I'm surprised nobody commented on the odd Plymouth wagon ambulance. It doesn't have the backward slanted station wagon fins.

It's a 1-way street; makes sense that station KOY would have its signage facing the on-coming traffic.

Yes, still standing and still looks pretty much the same, except now it's a retirement home. It's not on Google streetview, unfortunately..

Ray; ---nah, just standard vintage photo-transparency sandwich'ing and retouching, as performed by an advertising
agency.

This car may well not have been painted red, even.

Virtually every color advertising illustration from the 50's-60's has been sandwiched and/or retouched, to fit the theme
or the background of the image.

This is, just, a really good example of the advertising craft; that woman was almost certainly separately added to the
photo-image.

OR it could have been a WPC Club Winter Photo Meet Entry, Neil, if you remember from your WPC days! It's not a 1959 photo given the fact that the whitewalls are too narrow. Perhaps the car had been just driven straight out of the "out of our view" garage for the photo, but given the evidence of no snow on the tire treads, that's unlikely.

Ian -

Do you know for sure that this was a WPC Photo Meet entry ?

This looks like it was removed from a calendar. I'm thinking that this is the real deal: the car is really there. It's a professional photo, judging by the composition and color-coordination of the model's outfit. It's not a sandwich, as Neil suggests, because it's too difficult to get the lighting just right between the background and the car. It's also probably an older photo, so no photoshopping here. Although it's tough to tell, since this is a photo of a photo.

Agree with what Ian wrote. No snow on the tires ? The ground looks frozen, so it's easy to drive the car a few feet from the out-of-sight garage or tent without picking up any snow.

>Virtually every color advertising illustration from the 50's-60's has been sandwiched and/or retouched.
Retouched: probably. Sandwiched: Not likely. Too costly and time-consuming. What's your source on this, Neil ?

For a good book on automobile photography of the 50s and 60s, read Boulevard Photographic: The Art of Automotive Advertising. It's available on Amazon.

Interesting discussion, here---this is a MAJOR professional rendition, here...where to begin?

First, it is (professional) 8 x10" size, and taken with at least, If it is a real photo, (which I highly doubt) a medium format
camera; too much detail on the car for mere 35mm format.

The car has had a SHADOW added underneath it, to accentuate its appearance; c'mon; where's the sun?

The entire background is a nice shade of uniformly inconspicuous blue-gray.

The CAR is Fire Engine IMP red (professionally-spotlessly/brilliant) as are highlights on the girl's clothing, and, there's no
sun or shadows lying across the woman's face, or, even on the car.

The car's paint has obviously (even crudely) been detail enhanced; check out the heavy air-brushing across its upper
flanks.

The tires (and car) have absolutely no evidence of any snow on them, or on the wheelhouses, and, there are no tire tracks (or footprints)
anywhere around the car.

The windows are all lowered, in the dead of winter.

Does anyone recognize the car's license plate? It appears to be a "dealership" (maybe, even, factory) type/format.

The one Chevy-in-the-woodshed aspect are those narrow whitewall tires on the car.

This is an outstanding illustration, though; the car just POPS out from its background---but, this SURE ain't no real world
"snapshot".

Medium format camera: OK, possibly.
Shadow underneath: Car is illuminated by skylight, probably mid-morning. Cloudy day.
No sun: Yup, a cloudy day. We have plenty of those back east and in the mid-west. No professional photographer would ever shoot a snow photo such as this on a sunny day.
Paint enhanced ?: Maybe slightly retouched. Reflections you see in body are from large, white reflector cards.
No snow on tires: See my answer above. However, this may be an area that was retouched.
Windows lowered: Yes, they are.
Snapshot ?: Definitely not. This was done by a professional that had all the right equipment to pull off a photo like this.

Thanks, Ron (who is an accomplished photographer, for those who don't know that).

One pro-trick to photographing a car (on a semi-sunny day; bright sunshine leaves shadows and washes-out the car's paint)
is to take a spray bottle and to wash-down the car's tire treads, to remove dirt from them---not just the sidewalls, the
TREADS.

This car, of course, has treads that appear to be exactly the same appearance as its sidewalls; you can't even SEE the treads
on the tires.

Note the small piece of snow that is lying immediately in front of the right front tire.

That piece of snow should have been flattened when the car was backed into its position, for the photo, and, then, at least, there
should be SOME measure of snow lying somewhere on/around the car's tires, if that snow hadn't been air-brushed OFF of the
(tread-less) tires.

Is it ?

I thought only 2 of the Matador 2s cars went to the California Highway Patrol (?).

This car has a Dart nose and *I think* the fin looks to be Dart as well. But not being
a hardcore 60 Dodge nut, I could be wrong. Were the 60 Matadors in question built with
the short Dart nose like the 61 Polaras sold to CHP the following year were ?

The Nebraska car is a Dart Seneca, not a Matador. The fin is far too small for a Matador or Polara.

No such thing as a "short nose" Dart. The front clip on the Dart is the same as used on the Matador and Polara. Only the grille insert and other trim pieces differ. The non-wagon Dart models were on a 118" wheelbase while the big Dodges were on a 122" wheelbase. The extra length was added in the rear seat area by moving the rear axle back 4".

The same held for 1961 - the front clip was the same for all Darts & Polaras, the Polara adding a cross onto the grille. The extra 4" for the Polara was done by shoving the rear axle back. And adding the additional length in the rear gave the stylists the goahead for different rear quarter panels for the Dart anf Polara. The DeSoto and Chrysler used the same floor pan and cowl as the Polara, with New Yorker and 1960 Saratoga using a 4" longer nose.

The 1957-59 models used the same method of extending wheelbases. The basic wagon body was on a 122" wheelbase, and the above explains why Plymouth and Dart, using only one front clip each, had non-wagons on a 118" wheelbase and wagons on a 122" wheelbase. And why 126" non-wagon models also had 126" wheelbase wagons.

Chrysler's first use of extending floor pans and hoods was with the 1934 Airflow, followed by the non-Airflow models in 1935-6.

The 1961 Michigan car is a Dart Seneca 2 door sedan, not a LWB Polara. Note the low fins and no tube taillights. As stated in my previous post, the extra length on the Polara was added in the rear seat area, resulting in different rear quarter panels. The front clip on the Polara was shared with the Dart.

No Polara 2 door sedans were built in 1961. All 2 door sedans were Dart Seneca or Dart Pioneer. Only two Matador 2 doot sedans were built in 1960, and they were the last 2 door sedans built on the large Dodge (C) body, ever.
