A 65 Mercury showed up at my shop today. It's steering wheel was partially cool because the front part of it was clear. Love the old cars.

Oysters

======================================

Looking at the Oyster Creek Inn pic above, I was thinking "That looks SO familiar !", so I
Googled it and came up with a place on the ocean shore in NJ. Checking "images" led me to
a great website of local historical photos, and shur-nuff !!! ... that place is right in my old
back yard ! Here's a couple other shots of it at different times. For those who have never
driven Chuckunut Drive, it is a wonderful 30 +/- mile getaway from the Costco/freeway BS
we all get stuck with.

AFAIK, the oyster joint is still in operation and is a great place to eat.

No FL, but a rarely seen car here. I think a Kaiser Manhattan.

And there's also an "oyster hunt" promotion here

Man, this thread is amusing. Chuckanut, that is a hell of a name! That photo of the lodge made me shiver just looking at it. The hoons must have some fun driving in that white stuff.

And campaigning the Convertible?, well, "run what ya brung" I suppose.

I was told by my mother's cousin who lived on Chuck A Nut Drive that this is the longest road in the world?last time I spoke to them in the '90s they told me in'58 they wanted to buy a new Imperial but the trunk was too small so they bought a '58 Lincoln instead.

I spent a weekend at Timberline lodge back in the late 60s learning to ski. Had my 58 Fury with me and had to pay the guy plowing the parking lot $10 to jump it because it wouldn't start in the cold.

In the design studio

Checked with a friend whom I thought my know one or both of these gentlemen. Learned two things: My friend expressed surprised that a clay model was being done of a '58 when the changes from '57 were so small. Second, the man on the left is Al LaCroix. Started at Chrysler as a clay modeller and became a designer later in his career. No I.D. on the man on the right thus far.

Something is not lining up. Maybe they moved ? The old place was in the gulch by
the hairpin turn. This new photo shows it on the straight road overlooking the water.

Or are we misidentifying that old pic ?

I have been out of that area for more than 20 years, and Chuckanut/Bellingham was
not in my close area of constant travel anyway. Hmmm ....

The Oyster Bar and Oyster Creek Inn are two different businesses located several miles apart on Chuckanut Drive. (I lived in Bellingham for 18 years.)

I've seen a few pics of converts being raced. I don't know why either. You'd think, besides the weight, they would twist quite a bit. Not much rigidity there. Good ole' 2 door post worked better I'd think.

That Oyster house is becoming popular. I just saw yet another different photo of the place on the '55-'56 Chrysler Facebook site.

These images came from the book titled American Funeral Cars & Ambulances Since 1900 by Thomas A. McPherson published in 1973. I never knew that FL cars were used by funeral or ambulance coach builders.

I Think that the chassis flex (which is relevant in dragracing) is less on the convertible with its X-frame Rather than any other body type of that Plymouth. Correct me if i am wrong.

I guess it makes sense to use a convertible for the flower car conversion, but kind of a shame though. These cars were stored inside at the funeral homes and kept in imaculate condition until they sold them, probable after 4-6 years I would guess. Then the next buyer more than likely kept them outside which because of the roof modifications they leaked and rusted them out. THe factory window seals leaked on them anyway which took out the floors etc. People did'nt think these cars would ever be desireable which makes no sense because the first time I found my first 60 Fireflite hardtop Sedan in about 1985 I was hooked and I just knew they would be sought after and going up in value continually. An era of auto design that would never return.

Hola Yo'll

As you look at the car turning into this Travel Lodge --- do also look at the car in front of it.

Hola Yo'll

As we were growing up our Dad always like MoPar's. I do not have a photo of his 1959 four door Sedan. We called it "The Green Dragon".
All I can do is attach a link ... http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/mopar/59ply/bilder/4.jpg . He still was droving it in 1970 loaned it once
to me.

He told me that since I liked fins --- then I should feel "At Home". Wait until 16:24'ish and I'm standing in the back wearing a cap that appears
as if I sat on it - ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNvqblnD0Fs .
