contemporary business vernacular" architecture, as seen in that faux Gorgian Revival bank-type frontage in the DIGITAL-IMAGE (remember photographs?) me.jpg, above here. What continues to impress me is how the large vehicles-of-the-day were able to be parallel parked so closely to each other; the "Ashville NC" photo, above here, is merely typical of the closeness of this type of parking. People thought nothing about entombing the other parked cars, adjacent to their own car. Edited by d500neil 2011-08-11 5:24 PM

Location: Parts Unknown | Wow, .... dig that bomb shelter / bunker looking bedroom set above ! Here's a pic of Coos Bay, O. I can't make out any Mopars, but it is a cool street scene anyway. To keep in FL related, Back about 1987 I drove my 61 NY'er down through there on a goose chase looking for a 57 NY'er convertible, which I actually found ! It was not for sale, but it was exciting to see it and talk fins with the owner. (coos bay.jpg) Attachments ---------------- coos bay.jpg (75KB - 223 downloads)

A 57 Savoy looks like all we have for FL cars in this shot. Although not identified, this looks like Holly Street with the camera pointed south to me. Location: Parts Unknown | Probably pre-dating the Forward Look by a few years, La Conner was a haunt of mine as a kid and looked pretty much like this when I was there. Today it is one of those uptown ginchy tourista hot spots where "artists" sell their wares to the cookie-cutter bunch at four figures a pop. Way back when, it was a little fishing village where crusty old mariners seemed to enjoy talking to us bubbly kids about all things old. Location: Parts Unknown | Way off the mark for the Forward Look era, this is the context I best like my Forward Look cars .... the sleepy backwater towns that still looked like 1910 in 1965. This is where my best memories of old cars and the people who drove them occurred. Hunting and camping trips into the hills found many of these places, only the cars were a little newer, but the ambiance remained. This is Florence, O. on the old coast road about halfway between between Washington and California. (229086942.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 229086942.jpg (50KB - 210 downloads)

BTW, that wonderful PC, above here, probably was a set-up photo; all three cars are 59's, with a CRL vert, a Caddie, and a Booick (each properly keeping to 'their' own side of the street) being featured on it, and all are parked in the distance, so that the motel is clearly seen; no riff-raff parked there.

Elite Veteran Posts: 802 Location: Norcross (Atlanta area), GA | Actress Janet Leigh (1927-2004), in a scene from her most famous movie, the Alfred Hitch****-directed Psycho (1960). This is not her most famous scene in the film, but there she is in a movie studio car mock-up with the traffic behind her. I would say that the person driving that '59 is definitely not Norman Bates. He was never into The Forward Look anyway. (janetleigh.jpg) Attachments ---------------- janetleigh.jpg (10KB - 197 downloads)

One hopes that there isn't such a thing! I drove one once, but only because this gorgeous girl I was out with asked me to drive her grandmother's car. It was one with the Ferlec electric clutch that was actuated by you touching the gearlever. What a nightmare! My only reason for spotting these things is that I'm so surprised they are so prevalent in these US photos of the time. Of course, I am allowed to spot the odd Aronde, aren't I? After all, they were sold with the 'Forward Look' logos if not the big fins.

Expert Posts: 2308 Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | ...I drove one once, but only because this gorgeous girl I was out with asked me to drive her grandmother's car. It was one with the Ferlec electric clutch that was actuated by you touching the gearlever. What a nightmare! ... I never drove a Renault Dauphine but I did drive a VW Type 1 once with one of those electric clutches in it that sounds very like the same feature and what a joy that was. I was a partsman at the VW dealership in Appleton, WI and my boss sent me to go fetch a small part that was needed for a job in the shop. The part was located at the VW dealership in Green Bay and I was given one of the late model used cars to use as a parts runner, a 1970 or 71 Type 1 "Beetle" It was said to be a good runner so I set off on my errand. That car behaved like no other car I had driven up to that time. It would buck and balk and I couldn't even get it up to speed. I was so worried that I wasn't going to make it back to the shop let alone to the shop in Green Bay that I called back and advised my boss of the trouble I was having. He asked me if I had been resting my hand on the shift knob when driving and I said in all innocence that I had been. My boss let out a string of oaths and then he said that's your trouble. You have to keep your hand off the shift lever unless you're actually going to move it as there's an electric contact in the lever that works the electric clutch. OOoops.
