Uh, what's a Matador?

In 1960 Dodge introduced new names to all models. The Full sized 1960 Dodge line ( 122" wheelbase) was relegated to Matador and Polara, replacing Royal and Custom Royal. Nothing for Coronet. The name Matador was not used in 1961 or later, and AMC picked it up in the late 60s. The smaller sized 1960-1961 Dodge Dart ( 118" wheelbase) had three full series, Seneca, Pioneer and Phoenix. Clearly Dodge was trying to move into the low priced market to compete directly with Plymouth, by introducing the Dart in 1960, and leaving the full sized Dodge with only 2 models in the intermediate price lineup. By 1962 things got really messed up as Dart and Polara shared the same wheelbase and body. What had been the Polara in 1960 and 1961 now was the Custom 880 series in 1962. By 1963 the Dart became a compact, like the Plymouth Valiant. They didn't get things right until 1965.

Someone who lives geographically close to Country Classic Cars took this picture and posted it on Facebook. Since my parents owned a 61 Seneca, I like this one.

I don't know when this was taken, but it looks to be early sixties. It's in a Melbourne suburb I think.

I am putting this video clip in this forum because at 1:43 minutes into it there is a nice rear shot of a 57? Windsor. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/?p=18364

The story is of a (good) son finding a "48 Plymouth convertible for his parent's 60th anniversary. Pretty cool story but was pleasantly surprised to see the photoclip of the Chrysler. How many kids would do this for their parents today?

Those kids, above were learning a profession and carrying on a family tradition.

My dad's 57 CRL was visited 5-times by such entrepreneurs.

...Here's a screen shot of that 57 Windsor, from the Haggerty's insurance video, above.

A few FWLKs

The next time you're standing in the parking lot of a modern shopping mall, remember this photo (and many others like it that have appeared on this thread) and the colorful cars. Compare it to the color of the cars in the lot that you're standing in. I'll bet most of them seem pretty drab by comparison. One of my college professors once remarked that the color of one's automobile reflects the mood of the owner...confidence, satisfaction for bright colors, less so if the colors are subdued. Hmm.

That is a great photo. Although, it seems as a large number of the cars are missing hubcaps/wheel covers. ?

NICE pants; NICE car.

There are a lot of photos of this car being sold.

This car is one of two real OEM-all-red 57 Dodges that I've ever seen.

Most likely a speed competition of some sort...timed runs on an airport runway, maybe? There are some aircraft hangars in the background, and several airplanes parked to the right of the building. I enlarged the photo enough to see two large twin engine planes with yellow noses, and several to the right of them that I couldn't identify. Our local drag strip required removal of wheel covers before you could run.

50+ years on and I still cannot believe that Mopar management bought off on putting those
toilet seats on the rear decks of Forward Look cars. Could anything be more incongruous to
the angular fins and swept lines than this big, round lump inexplicably appearing on the deck
lid ? Harder still to believe is the that public signed on for them in fairly large numbers !

Chrysler Corporation unveiled the experimental Plainsman "idea station wagon" during the January, 1956 Chicago Auto Show.
Mounted on a 115-inch wheelbase Plymouth chassis, the 2-door wagon accented a Western theme with its "Palomino beige" finish,
gold-colored Texas Longhorn medallion and hand-worked bronze trim which was chrome plated. A unique cantilever, stepped roof
contained a centered louvered ventilator that provided draft-free ventilation of the 8-passenger cabin, and the padded white fabric top
covering the rear two-thirds of the all-steel roof was weather-resistant. Clever idea on the Plainsman that made its way into the
1957 station wagon models by Chrysler Corp. was the spare tire and wheel hidden behind the right wheel and accessed via a lift-up panel
