I think Panhards are hilarious in both name and appearance. I had never really noticed this sad little puppy of a car before. It looks like something from the Disney movie "Cars."

Doc, I can't tell you that I think a Citroen is beautiful. And I certainly cannot express my opinion on the finer points of their design in the way you have requested. But I can tell you why I like them.

When I was growing up, my family was MoPar. Everything in my yard was either a Plymouth, a Dodge or for sale. With my dad making ends meet by fixing and selling used cars out of our yard, lots of Forward Look iron drove in and out of our driveway back then, and they are all enduring memories.

But those strange little cars at the end of my street - that pair of Citroens - captivated me, with their sleek futuristic look and those quirky roof mounted tail lights. To my childhood eyes, they literally looked like something from the future or from space.

Now I hear from some that they were good driving cars as well. You know, my dad used to tell me they were good cars. Heh... Just not as good as a Plymouth I guess...

Fear not. Forward Look is definitely my favorite look. But please forgive me if I point out the Citroens when I see them. For me, they are part of a very cherished set of childhood memories.

Panhard... *snicker*

Sorry... roof-mounted turn signals, the tail lights were in the bumper area.

Been out on mission. No internet. Yeah, ... those Panhards are purposely ugly ! I am amazed !

But be it a Panhard or a Citroen (notice those crazy buses are Citroens too !), I too notice them and find
them interesting. Just bacause something is painfully ugly or worse, doesn't mean it isn't somehow cool in its
own right .... it's just hideously ugly ! We had our own Ciroens in the U.S. AMC made them and called them
"Pacers" and "Gremlins". They were *interesting*. Not something I'd own, but certainly worth walking over to
look at.

I found the DS to be as futuristic looking as a garden slug on wheels. Something I saw all too much of in wet and
slimy Seattle. The puckered axxhole where they stuck the rear lights put me over the top for giving them top honors
in the "You're Joking, Right?" competition. Especially when lined up against 57 Lincolns, DeSotos, and other GOOD
looking cars of the era.

On the other hand, European cars were in a whole other league in terms of styling after the 1930's. Mercedes was
still styled like a derby hat, Porsches looked like garden slugs without all the windows of the DS, and of course the
Volvos and Saabs looked like mini versions of late 40's American cars. Nevermind the delightful Panhard !

I guess I need to make a point of driving a DS some time. I'll just have to do it at night in an unfamiliar city where
no one will know me or see me doing it !

Now to a moment of useless knowledge; Citroen DS - the DS shall be pronounced Deesse - Google that for an amusing moment.

Another moment of useless knowledge - our female dog is named Deesse but we use to write that DeS

Dave's IMP photo, above, is reversed.

Can anyone correct its image?

Note the size of its 14" tires.

And, to expand on Sven's information, another piece of who-cares knowledge is that the F-word's
mid 60's+ top-models were only known (pronounced) as being El-Tee-Dees, and not "Limited"
because 'limited' was already being used by Buick, on its top model.

In regards to driving a DS, two short comments. 1. I drove a friend's DS on a dirt road with ridges on the corners. The car handled the corners better and was smoother than anything I'd driven before that. 2. I got into a race against a DS on a dirt road. I was driving an IH Travelall. Not only did I lose, but I was the only one racing.

That's probably the same motel photographer, who traded in his 55 Chrysler for the 58 Desoto that we've all seen,
many times, on this thread.

Quite the blinged-up Bel-Air there ! Bumper guards, wings, AND hockey stick rocker mouldings !

These may be re-popped today, but in 1980-90, they commanded serious dinero.

Happy Motoring!

Boy; I wonder what solid, heavy object(s) hit that 55 Plymmie, in the Tornado.

The sheetmetal, as we all know, was/is very thick and tough (14 ga.??).

The tires' condition was not apparently the cause of that 58's roll over event.

Speed kills.
