How many 1960 Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto or Chrysler 4 -door sedans do you ever see with the sky high rear window ? Usually this window is on the 4 door hardtops and even so, not all of them. There's a 60 Adventurer so equipped on Ebay right now, in Australia. It looks like a good solid beast.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120155704217&indexURL=1&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting

I just found another of the same on Ebay,  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DeSoto-1960-Desoto-Adventurer_W0QQcm... same rear window, 4 door sedan.  I owned one back in 1976, it had the small rear window.  I haven't ever seen a sedan with the sky high window.

My '60 Adventurer (4d sedan) has the same window - I believe all '60 Adventurers had it and Fireflites had the smaller rear window.
How is it with Chryslers? Which of them had the bigger window? Where these available on Dodge or Plymouth sedans?

The rear window in mine was broken when I bought the car. It had been sitting on a parking lot and someone had busted all the windows. The rear window glass was really hard to find and I used a plastic plexi-glass one for years. I finally scored one from a Canadian build 4d ht Adventurer that was too far gone...
Actually, I still have wrong non-bubble repro windshield on it - that was the only one I could get at the time - but as it still is perfect I really don't want to replace it...

Kjell,
only this one old one on my office computer (I bought the car in 1990 while studying in Helsinki - it was sitting in a parking lot with busted windows. The engine had just been overhauled but I had to do the crank/bearings again as crank was not straight and it lost the oil pressure. A VERY pretty girl sold it to me - and I got it cheap. I had it painted, tranny overhauled and re done the leaf springs & bushings). Not much visible changed since the photo was taken (years ago) - it now has different tires, rims and the correct hub caps (those are '59 Plymouth ones) - and btw thats the plastic rear window in the picture. The rear wheel molding is still missing. I had a bit of an accident... a '90 Ford Escort t-boned me and I had to replace the rear door - the molding was beyond my skills to straighten. Oh, it now has the reverse light lenses and the reflectors got relocated into the bumper. It's ok driver but relly needs partial resto when the Fury is done - interior is a bit rought, electric wires are dried up/cracked, engine compartment needs to be cleaned up, the rear axle is worn and I just noticed the engine mounts have cracks in them. So, I drive it some but not usually very far from home. It has 383 with 2bbl, Torqueflite, PS, PB, power windows & benc seat and non-functional air-conditioning.

So - MY own 1960 Adventurer sedan did NOT have the large rear window. It was however a Canadian built car. Another bit of interesting trivia is that in 1962 in Canada, all four door hardtops, full sized Chryslers used the large rear window, and all sedans used the small rear window. I have seen photos of many US built Newport and 300 four door hardtops and all seem to use the small rear window. Seems that only the 4 door HT New Yorkers in USA used the large rear window in 1962. Sorry but as you may guess I am a trivia buff and like to collect info on differences between USA and Canadian built cars and these are the first 1960 DeSoto sedans I have seen with the large rear window.

Eric,  what color is that DeSoto parts car ?  I owned mine back in 1976 and it was medium metallic blue with a white roof, and upholstery was blue and black.    I don't know what ever became of the car but I heard about 4 years ago from someone via e-mail that he had found a blue / white 60 DeSoto and it wasn't in very good shape. I then lost track of the guy.  WHen I owned it it was a beautiful car with no rust,  and I sold it to a friend of mine who kept it several years, repainted it and sold it to someone Up-Island.   It had MINT original upholstery at the time with clear plastic covers on the seats.

Ian,

this is the car but you wouldn't want to see it now, previous owner parked it under a big tree and let the elements get at it.Body is totally rotten, rear trunk and subframe..........yeeesh!There are some good trim parts on it but the majority of it is toast.

Eric, that makes me sick - I will post a photo of it later today when I get home. The car was basically mint -all sheet metal,  even the trunk floor,  and trunk weatherstrip front lip were good and you know how bad they can get - and the person who bought it from my buddy was buying it for it's future collector status ( this was about 1985 ) and we understood he was going to enjoy it and take care of it. ................ excuse me I'm going tp the can to throw up.

OK,  Eric,  here's the car just before Barry sold it to someone up-island,  and I believe this photo is from 1985.  I borrowed it that year from Barry ( who I sold it to )  for a friend's wedding who I had promised my 60 Polara to,  but it was out of service come the wedding date so I got the DeSoto.

And Eric, do you have any current photos of the car where it sits at present ?  I would like to see it even though its a pitiful mess.

Ahem,

Ian your question reminds me of a similar situation in regards to buddies enquiring about old high school girlfriends. You're asking me if "shes still as hot as when I had her". Unfortunately Ian she's twenty years older, sun damaged and rain ravaged. Her belly is sagging and in her present condition there's not many who desire her company!

I'll get a pic later this week!

Eric, it doesn't look as bad as you say it is in these pics. Maybe I'm being optimistic but its hard to believe its rotted out as 20 years ago it was perfect, and I mean there was no floor pan rust, no trunk pan rust, no rocker rust, no wheel well lip rust. It was as nice a survivor as you would ever find at the time. Are you a hunter by any chance ? Where does the guy live who let it get like this !!!!

Subject: Sky high window vs small window?

Let me make sure I understand this......All U.S. built Adventurers (4drH.T. & Sedan) have the big window. All Fireflites (4drHT & Sedan) have the small window. All Canadian built DeSotos (4drHT & Sedan) have the small window? (this applies to Adventurers because Fireflites were not built in Canada). Is that correct??

I am also curious which 4-door models from the '60-61 years(& '62 Chry, '62-64 Custom 880) used the high back window and which ones used the low window. It seemed to be a bit random, based on make and model and less about 4dr hardtop vs 4dr sedan. I had never seen a 60 Adventurer with the small window before today, so this is new to me. I went through my photo archive (of hundreds of four-doors) and this is what I came up with.....

Large(lg), Small(sm)
60 Windsor HT(lg); sedan(sm)
61 Windsor HT(sm); sedan(sm)
61 Newport HT(sm); sedan(sm)
62 Newport HT(both!); sedan(sm)
62 300 Sport HT(sm)
60 Saratoga HT (both!); sedan(sm)
61 Saratoga (canada) HT(lg); sedan(sm)
62 Saratoga (canada) HT(did they make them?); sedan(sm)
60 New Yorker HT (lg); sedan(sm)
61 New Yorker HT (lg); sedan(sm)
62 New Yorker HT (lg); sedan(sm)
60 Adventurer HT (lg); Sedan(lg)
60 Adventurer (canada-built) HT(did they make them?); sedan(sm)
60 Fireflite HT(sm); sedan(sm)
61 DeSoto HT(sm)
60 Polara HT(lg); sedan(both!)
61 Polara HT(lg); sedan(sm)
62 Custom 880 HT(sm); sedan(sm)
63 Custom 880 HT(sm); sedan(sm)
64 Custom 880 HT(lg); sedan(lg)
60 Matador HT(both!); sedan(sm)
60 Dart Phoenix HT(lg); sedan(sm)
61 Dart Phoenix HT(lg); sedan(sm)
60 Dart Seneca sedan(sm)
61 Dart Seneca sedan(sm)
60 Dart Pioneer sedan(sm)
61 Dart Pioneer sedan(sm)
60 Fury HT(lg); sedan(sm)
61 Fury HT(lg); sedan(sm)
60 Belvedere HT(i have no pics?); sedan(sm)
61 Belvedere sedan(sm)
60 Savoy sedan(sm)
61 Savoy sedan(sm)

As you can see above, there are a few models that I show having both the large and small back window. This might be because the large window was optional equipment or the differences between the canadian built cars to the U.S. built cars. Were all Canada-built cars (Chry,DeS,Dodg,Plym) built with the small window only? I know someone out there can shed light on why I show some models with both window types. Please modify this list, it is only a guess based on photographs and dealer artwork, so accuracy is not 100%.

As I understand it, the small rear window was standard on 4-door HTs and sedans and the Sky-High was optional -- at least on '61 Chryslers. I don't have it in front of me, but I seem to recall this info being contained in the '61 Chrysler sales brochure. My '61 Newport 4-door HT (in avatar photo) has the small rear window or, as I have always referred to it, "the orange slice" rear window.

 Ian,

take off those rose colored glasses!LOL These pics don't show the severely rotted trunk area and cancerous front/rear fenders. Floorboards are soft and engine looks like it powered the titanic. This car would be a perfect trim/parts donor for a more rust free body.I wouldn't remotely consider this for a resto do to the level of decay.IMHO you would be better off to get a rustfree hulk stateside and move everything over.

Jeff - If it was an option on the '61 Chryslers I would have thought that I would have a photo of the top-line New Yorker sedan with the big window. I have photos of about 20 '61 NY HTs and another 20 '61 NY Sedans and every sedan has the small window and every NY 4drHT has the big window.

As for the '61 Newport, I had about 30 pics of sedans and they all had the small window. I could only find a couple pics with the '61 Newport 4drHT, they were much more rare, so I cannot be sure if a large window was optional. Canadian built cars may throw a monkey wrench into all this.

I don't really want the car back myself, so let the Ontario guy buy it unless you can get it for the glass.  But would like to knock the guy out who let it go like that.  I'm still mad.

Well, if you take it for the glass please let me know - I could use various smaller bits an pieces for my DeSoto too.
