Notice that parade "Canada 1958" 5 pics above, there is a 58 Mayfair 2 door HT right behind a Custom Royal 2 door HT, and a 58 wagon behind the Mayfair.

The Waddles Place is now the only Hooters left in town. Its right next to I-5 and the Columbia River just cross from Vancouver,Wa.

When I was a kid, I-5 had yet to be built, and what are now the northbound lanes were
the four lane US 99. Waddles sat right there looking pretty much like it does in this photo.
Somewhere in the same area was the diving woman in the bathing suit, advertising Jantzen
Beach. Both lasted into the 80's. I remember seeing them when in Po'land for the swap
meet.

Did you ever get to go inside "Waddles" or see it lit up at night? That duck with the neon "rays" behind it sure is cool looking!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Affirmative on both. I am drawing a blank on whether or not I liked the food. Must
not have been too impressive. By the time I noticed both the Jantzen girl and Waddles,
the traffic through that tight spot was a clusterfxck. The on-off "ramps" to get there were
deathtraps, with 20' to get up to highway speed in ALWAYS heavy traffic. The growth of that
corridor doomed Waddles as it was originally built ... just too close in to the major traffic
that made someone build it there in the first place !

Bernie,

Do you have a street name to go with those Seattle shots ? One looks like it *might*
have the VA hospital in the background, but I can't be sure. I am left wondering why
the house is being moved. Is it related to the sewer line going in ?

Just curious, but what did Waddles look like inside? Did they have more of those duckling logos on the walls, was there a jukebox, was there a waitress named Flo who told you to "kiss her grits"? I wish we still had neat diners like that around today! Sure beats the hell out of seeing McDonalds and Jack in the box buildings....sigh....one time machine please.

Edit-By the way "Waddles" was named after its founder Gene Waddle.this restaurant was designed by Pietro Bellushi and opened in 1945.

Doc,

The Seattle municipal archives website, where the sewer costruction pix came from, lists SW Spokane Street and Fauntleroy Freeway as locations in the files in the pictures. Some of these photos made it to the Flickr photo-sharing website, such as the '57 picture I posted with the '56 Coronet on the muddy residential street. I have gotten requests from other vintage brand fans about a picture taken in the Seattle waterfront area during 1960, but I did not post it here due to no FL cars being in it.

Hey Doc, those ramps from Jantzen Beach onto I-5 are still a major pain. My wife and I visit the Steakburger just up in Hazel Dell. They just had their 50th anniversary. The put-put is still going strong and they still light up the trees at Christmas. We support what they do there and the burgers are GREAT!!!!! It doesn't get any better!!!

Notice anything interesting about that 61 Cruiser?

Cobo Hall photos are easy to identify, from the unique ceiling lighting fixtures.

There are no Forward Looks in this photo, but the building is really wild and there are two 1959 Buicks so I figured others may still enjoy it anyway.

Another Seattle picture for Doctor DeSoto! This one was taken in September 1961 on Olive Way near the downtown business district. Starting construction for the I-5 freeway?

That parking spot right at the neon Stardust sign must have been reserved for 1957 Dodge only ...

This picture is estrange, Miss Lois Conway outfit seems out of a 1967 car show not 57, you can clearly see her under hood in that shot. I honestly thought that people were more conservative back then.

Careful posting that kind of photos up here, some old gentlemen might get a hernia from them. That said, no camel toe there

[Heavy sigh] Denis, you are either a bachelor and/or didn't grow up with any bathing-beauty females in your household.

What you are up-skirting, there, is nothing more than the bottom of the 1-piece bathing suit, altho Lois is playing to
the camera in that photograph.

Bernie, I would hope that the I-Five in Seattle doesn't have corners like that in it!

The Pasadena (Arroya Seco) Freeway in L.A. has 1940-ish bends/curves in it, but nothing as tight as depicted in
your photograph.

"Apron" style, eh?

Them are some real-life surfboards, there (those things standing proud behind the girls).

Neil. Just saying that seems a very tight outfit for the time and kind of event. My oldest aunt, at 73 told me NO WAY she would wear that back then.

Those form hugging swimsuits were very common back then, not only on the beach, but in beauty contests and modeling events....and there were two piece "bikini" swimsuits in the 1950's as well!
