Member Posts: 13 | Yeah, I read somewhere that Boyd pronounced the '57 Plymouth "completely unrestorable". The only cars I have seen that looked worse are those in the Northeast junkyards where rust had broken them into half! However I wanna understand this more clearly, will this car really turn to dust or was it something made up by Ultra One? Just letting ya know that I signed up on the Ultra One forum and told them it's a historically important car and I wouldn't take any chances judging on the shape the car was in. I asked them if there was any way to test if there's any metal left first before any attempts of derusting is peformed. Edited by MoparsRule! 2008-01-19 4:09 AM

That said, it definitely COULD get destroyed at/by the hands of Man, in various ways. As long as the car can be kept from continuing to exist in a warm, moist environment, it should have stopped deteriorating the day that it was taken out of its vault/tomb, on 6/15/07. Unlike "Christine", it can not restore itself, AND, it is beyond being 'restored' by humans, either, but, it could/can be maintained and preserved in its as-unearthed condition by a conscientious museum-owner.

Interesting to read that their cleaner may Not touch the Red Mud that has hardened like Concrete.. Maybe that is what is holding the Frame together..

Buckeye, Arizona | Well Bart, I honestly thought that, if the intentions were to preserve rather than restore, that they would be able to do the job with something that's non-abrasive/physical impact. There's no doubt in my mind, though, that her sheetmetal is a d@mn site thinner than what it was as new. Can't wait to see when they start working on the frame, suspension etc. to see if there's any possible way to salvage what's there to hold her up. Looks like concrete blocks - front as well as rear - are in place at present.....

Member Posts: 13 | Glad to see the latest pics, the car is definitely very weathered but the metal is still there in places, just thinner and pitted. More solid than I previously thought. The car can be compared to my old 19th century cans with forged nails inside. The cans are very rusty but I found that metal is still beneath the patina, just thinner than they used to be. As thin as soda cans I would say. But they're still solid and have not gotten any worse since I got them because I kept them dry. Basically they got weathered from their long stay in a mine where the previous owner found.

For comparison how it was at Tulsa (bottom picture). If you look at the original pic of the headlight door, all that white blotchy stuff is corroded aluminum. It's the equivalent of rust on steel. It would probably crumble off if given a good washing. Ultra-Hype's process just removed this stuff, leaving only good metal.

I've seen engines that have sat as long as 37 years ('51 Studebaker, in my case) turned over an ran again, but that was in dry storage under - as they say - optimal conditions, as in dry conditions. This baby's 5 decades worth of water-logged - the thing is probably fused to one solid hunk of iron inside by now..... Edited by 1959Fury 2008-01-21 7:31 PM

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Where they've worked on it looks 'better', sure...but what have they done with the rust that's crept UNDERNEATH the paint? Nothing. And that's just the body. I will say, the best thing that can happen for this car now is to try and preserve what's left...but this company's going about it the wrong way I think. They should have dipped the entire, intact car in rust removing solution, for as long as it takes. Too bad it didn't go to somewhere like Rusteco, that company could have done that I'm sure.

Posts: 19146 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: bishop, ca | Yeah, Larry; but the entire POINT of preserving the car in its as-unearthed condition was to CREATE and maintain interest and wonder, as to what the car's condition might be, or might-become, underneath the crud, corrosion, and the cosmoline, if those things were to be removed. Now, we may all get to see what-lies-beneath, and therein the charm and the mystery, and the attraction of the car dies... Magic tricks are no longer any fun, when the stunt is revealed, and strippers (used to, anyway) keep some of their clothing on, for a similar reason (to maintain interest in what is being shown, or revealed). PT Barnum never shaved the Bearded Lady........

Member Posts: 23 Location: California | Aww that's not very fair. This car is HARDLY the bearded lady. I'm not missing the point but the 6" strip of the bumper boyd's monkeys cleaned was a strip tease to me. At the convention center I looked at the headliner and it had a nice round spot where no water/ related contaminates got to and it was saggy but looked really good. I want to see the car cleaned up. I'd travel again to see that car anywhere. It will never loose its allure and I'm darn glad I took the trip and had the experience. Did anyone really expect that car to be perfect after 50 years and 2 floods in Tulsa's history? I like the well optioned cars and Furys as much as anyone but they aren't what that car IS. Miss Belvvy was a rather stripped down 2-dr HT. I like to see those and '57 heaven's car was nice.. but wasn't an accurate depiction of Miss B. I would have liked to have seen some money spent on locating another that was REALLY identical the Miss B. All I ever see is high optioned 2-dr HT's and that is not they way it was for the majority. My .02.... Edited by Lockjaw58 2008-01-30 1:08 AM

I honestly hope they don't "tour" the country because anything can happen along the distance and that puts this beloved artifact in danger. I'd like to see her to be placed in a museum safe from potential weather and environmental hazards like tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.. As for our friend boyd.. he needs to keep himself and his associates as far away from all the cars he so generously misrepresents. I have absolutely no respect for that man and his crew now what-so-ever. I never thought him talented and now I know he has no taste and class to speak of as well.
