Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | And, here's Horace, paying his respects to The Queen, in Long Beach, CA, upon his arrival in CA, in June 1981, to begin his retirement activities, after having survived his service life, in northern Indiana. He had just been transported from Toledo, where Jeeps are built, to the CA Jeep receiving depot, in a new-Jeep car carrier, thanks to my Dad's having some 'in's' with the factory reps, back then. Cost $800.00, in 1981-dollars, to get him across country. Some tourists were obviously impressed seeing him, there. Not sure what it is,was thinking '60 Dart or '59 Plymouth, but maybe a prototype?. This is surely a very interesting photo?!? The rear fin has the very same profile as the unique Crown Imperial convertible built by Ghia in 1959! The car was built for Achmad Sukarno, self-elected president of Indonesia as a 4 door convertible with the gunsight tail lights that was designed for the 56 Imperials. Here, it seems to be a 4DHT under construction, but does the sturdy rig indicate that they're converting it into a 4 door convertible?? Notes - the media boxes hanging from above are still in use in Italian factories today - there's another car in a workstation behind the "Imperial", it looks Europeean to me. - there's more workstations around - the guys looks Italian to me - the roll of PRESTIK is marketed in South Afrika http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prestik Edited by wizard 2011-09-19 3:22 PM

The Pilot House truck cabs ran through until 1961 here, then they were replaced with a cab that was 'borrowed' from International Harvester. It had a few changes, but they were clearly the same cab. Probably late in '59 a new flat front was put onto the Pilot House cabs with a heavy square patterned grille and dual headlights. In this pic I wouldn't be surprised if the cars behind the truck cab were Chrysler Royals, but I didn't realise we had pillarless 4-doors in the Dodge Custom Royals assembled here.

Most police cars were sold as fleet sales. Maybe I am missing something ? Love the 60 Dodge with the 56 vintage 15" wheels on it !!!! I parted an almost exact same WSP car to this one back in the 80's. Wish I had just stashed it somewhere now !

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | LOL...in the "Santa Barbara" photo, Mr. Spectator is perched on a 6' step ladder, that is being supported by two 2x6"(?) boards that are resting/laid across the bed of the Chubbie pick-m-up! If he were to lose his balance, he'd either fall off of the side of the truck, and/or further into the truck's bed. BTW, those are 1956 Dodge 15" dog-dishes on that MO-cruiser. The 56-doggies were continuously used up until Dodge once again featured OEM 15" wheels on their cars, which occurred sometime in the 60's. Edited by d500neil 2011-09-20 4:41 PM

Veteran Posts: 102 Location: CA | Looks to be a Plaza or non-specified model "fleet" car to my eyes. Most police cars were sold as fleet sales. Maybe I am missing something? All the information I gathered for each of those pics are as follows: 1958 Plymouth Savoy Pursuit: For this year only, the Pursuit Special, based on the Savoy model, was equipped with a 295 horsepower 350 CID "Golden Commando" wedge V-8. The 280 ft-lb of torque were relayed to the 3.31:1 rear axle through a 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. 1959 Plymouth Savoy Pursuit: The Highway Patrol also used Plymouths in 1959. Based again on the Savoy model, the 1959 Plymouth Pursuit Special used the “Golden Commando” 361 CID V8, coupled to a pushbutton operated TorqueFlite automatic transmission and 3.31 rear end. They used 7.10 x 15 tires. The new engine was rated at 305 hp and 395 lb-ft torque. They were exceptional handling cars for their day and had super acceleration- would top out at approximately 120 mph. This unit took a short sabbatical after being knocked around a little bit by a car driven by a drunk driver. After a little R & R (Remove & Replace), it was back to work and feeling better than ever. The Trooper was uninjured thanks to his safety belt. 1960 Dodge Dart Seneca: The Highway Patrol used several makes of cars again in 1960. This Dodge Dart Seneca was probably the rarest of them all. Its chassis and driveline were identical to the 1960 Plymouth. It rode on a 118” wheelbase, was powered by the 305 hp 361 CID V-8, and used the TorqueFlite automatic transmission to send power to the 3.31:1 rear axle. One change that made a Minnesota Highway Patrol car stand out from the crowd was the addition of white doors to the maroon paint scheme. Beginning in 1960, the doors were painted white and a new one-piece decal included a maroon background with gold lettering. The unit number, previously displayed on the doors, was relocated to the rear of the car. 1960 Plymouth Savoy Pursuit: The 1960 Plymouth Pursuit Special was again equipped with the 361 CID V8 and automatic transmission. Plymouth advertised the Minnesota Highway Patrol as one of several major agencies using their cars this year. Any inconsistencies you can blame on the website where I got these pics and info.. lol..

Location: Parts Unknown | Not looking to blame. Heck no. Looking to learn something ! This 58 Plymouth Pursuit car is identical to mine (except I have 2 extra doors) in appearance .... same plain flat fender ornaments, same straight bar side trim coming forward on that body crease from the rear bumper. I guess what I'm angling at is that the Plaza could be had with either this straight bar side trim or none at all. Same for the fender ornaments. What I am not clear about is that perhaps the Savoy could be had on the "low end" with the Plaza straight bar side trim ???? ..... or the low-mounted color insert trim that most Savoys are seen with. All focus on 58 Plymouths seems to be on the Furys and Christines and no one knows a dammed thing about the el cheapo models. So, this is a "study in progress" on my part. ****************************************************************** About that 60 Dodge .... The one I parted was a 383, 4bbl, 3-onda-tree car with a 3.23 posi rear. It was a 2s Washington State Patrol pursuit, still in original dark blue metallic paint. If memory serves, it had no model designation tags. I deeply regret not socking that car away somewhere to be restored now when we have all gained a greater appreciation for how cool strippers and cop cars are.
