This Photographer moved around, I think.

On each of these postcard is the same 1959 Dodge, with the same license plate.

Is it just a well placed scratch, or does that 58 in the bottom photo show a D-500 emblem ?

If a photographer shooting his own car is your 'thing', you should have a look at this auction:

Love the old photos...and another one brings back personal memories. The Parkway Inn in the little town of Ray, ND was an after-game stopping point when our high school sports teams played Ray or Tioga. Since I graduated in 1959, the timeline is perfect.

Here's one I've been looking for, for years.
Clearly enough, because it features a 1957 Dodge D500
But..., there's also this - what I think is - 1960 Plymouth
Now, I know the DeSoto Adventurer is recognisable with it's higher rear window. This car has such a window too. What does that mean in the case of a 1960 Plymouth?

Wow! The Plantation is still there and looks very much the same ! As for the high back glass on the Plymouth, starting in 1960,
one could order the window either way on just about every car AND roof type. Someone more familiar with these can give the
details, but there were high and low back window versions of a number of cars. Ian ???

The High back Windows - for 1960:

OK start with 4 door Sedans, they were standard on the US built Adventurer 4 door sedan (but not Canadian) but optional on the New Yorker Sedan - strange. N/A on Dodge and Plymouth or lesser Chrysler and DeSoto sedans, apparently.

Four door hardtops -Standard on Fury, Polara, Phoenix New Yorker, & Adventurer, optional on Belvedere, Matador, Fireflite, Windsor, & Saratoga. There was NO Pioneer four door HT.
Two door hardtops - standard on Fury, Polara, Phoenix, optional on Belvedere, Matador, Pioneer. On Chrysler and DeSoto all rear windows were high back by 1960.
The four door high back windows were all the same from Plymouth through Chrysler.
The two door high back windows on Dodge and Plymouth were completely different from DeSoto and Chrysler, as the Dodge and Plym. used a different roof than Chrysler and DeSoto .

I'm not sure if this was the same in the 1961 model year. For 1962 however, on four door hardtops the high back was available ONLY on the New Yorker 4 door HT., unless you got a Canadian built four door hardtop, where it was standard on Windsor, Saratoga as well as the (imported from Detroit) New Yorker four door hardtops. ( Canada was still using the Windsor and Saratoga names in 1962 - no Newports or 300-Sport). The 62 Dodge Custom 880s apparently? all used the low back rear window.

If someone else here knows more and can correct me on some of this feel free to do so. Bill Watson maybe ?

Two door hardtops - standard on Fury, ... optional on Belvedere,

So, the 1960 Plymouth featured in the postcard above is either a Fury or Belvedere?

It should be by the look of it. I believe there was no Savoy 2 door HT but I could be wrong.

It's a Fury as it has the large circular badge on the fins, the Belvederes have three hash marks running down the fins. Also is a local car as on Washington plates.

Thanks Mark!

I've 'adjusted' the description on my postcard webpage accordingly.

And learned something too!

I'm not sure about the license plate, exactly, but here are some crops/enlargements.

The Dodge D500 reads  CBJ075. I'm not sure about the Plymouth...

Would be quite something if we could trace it back to a car one of us owns now...

*****************************************************

The other looks to read ABD 550. The "A" would indicate King County - Seattle area - so this car would be a traveler. The Plantation
sits right on the corner of one of the near Valley cross streets and what was then U.S. 10 (the route of today's I-90) that runs between
Seattle and Boston ... so it is/was a MAJOR traffic corridor. Judging by the looks of the building, I would say it dates to the 20's and was
intentionally built as a themed roadside diner. It has gone through many hands, even in my 13 years here in Spokane, and had trouble
staying open as a business.

"C" indicated Spokane County, so the other car was a local.

These places aren't around anymore because this society doesn't appreiciate history. The elderly are looked down on and not really respected. Its very sad. I spend some time looking at the changes at locations and its incredable how things have changed.
There is a little drive-in food joint in Camas, Wa. Its called the "Little Old Maid". Its been in the same family since opening in 1954. The waitress still writes the order on a note pad. She said they were a little concerned when the McDonalds when in next door years ago, but no problem. By the way, the burgers and tator tots were great!

Wonder why all these great places aren't there any more?

In part, many downtowns lost their relevance due to urban sprawl and many of the old drive-in theaters, drive-in restaurants, motels, amusement parks, camp grounds, etc. were in the path of that urban sprawl.

Plus chain supermarkets, fast food places, general merchandise stores, etc., overwhelmed the "Mom and Pop" operations.

It's not really that simplistic, as there were other issues at work, but these were contributing factors.

**********************************************************************

A great transformation in American culture was born in the years after WW2. It started earlier, but really took off after the
war. A "newest-is-best" mentality was promoted with all sorts of advertising, where style became important beyond substance.
Our very own Forward Look was nothing more than a cog on the wheel of this phenom, and like those things that came before it,
the "space-age futuristic" stylings of the late 50's were ground up to make way for what came after.

It is hard to see this when the mind locks on to that particular time frame as "the best" and places a value of greater substance
over others in the evolution. I know I do. But to the great marketeer to whom all this only means revenue, it was all just a
gimmick to create sales. I can't get with that and I resent it, but that is the reality. If it ain't drawing in people and spending dollars
then the moneymakers of the world are going to "adjust" to get those bucks a-flowing. Spelled out, that means chasing the latest
styles and ripping out the old ones.

Long live the Forward Look !

These before and now pics are great. I own a book thats called "Portland - then and now". On the left page is the pic from the 1910-20s, and the right side page is the current shot.

You know, this is a great thread but it's quite depressing! The contrast of then compared to now is anyway... wow.

I've never seen a mobile home quite like that one. A split - level one.

It was an available option in Canada.

I'm guessing, from the shades of colours in this black and white pic, that the car up there has a dark blue roof, pale blue fins and lower body and white upper body. There's a Custom Royal sedan in similar colours in the Canadian 1957 Dodge brochure.

There's a member here who owns an original Canadian Red/White/Black 1957 Dodge.

Here is the thread about his car:
