I remember seeing plenty of Dauphines on the road as a kid. Always thought the rear vent louvres
looked like a frown or a moustache. When were Dauphines in production ? My earliest memories of
car dealerships is from 1963, and I cannot remember ever seeing a non-U.S. mfr. dealer besides VW
in those early years. My Grandfather would rant about #@! people buying those .... "Selling America
short".

In the late 60's I remember Austin Marinas and Saabs and Volvos and even though MG's and Triumphs
were all over the roads, I don't have any recollection of seeing them for sale.

From what I've read (many years ago), the Dauphine's presence in the US, more than the VW presence, in '57 and '58 convinced the US makers to start building 'compacts'. Dauphines were the biggest selling import in the US at the time.

They were built from about '55 to about '62, though it might have been later for domestic (French and African colonies) consumption. The much-improved R8 then came out and the utilitarian R4 really took over the economy end of Renault's production.

The Fregate never made much impact, fortunately...

From Wikipedia :

A 1958 Time article said: "The car that has come up fastest in the US market in the past year is Renault's Dauphine. A snub-nosed 32-hp Sedan, it is low-priced, economical and small enough to shoehorn into a small parking space." The same article said "The Dauphine is already outselling Volkswagen in eleven U.S. states, including Texas. So brisk is demand that Renault and the French Line have formed a new shipping company CAT (Compagnie d'Affrètement et de Transport) with six freighters that ferry up to 1,060 Dauphines each across the Atlantic. To serve the U.S. buyer, Renault in just 18 months has also built a nationwide network of 16 U.S. distributors and 410 dealers."

After initial success in the U.S. market, the Dauphine began to suffer. An internal agent, Bernard Hanon (who would later become chairman of Renault),conducted a thorough market study that signaled trouble — sending his report to the director of Renault Inc. in New York. The director filed the report without acting on it — the report was found years later by envoys from corporate headquarters in Billancourt. The damage had already been done; thousands of unordered Dauphines sat at ports worldwide, decaying. The damage to Renault was immense; and Régie Renault faced the first serious crisis in its history.

By October 1960, a slump hit imported cars in the US, and Time said "In August the U.S. imported 50% fewer French cars than in July, and for the first six months of the year imports ran 33% below the rate for the same period in 1959. Two ships loaded with Renault Dauphines were turned back in mid-Atlantic because the docks in New York were already overcrowded with unsold Dauphines."

In the U.S., Renault sold 28,000 Dauphines in 1957, 57,000 in 1958 and 102,000 in 1959 — falling to 12,106 by 1966.

See, you could have had a water-cooled Corvair...

1966? Is that a world-wide figure or for the US? I can't believe they were selling Dauphines in any decent market once the R8 hit, and it was out by '64 at the latest. Hang on, I'll check the book... or the books...

The R8 was on sale in Australia no later than early 1963, it should have put paid to any Dauphine interests outside of France or its colonies. The Baldwin/Georgano/Sedgwick/Laban history book puts the commencement of the Dauphine at '56 with a million built by 1960, 200,000 'crossed the Atlantic' in the first four years. So that must have included some to Canada... or maybe Mexico... to fit in with the numbers above.

A sideline, an intrusion into the thread, but I think all kinds of perspective helps.

A neighbor of mine bought a Renault in 1967 or 68 - I think it was an R10 model. It was unusually small for the day but he seemed to like it for commuting to his job. I don't know if he would have been brave enough to take a long trip in it, but the R10 was supposed to be a better car than the Dauphine ever was.

The Gordini was a separate model...

Like a Shelby Mustang was to a Mustang. It had a 4-speed gearbox, from memory, the head and carburetion differed, it probably had a different bore and/or stroke and other improvements.

In France, the R10 was considered to be a "ladies' car" compared to the R8, but they were little different. And owners of them here didn't baulk at driving them on long trips. In fact, this is something that really makes me wonder about people, that they would ever with any relatively modern car not expect it to make a 2000 or 3000km round trip without bothers. After all, most people regularly drive 5000 miles or so between services without looking at the car, and in city use that would be much harder on the car than a nice trip.

Gentlemen, I give you the Smart Car. I've seen these on the Interstate highway rolling as fast as their little wheels would let them.  Sure they could probably make a day's trip of 500 miles easy and not even break a sweat. But what about the driver? Traveling long distances in a micro-car like the Smart Car would be only fun for the young and supple. If you're old and beat up like me, you want the cushiony boulevard ride that only a U.S. Land Yacht can provide. Just my two cents worth though. And don't forget about the HGV vehicles on the road (Semi tractor trailer trucks) I doubt the driver of one of those things would even feel the bump if he ran over a Smart Car.

Not even theses small towns look the same. Bank still there with a different name; the left side is complete gone.

whatever happened to main street america? wth there was a time you could instantly recognize THIS IS AMERICA neons, googie road signs, motels telefone/power poles magnificent cars etc now it looks like europe, asia or elsewhere. this thread is becoming more and more depressing. i just cant believe how americans have changed and apparently did not appreciate their unique heritage.

Come to California some time,it looks like Mexico now. I agree with you completely,it's disgusting we let this happen.
Apparently our heritage and culture are disposable and don't matter, what's important is accommodating people who come here illegally and don't give a rats ass about America and adapting to our culture.
I feel sorry for greatest generation who fought so hard to improve our way of life only to have it wind up like this.
Sadly we only have ourselves to blame. increasingly permissive attitudes and a constant lowering of standards have brought us to the point we are at now.
Its only going to get worse.

Yeah, tell me about it! I wish he would have held on to them all. He would trade in one every year for the new year model. His '65 Fury convertible was particularly interesting. It came with a dash plaque and certificate saying that it had been used in President Johnson's inaugural parade. The dealer told my uncle that Chrysler had supplied most of the convertibles for the January 1965 inauguration and they were been sold at dealerships as "demonstrators". I would love to have just one of his drop tops!

There are several Dauphine and Renault Forums, but the best one is in French, easily translated by Google.
Call me crazy, but this '61 is in the parts-acquisition mode, having owned it for about 20 years.
I just brought it home to slowly start working on it. We had one in about 1963, and my Dad
really liked it, but we didn't keep it very long.

Yes, it opens...

Just like a VW it has the 'trunk', 'boot' or 'luggage compartment' under the front, as well as the fuel tank if I recall correctly.

Funnily enough, today I finished up on a property where there was no fewer than six or seven Renault 8s and 10s.

Please no more about Dauphines!,my dad told me he had one when it was just about new (push button automatic) and said it was awful and about the worst car he owned, the other being a 1959 Vauxhall Victor at 3 years old that had the rear springs supported by tin cans as the rust out was so bad.

Doctor DeSoto - 2011-09-07 9:57 AM

Looks to be a 56 Adventurer !

Nice shot of the Mt. Kansas ski area too.

Doesn't that '56 DeSoto have a pillar,so it looks to me like a 4 Door sedan painted in Adventurer colours
