Expert Posts: 2308 Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | Nice 1960 Dodge Polara but was there anything special about this car? It looks like Harry Truman is getting the keys for the car from someone else (a salesman?) The Truman Presidential Library has two Chryslers that belonged to the Trumans, but they're both 1941 models - a 1941 Chrysler Royal Club Coupe and a 1941 Chrysler Windsor Sedan. He may have owned later model cars but I wouldn't know where to look for that kind of information. Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | It was reportedly a Super D500 with 4.86 Sure Grip...see how happy the salesman is...Harry is about to find out that it's not the 170 Bent-6 that he thought that he was Special-Ordering. This car is also, reportedly, the same one that P. Garlick discovered, in Mexico, recently, after Harry had had it be deported, after Sweden declined to accept it, because 'they' feared that the car was too powerful and would probably alter the earth's rotation, at such a high-latitude. Yeah; it's THAT car. Edited by d500neil 2012-01-24 1:30 AM

Extreme Veteran Posts: 466 Location: Southwest VA | Floyd Clymer (October 26, 1895 – January 22, 1970), was a motorcycle pioneer, racer, dealer and distributor, a magazine publisher, a racing promoter, an author, and a motorcycle manufacturer. He was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998. In 1960 Clymer was conducting a cross-country test of a new Ford Falcon for his magazine, Auto Topics. When he stopped at Independance, MO Clymer ran into his friend, former President Truman. This photo is Clymer speaking with Truman standing beside his new car, a 1960 Dodge Polara 4-door hardtop.

Note the gyroscopic wheels and the emergency ejector seat; think that the salesman is explaining the function of the flux capacitor, in the photo. And, you can see the Radar Range detector on top of the rear flite deck, too. Edited by d500neil 2012-01-24 1:38 AM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Neil, would you hazard a guess as to the color scheme, interior and exterior of Truman's Polara? My bet is a conservative tan, light green, or light blue metallic, with a matched interior .

Missouri might have had a similar situation as North Dakota did many years ago. The taxing entity allowed a certain amount for each patrol car and the officer could buy whatever they wanted, but they had to make up the difference. The brother of a good friend was in the ND Highway Patrol and he always bought Buicks. Our county sheriff always drove a Chrysler New Yorker, and our city police chief bought a '58 Edsel...that he quickly traded for a '59 Ford.
