My 11 year old son Jordan and I built this 1957 300-C over the past couple of weeks, we both did some glue, assembly and paint work. I haven't done one in years, in fact this model has been sitting in our basement for about 5 years. Its an ERTL 1/25 scale and still currently available - you can even buy it built. My son has been pestering me for a long time to build it so I finally said yes, and we had fun doing it together. The paint color isn't correct I know, but its what I had sitting on the shelf. I have a number of other FL models that I built in the early eighties - 1960 DeSoto, 1959 Dodge CR, 1959 Chrysler NYer, 1960 Plymouth wagon, and a 1962 Chryler 300.  

 Anyone else out there into building these ?

Hell of a nice job! I approve of the colour (looks the same as my roof)! I used to do models, and have been searching for a model of a 57-8 Plymouth/Dodge...know where you can get the 300 like yours??

I will finish it someday, It is a 58 Belvy turned into a 58 Fury lowrider. I like to do alittle custom work on some of my kits. I have been looking for the 300 model for the past few months, but have not been able to find it around here. Wal-Fart had it not to long ago. Your car looks great by the way.

Location: Hilton New York		Did anybody ever do a 57 Dodge ? I can't believe Franklin and Danbury have completly ignored these cars. They have done Plymouths and Chryslers and Desotos but no 57,58 or 59 Dodges. In fact I don't think anybody has. I did see a resin 57 Dodge once on e-bay but it was 1/43rd scale which is pretty small, I would love to have a 1/24 or larger, anybody know of any?

Location: morehead, kentucky		There was a beautiful 59 Plymouth model that just sold on Ebay. It was totaly decked out with cloth interior and carpeting. That car brought 390.00. I actually bid upto 150. It ws just a beautiful car, and I belive it was just a rebuilt Johan promo model like the one pictured above.

LARRY.. Stop Looking, They Do Not list any for a 59 Dodge, The Only Model i have found available is the Promo , They show up occassionally on US Ebay, But most are Warped, and if they are good condition,they sell for a couple hundred $$$$$$$ at least.. I too have been searching for a few Years, I have had a few Stores check it out on the Web, and they all say Not Listed..

Location: Spencerport, New York		Hey Guys ,keep looking. the Johan 59 Dodge was re-issued by Excel plastics as an unassembled Promo in a plain white box. They are molded in modern plastic and do not warp! There were a lot of them around Carlisle maybe 8-10 years ago for about$12.00each. I have a 56 Desoto and a 56 olds from the series but unfortunately not the 59 Dodge. Dick W.

Do an evilpay search for 1/25 scale models (Dodge/what-ever) & your search-list should be very short.

There are resin-formed 1/25 scale Dodge models, but, resin-models can be roughly molded, and this one will require the
grille/bumpers to be sent out, for plating.

There is a company, forget its name, which made museum quality 1/25 Dodge models; but, to its credit, makes/made only
real limited-production models; once a car is produced, no more of that particular model is made.

You will see 57 CRL convertibles, bringing hundreds-of-dollars, on the 'pay, occaisionally.

Location: Central Ohio		I built all the Jo-han FL models nearly 20 years ago and still have them on display today. I used to be a very skilled model builder so these models are very nicely done. I have the newer AMT models mentioned above, but I just can't motivate myself to build them. I have not built a model since the early nineties!

Does anyone know if you can buy spare parts for the Danbury mint models? I would love to get some extra mirrors since the original mirrors on my Jo Han models fell off ages ago!

Location: The Mile High City		Thanks for posting this thread Ian! Here is my AMT '58 Belvedere modeled to look like my canyon gold and iceberg white Belvedere coupe. I thought the suspension assembly was particularly difficult. Also, the interior was from a Fury, so I had to sand it down and paint it to look like the Belvedere interior. That was tough too. I left the side windows out. My two-year old son got his little crumb-snatchers on it and broke the antenna, lost a wheel cover, and lost the air cleaner - but all of that is fixable and I will have it done soon. I think he and I will do the parts car together. It should be a fun project for us.

Location: Scottsdale, AZ		Those are some cool models!  I know its not FL, but when I was 18 I built a 450SLC model that took me one year to build.  It was about 10-11" long, I don't remember the scale (maybe 16th?).  I actually had my friends Dad paint it actual Ford Red in his shop's spray booth and hand polish the finish.  The guy used to have a polaroid of it sitting on a table in the middle of his full size spray booth!  He had to spray it fine coat by coat so the real car paint wouldn't screw up the plastic body, but it worked.  Had felt covering the floors, package tray and sun visors.  It had spring loaded suspension and front wheels that turned by the steering wheel.  The trunk was sprayed in actual trunk liner spray.  I wired in red bulbs in the taillights and under the dash and white bulbs in the headlights (the kit had no provisions for lights).  It was hand pin stripped by a local guy that did stripping and murals.  I put a lot of work into it and unfortunately, gave it to a young teen my family knew a couple years after it was finished and he had it broken within 2 months.  Wish I had pics of it, I was so proud of that model.

Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada		Nice Plymouth !!!    I pulled a couple more out of my cabinet, ones I could reach without a ladder.  The 1960 DeSoto, a Jo-Han reissue is based on a 4 door sedan in the same color I owned in 1977,  there was a thread on it a few weeks ago,  the car has re-surfaced ( ChrycoPsycho found it ) but was left under a tree for 10-15 years so its rotted out.   The model was incorrectly supplied with dual in line four barrels.  

    The 1959 Dodge is also a Jo-Han reissue of a promo and has no interior.

Last ones for tonight !!!   This 1959 New Yorker is also a Jo-Han reissue of a promo, ( I painted all of these - they usually come white plastic with a contrast color ).   This is based on a 1959 Windsor I owned in 1980-82.

Location: The Mile High City		Ian, I think you are a lot more talented than I am at building those things! Very impressive. I can confirm that building a model based on your own car is a lot of fun. I have the Danbury Mint 58 Fury, which has tremendous finish and detail, but I always prefer to look at the gold and white Belvedere that I built and painted to my own standards! I wish AMT made a 58 Dodge.

The 57 and 58 New Yorkers are Danbury
The 60 300-F is Yat-Ming
The 56 300-B is Maisto

Location: Michigan		I live in michigan and don't have a heated garage so models are a good way to get my FL fix
during the winter months.
I turned this 300 into a conv. but the paint didn't turn out well so it became a junker project.
Still a long way to go on this one but here it is so far. It's actually ALOT more work to make
one of these junkers than a nice car.

Location: Michigan		I like that blue 300! It looks to be a really good job, but I hadn't seen that one before.

A bad paint job literally was the deciding factor in this becoming a junker. The closest paint color I could find to
gaugin red turned out to have a skin like texture when applied. I tried clear coat but the two paints weren't compatible
and it looked even worse. I bought model paint stripper but it didn't work on the odd fluorescent color.

I had built an Edsel junker and even won a contest with it years ago. I think it irritated the other people who entered highly
polished models! The Edsel and 300 damage is modeled after several thrashed FL's I found rotting in some swampland so the
decay is accurate.

It's fun making these junkers, just figuring out how to make the damage. Crushed rock salt for shattered glass, painted hairs for
wires and napkins and TP for headliner and seat material with shredded cotton ball coming through. Worn vinyl is made by applying
thinner to paint till it wrinkles. Dullcoat, cigarette ash and paint thinner residue mix well for body crud.

The 300 still has a long way to go before being finished, applying the crud in layers is the trick to making it look right.

The Edsel fell off its shelf and needs to be repaired but here it is...

AND, to clarify my post above, I don't so much agree with the "nerd factor" (maybe cuz
I'm a nerd . . . ) but the "Kinda makes me sick looking at them though ... they are TOO accurate !"
is what I agree on -

I built a ton of models as a kid with my dad - all got thrown out - might have a few left -
gotta go to moms and see . . .


I do have a few yet to build, just don't have the time . . .

Here's another junker 300 model I found, difference is that this one appears to be a non-rusted, solid restorable California car !!! This model appears to be an altered Franklin or Danbury Die-Cast - not a plastic kit.

I`ve been building models since...I don`t remember...

Well anyway, here are a couple that I have built. The 1960 DeSoto and the 1962 Chrysler are built for decades ago... Must of been somewhere in the late seventies or early eighties, can`t remember... (Just look at the wheel and tire combos...)

The Imperial -59 is being built at he moment, it isn`t finished yet. Me and my son, who I`m passing on this "building-madness" to, have built it together and it`s quite fun when we build these models and to pass the knowledges to him. I hope he gets a fun hobby out of this, as it has to me.

I found that the wheelbase is a little too short and the rear wheels sit too far forward in the fenders, and the tires are too small but other than that its not too badly detailed. This one was my first attempt using bare-metal foil on the chrome trim. They make it sound so easy and say its easier than painting on silver paint but in reality I found it harder than silver-painting the trim, but it definitely looks nicer than silver paint.

Location: Finland		Yes the wheelbase seems too be a bit wrong, when I was studying the model I didn`t notice it at first but when assembled we were in for a surprice... :-D Seems like the bottom-platform is a bit slipped to the front because the front wheels are too forward also to my opinion... Well anyway, otherwice it`s a nice model if you don`t mind that little flaw.

I have also started to use bare-metal foil or actually in my case I`ve used aluminium-tape which is a bit thicker and its because it don`t rip as easy as bare-metal foil. And at the other side, it`s cheaper too...

This thread makes me wan`t to start on the next projects I have going on, the 1958 Fury and the 1957 300C;s, I only have problems on deciding which colours I will paint them... Can`t make my mind which colours to use... The Imperials colour shown above was easy, I used rattle-can paint that I have for my daily user (1997 Neon), I just love the colour... It`s called "Pearl Amethyst"...

Location: Vancouver, BC		I am another one who loves doing model cars. I have over a dozen waiting to be done. The list includes Forwardlook cars such as the Chrysler 300, Plymouth Belvedere and 1959 Imperial, plus a number of Charger, Coronet and Belvedere/Satellite models covering 1966 through 1972. Unfortunately they are all in storage in Vancouver, so they won't get done until I move back there.

Had a number of 1960's models I wished I never tossed - 1960 Valiant (black), 1960 Plymouth Sport Suburban (gold & white), 1960 DeSoto (red), 1962 Valiant (light blue), 1962 Plymouth Fury convertible (green), 1962 Dodge Dart 440 (red), 1962 Imperial (black), 1964 Imperial (turquoise), 1965 Barracuda (gold), and 1968 Charger (yellow with a drop of orange added to the mix). Older models were 1928 Ford Model A, 1931 (?) Chrysler Imperial, 1936 Ford, 1937 Packard, 1940 Ford, 1941 Plymouth, three 1952 Chevrolets (grey 2-door Fleetline, yellow Styleline convertible, blue Bel Air hardtop), 1956 Ford convertible, and 1957 Ford Fairlane.

Being a 'nerd' my cars have interiors that match the exterior colours and are along the theme of the factory offerings. My 1977 Dodge Monaco model was painted the same interior and exterior colours as my one and only new car - a 1978 Dodge Monaco Brougham coupe, Jasmine Yellow exterior with autumn gold upholstery. Have used Duplicolor rattle can touchup paints for a few models over the years.

Never used the foil for the trim, always used the silver paint. Being stuck with bifocals now, doing side trim with paint is not as easy as it once was so I might try the foil or aluminum tape instead.

Location: Michigan		Chrycoman you MUST try the bare metal foil. I wouldn't even bother building a 1950's car model
if this stuff didn't exist.

I've tried other brands but Bare Metal by Bare Metal Foil Co. is by far the best. Stay away from
the 'high shine' version though. It's too shiny and harder to work with. Be sure to use a brand new
blade when cutting this stuff, a dull blade will just tear it and make a mess. LIGHTLY cut around the
contours and the results will be spectacular.

This stuff works on real cars as well. The chromed plastic on my 57 Plymouths turn signal lenses had
worn off on the inner edges so I put on some bare metal foil and it looks great. Hardly noticable and
I'm not sure how long it will last but it works for now.

I built the 59 imperial kit as well. The wheels are garbage. I adjusted the ride height and used wheels
from a 300 kit and it looks much better. Probably the first time in history a 300 has been used as a parts car!!!

surrounding trim gives it an authentic look. Although the model company horribly botched the shape of
the sport tone in my opinion.

Jason... Is that the AMT Plymouth ?. I've heard a lot of criticism about that particular model, in that the body dips down behind the rear of the doors, giving the bodyline a 'banana' bend, & the engine seems to be a cross between a 350 & a 318. I've seen one fixed, but it was a heck of a lot of work. It involved cutting off the roof, cutting the dody in half behind the doors, jacking the arse end up so the bodyline was right, then filling in the 'pie shaped' piece that was formed behind the doors & re-attaching the roof. The good thing about the AMT 58 Belvedere though is the AMAZING detail of the chassis, floorpan & engine compartment. I've always wanted to build a 24th scale of my full size ride with fine under side & engine bay detail, so I decided to use the AMT 58 Plymouth as the base for the 59 Dodge Johan re-issue body. I've cut the hood out of the Dodge & cut the engine bay from the Plymouth. As the Dodge has a 122" wheelbase, the Plymouth's 118" wheelbase had to be lengthened which was acheived by sectioning the chassis & floorpan behind the rear seat step up. The dodgy engine was cut from the Plymouth's transmission which was then mated to a 'correct' 383 from a Revell kit that has received the 58 Plymouth's sump . The heater on the firewall was also cut & filled to more closely represent the 59's heater box, but still needs more work till I'll be happy with it. I have a photo etched hood hinge kit for it, & it will receive a Modelhaus resin interior & dash. Modelhaus have also supplied the chromed tail light housings & correct 59 spinner hubcaps. I'll post some more pix when it gets a little closer to being finished.

I live in michigan and don't have a heated garage so models are a good way to get my FL fix
during the winter months.
I turned this 300 into a conv. but the paint didn't turn out well so it became a junker project.
Still a long way to go on this one but here it is so far. It's actually ALOT more work to make
one of these junkers than a nice car.

anybody can just "put together" a model, what you have there takes TRUE TALENT!...

I just finished this 1957 Desoto Fireflite Explorer wagon from Modelhaus with a few modifications made to the body and chassis to get the wheels to fit.  Exterior paint is House Of Kolor Sunset Pearl Orange with plain white spears.  Interior is medium saddle from Model Car World Automotive Finishes.  20" wheels by Aoshima.  Pegasus Hobbies 19" disc brake rotors and calipers.
