Now that the auction is over will it serve as a guide for pricing? I noticed one comment already to a seller on this forum about their price vs Binder price. I sure will take a hard look at it everytime I consider an new FL investment.

This reporter did not ask good questions and got a lot of stuff wrong (I did not plan the auction!) Should have known since the night before they said Chris was still alive!

Hmmmmmm.  Based on these prices (and after consultation with the Bishop), I figure I ought to be able to buy Rebel's beautiful Chrysler AND his wife and his dog for about $3289.00 US!  LL!

The 58 ambulance was the odd one I was most curious to see what it would bring.

Close to a one-of-a-kind car, custom bodied professional cars like this have a whole different following above and beyond any FL interest. It may also reflect the recent rise in popularity of the once loathed station wagon, who used to be considered nothing more than parts cars, even if flawless originals.

Had that ambulance been built from a Fireflite or Dome, I might very well have been all over it. Neat car for sure.

Someone got a sweet deal on the 58 Firedome Spring Special if it was as nice as photos suggested.

This is a repeat of the 1980s surge in car prices,When noncar people start "investing" in old cars the prices go skyhigh than when they start going to stocks etc the market seems to drop out . Remember the bulk of the people who love old cars are working slobs and they cant pay $100. an hour to have their dream car done ! And now after the surges in the 80s and lately there are lots of restored cars around ,and trhe cars from the 40s 50s the people who had them are getting up in age this will put more on the market.so in the next ten years will those 57 Ch**ys that are very common will still have the value theres a supply ,but will there still be a demand? Our foward look cars are rare, and there seems to be an intrest by a youngr generation ,still this younger generation seems to love their JAP CRAP 4cly buzzbombs (to each his own) but only the future will tell!!! HAPPY MOTORING!!!!

I think they had two too many doors on them.

As has been suggested - this is a good lesson for anybody thinking about sinking a bunch of money into a 4-door collectible. Almost always you can find a good buy on a completed car for less than it will cost you to fix something up. It just requires a bit of patience and dicipline.

I dont know about "crazy cheap". Some low prices, yes, but the market is soft and this is not the time of the year to sell collector cars.

This one auction cannot really set the standards for the market, obviously. I wouldnt refer to it as any guide IMO.

I am surprised that '61 brought that much, it sounds to be rather rough.

The real-world fair-bidding purchase prices,on these cars, which were barely, if at all "driveable", appear to me to be
very reasonable.

A careful (I do realize that that might be asking a lot) evaluation of the cars' condition, their model-types, equipment, and
operational capability, in relation to their selling-prices, does appear to show a reasonable consistency among the auction
results.

Clive's car's condition, or anyone else's car's condition, as long as it is fully operational, has very little relationship to these
prettied-up 'barn finds'.

IMO, the photos of the cars were actually better than their actual condition. Most sat in unheated buildings for 15 or more years. Closer inspection of interiors, engine compartments and undersides revealed serious need of attention. I don't believe any of the cars were prepped for long term storage, meaning anything with fluid in it was gummed up or corroded (gas tanks, brakes, radiators, etc...). Craaaazzyy expensive on several of them after serious evaluation. I think most winning Internet bidders will be unhappy. Just my two cents.

There is a very informative/revealing posting, on the Daily List Server board, on 10/22, by a man who was at the auction, and who was not particularly impressed with the cars' condition.

To find that message, go to the FWDLK's Homepage, find the masthead-categories, & click-on the "FL Archive" board, and go to 10/22 .

That is disheartening. From the pictures the cars looked great. I will withdraw my statement about them going crazy cheap as I did not have the opportunity to check the cars out for myself.

When all is said and done, it is a little bit sad to see such a remarkable collection broken up. Every year of DeSoto! Will it ever be done again? Is there another collection like that out there somewhere? Some of the value was in the feat itself - and that value (whatever it was) was lost in the auction.
