Location: Parts Unknown | d500neil - 2012-03-20 1:23 PM Bernie, I would hope that the I-Five in Seattle doesn't have corners like that in it! The Pasadena (Arroya Seco) Freeway in L.A. has 1940-ish bends/curves in it, but nothing as tight as depicted in your photograph. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Been away too long now to easily visualize what is going on here, but I *think* the street you see will end up being an overpass and the "cut" you see in the right background is where I-5 will be run under this and many other street going from downtown and up onto Capital Hill. I suspect the subject of this photo is the gent showing how the freeway construction is causing the street to slip down the hill.

Location: Parts Unknown | Boy, do I remember Pike Place ! My mom dragged us kids along down there about every three weeks for ten years. Today it is pretty clean and upscale, but back before 1990 (?) it was a cool old run down market full of truck farmers, hippy bead sellers, and junk / antique dealers. Many good times had at the old Pike Place !

Location: Parts Unknown | mrtester - 2012-03-23 11:06 PM Floating bridge on Lake Washington, near Seattle, 1959 %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Built in 1940 to create a direct eastbound "escape route" from the city, you are looking west at the Mount Baker District (note the Mount Baker tunnel portals). Never did understand the "bulge" at the center of the bridge, but in classic human nature, even though this new route shaved off 40 miles by NOT going around Lake Washington, people had a hard time not wanting to roar across the bridge and pile their cars up in these curves. They were pretty severe at any speed over 50 and many cars ended up in the drink. The City and State had unsuccessfully lobbied for decades to build a new bridge here and in a "mysterious" happening, a large chunk of it sunk when "someone" left a hatch open during a storm, and Seattle finally got it's new bridge funding rammed down the taxpayer's throats via a "special (I could puke) Blue Ribbon Committee" established by then Governor Booth Gardner. They did a THOROUGH investigation and determined it was all a minor oversight of leaving the hatch open and advised to go ahead with the plan for the new bridge, nevermind the eleventy-billion-skillion cost. It was a cool old structure with a decided Art Deco styling influence. The Mount Baker Tunnel portals remain, and the new tunnel also mimics this style.

Even a few tri-fiver bowtie boys have never heard of its existence. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Kinda like having to explain to the "thirty-something" police officer that cars built before 1968 were not required to have seat belts. While I would not diss a Nomad, the Safari is just that much cooler because it draws that deer-in- the-headlights response. Same reason I love DeSoto. DeSoto ? .... what's THAT ?

In AFG we see Pashto in the south and more Dari in the north. The Pakistanis have their own language (more than one) and India sports some 200+ tongues ! Here is a sign off one of our checkpoints. There is a badge on the rear fin that I can't make out. Is there an easy way to spot the La Femme? Were they available as a three tone? - four doors? Curious minds want to know.
