Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | That was the conceptual problem with DeSotos....they were always at the "threshold" of luxury: almost-but-not-quite- there. Too bad they couldn't have marketed themselves as the Bentley to Chrysler's R.Royce---(oh, yeah; that was the Imperial). DeSoto: the odd man out. Edited by d500neil 2012-07-04 10:02 PM

Extreme Veteran Posts: 528 Location: Medford Oregon | Do you want to own one of the motels posted in this thread? Back in 2009 on this thread there's a picture of the Trade Winds with a 55 Chrysler Blue Heron (reposted below). I think I found the place at 3616 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA, 70001. If I am correct, it is for sale but.... In March 2010 the place was seized and the owners arrested on prostitution and tax charges. http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2010/03/metairie_motel_seized_b... It is now for sale (price reduced!) for only $430,000. "Parish might re-issue motel permit ..." http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/17129107/3616-Airline-Drive-Metairie... Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Mark, back in the Day, those places were called "Filling Stations" or, in Conoco (Continental Oil Co.) and Ashland Oil's instances: SERVICE Stations. Check out the male employees, there. Whatever happened to male employees? Brent, if you could go back in time, and tell that Firesweep vert's owner that his car was going to be very valuable (in 30 more years) he'd probably have said : "Yeah? well give me 500bux for it, right now, and it's yours." He almost certainly kept driving that car til it fell apart, or sold it to someone else (-kid), who drove it, til it fell apart. Sad.
Doctor DeSoto |
| ||
Location: Parts Unknown | With the recent discovery that my DeSoto was a factory promo / in house use car, the "original owner" I have been hunting now for all these years likely was Mother Mopar, herself, making the "2nd owner" to be the actual FIRST ordinary "John Q. Public" driver of the car. He came to own the car some time in 1960. He drove it till 1968, when he nosed it into his garage one last time and buried it in stacks of old newspapers and cardboard boxes full of garage debris. It had already had extensive rust repair done in 1960, and was a rustbucket again by 1968, spending it's whole life in NY and Wisconsin. I would love to speak with this guy and ask him why he didn't just junk it like the other 468 owners did ?

Doctor DeSoto |
| ||
Location: Parts Unknown | I have had the card for years. The code is 89?41 (can't remember the middle digit, but we discussed this at some length in thread about 6 months ago and I wrote it in there). No one can confirm exactly what use the car saw, but the 89-series was confirmed by multiple sources as being promo / in-house use and not sold to a dealer. CHS told me 20+ years ago that this number was too high for their records and "must have been a clerical error".

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | ...Not that you've got the IBM in front of you, now (why not???), the IBM's from some years/marques will have semi-plain- language identifying the Engineering Dept or Sales Zone that a car was sold/delivered-to. I recall, now, that your car's IBM only had that weird 89xxx sales code on it. But, I don't recall your having determined that it was first 'sold' to the public, in 1960...and, then, sold again in 1968. This isn't the thread for that discussion....maybe you can find (in your copious free-time) your original thread, and continue this/its discourse, there. Edited by d500neil 2012-07-14 12:45 AM

Location: Parts Unknown | Not much more to add. The "2nd owner" had the car from 1960 to 1983. He quit driving it in 1968 and buried it in his garage. The next owner had it from 1983 to when I bought it from him in 1995 (?). This history I established through speaking with the previous owner who provided some historical background after going back and speaking with the 1960-83 owner. As an aside, photos of the 1958 Chicago Auto Show include a Fireflite or Firedome convertible in the background of shots showing some of the other cars in the DeSoto display. I have only seen these in B/W, but the color could very well be Haze Blue Metallic, and given the 89XXX code, it is quite possible that this was the car I now own. Given the production run of 474, how many of these do you think they pulled aside for in-house use ? I'd like to see more photos of that show that might confirm what model it was, or better yet, color shots to confirm the actual paint color. What I know is that the 1960-83 owner bought it in Syracuse, NY after some serious repair was done to the car. As he explained it, he bought it after an insurance company totalled it and had the work done to fix collision and rust damage. It seems there may have been no previous driver, and the car got trashed by Chrysler and ultimately offed via insurance settlement to be sold to the guy I know as the "2nd owner". I would love to iron out how this actually played out. Not sure how to do it at this point.
