I'd totally forgotten about "King Creole" (B&W pic w/the NY ragtop).

That's not only Elvis standing on the curb, but it's also Carolyn Jones - a.k.a. Morticia Addams of "The Addams Family" - sitting in the NY.....

The website that describes this car is in error. They think it's a 1955 model whereas is is really a 1959 model - not the same thing at all.

Quote: Nor will visitors be able to ignore the bright pink 1955 Chrysler Crown Imperial Convertible (€28,000-40,000), formerly the property of Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant, and first among a number of machines formerly owned by the likes of Mick Jagger and Elton John!
End Quote.

I recall reading a story about Gary Cooper. When asked what he did for fun, one of the things he mentioned was "canyon carving" in his '57 Fury.

Brian Setzer of The Stray Cats 1958 Dodge Custom. These last three artists I have seen "Live" in concert Roy Orbison in the early '80s at The Edinburgh Playhouse ( I was a kid and didn't really know who he was ,but when the curtain came up to the riff of Pretty Woman and the crowd went wild I Knew he was Special).I saw the Stray Cats at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1989 and Robert Plant and Lemmy(of Motorhead) appeared on stage by surprise and jammed with The 'Cats on Eddie Cochran's C'mon Everybody and Gene Vincent's Be Bop A Lula-Brilliant.

NONONONONO...etcetcetc...! That red "D500" is a complete fraud.

That car was a blue 361 car, that a certain person (Paul Garlick) created, over several years, in the late 1980's, to be the
fake-D500, in red, with a fake provenance, to M.M. .

Initially, the car was "rumored" (by Paul) to have belonged to someone 'associated' with M. M. .

I have a photograph, taken on Xmas (forget the precise year it was taken) , with Paul grinning at the camaramen, sitting in that
blue 361 Polara.

Paul, also, famously, tried to pass-off a 1961 Plodge as being an export car, to Mexico--it's that very-nice looking turquoise Dodge
with the PLY front end, and with a Toilet seat trunk.

If not for quick contact to Hemmings Classic Cars, by a Daily List Server member, that car was all-set to have been featured in a
major article in H.C.C. . which reportedly spent $2,000.00 on article-preparation work, on that car.

As I've saved those discussions, I should be able to reference those thread discussions, for those who don't already read the
messages to that "Mailing List" , which membership & Archives are found on the FWDLK's homepage masthead subject-listings.

Mopar Collectors Guide did do an article on the car. I sent them a nice letter, complete with photos, debunking the all the claims made regarding that car - the unknown door panels (1961 Fury), the unusual shade (1961 turquoise), the never-seen-before headlamp trim (optional 1961 - gave them the part number), the phoney spare cover on the trunk (1960 Plymouth) and the gold trim (done by Mr. Garlick as he had done for the red convertible). Also exposed the claim that the car was built in Canada for Mexico - total Canadian 1961 Polara production came to zero.

The MCG article appeared after Mr. Garlick had sold the car on eBay - which included a number of misleading claims to inflate the price. I don't think the new owner would be too impressed with Mr. Garlick if the truth were known.

Marilyn's secretary/house-keeper did own that all-white CRL hardtop, as seen in the newsreels.

She did not own a 1961 Dodge convertible (and certainly not that particular blue 361-engined car.)

Ward Cleaver always drove a Plym, including a '61 Belvy 4 dr. Ozzie Nelson had Mopars too I think - BUT the Granddaddy of ALL Mopar movies is the classic 1962 flick "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" ... it's full of FL era Mopars of all kinds chasing each other and crashing it things all over the Wild West - a great, funny movie, with almost every big actor & comedian of the time - and a Mopar lovers dream!!!!!

firedome - 2008-02-13 12:13 PM Ward Cleaver always drove a Plym, including a '61 Belvy 4 dr.

Actually Ward Cleaver didn't buy MoPar until the third season. He was strictly a FoMoCo man in Season One and Two (1957 Ford). The 1957 Ford's tailfins were tiny in comparison to what was being offered by the 1957 Forward Look line.

I agree with the recommendation of the movie "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, World." It was a 90 minute advertisement for Chrysler Corporation, and the plot was pretty funny too.

I saw Ricky at his home in Hollywood in 1958 and he was driving a candy metallic blue 58 Fury coupe.... not a convertible.

Did you get any photos of it?sounds really flash in candy blue metallic.Since we're mentioning Highway Patrol we'd better mention Fred Gwynne and Joe E Ross in Car 54 Where Are You?...

No pictures.... didn't expect to see him and they likely would have been in black & white anyway. It was stunning with that blue with the gold tone side trim. I didn't ask but I always thought it was interesting that blue & gold were the colors for UCLA, which Ricky was attending at the time.

Have no photos for these examples, either, but Chrysler products were used on "Petticoat Junction" - a 1946-48 Plymouth taxi for Hooterville, a 1953 Plymouth taxi for Pixley, Mrs. (Eva Gabor) Douglas's 1967 Plymouth Fury III convertible, a 1968 Imperial Crown convertible for visiting movie stars, a 1968 Imperial LeBaron for Uncle Joe's visit to Chicago and a Dodge A-100 wagon camper owned by the boyfriend of the one of the girls.

Back in 1959 CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) had a series about an RCMP detachment in a small Canadian town called Shamattawa. The RCMP constables in the series used 1959 Dodge Regent 2-door sedans. About all I can remember of the series are the Dodge Regent (same as Plymouth Savoy) cars.

Those late fifties TV shows were great for us here in Australia... we saw cars that weren't on our streets, and the ones that really made an impression with me were those cop cars on Highway Patrol!

Unlike you, we didn't really get this show until they were using Dodges, so those were the cars we saw mostly even though it seems that Buicks in earlier years get a lot of attention from the websites now.

The opening scene, IIRC, had a close up of a front wheel of the Dodge, tyre horribly distorted, doing a U-turn or something... and Broderick Crawford was a part of our lives.

Maybe I should get the DVDs too?

Funny, you know, looking at some of the web sites, reading the outline for some of the stories, I remember at least one of them and it's 48 years ago and I only saw each show once!

How about some pictures of Peter Gunn (Craig Stevens) and some of the cars on his show? I don't have them otherwise I would post them myself, maybe someone else does. I just watched the great St Louis Bank Robbery with Steve McQueen, no one actually drives a Forward look car, but there is a scene where one of the robbers is doing a stakeout of the bank in a Desoto dealership lot, a nice rear shot of a 58.

You can find some clips of the "Peter Gunn Show" on the 59 Plymouth web site:

http://www.59plymouth.net/ephemera/video/tvshows.html

I don't think the stories hold up all that well but the cars are great. The series has been released on DVD.

McQueen is about to steal a license plate. Looks like a '55 DeSoto in the scene.

I don't have a pic, but I've seen the movie a hundred times. In the Ed Wood "classic" Plan 9 From Outer Space, our hero drives a really nice-looking '57 Belvedere ragtop.

True, but every generation has issues with hats. Look at the American and British kids who fought in WW II.

They wore their uniform hats at all sorts of strange angles so they'd look "jaunty", but they defeated two of the most powerful military forces on the planet.

Wearing their hats correctly did not help either the Nazis nor the Imperial Japanese!

It was more of a grownups world back then, you never would have seen a grown man, in his 30s or beyond wearing a baseball cap unless he was playing baseball.

As I have kept certain Mailing List messages saved, on my home system, I was able to find the beginning of the very-long discussion
on Paul Garlick's 1961 one-of-none Plodge, that, as Bill Watson mentioned, above, DID make it onto the pages of MoPar Collector's Guide
(but not, fortunately, onto Hemmings Classic Car), and that discussion, if you can believe it(!) began on 8/9/04 , with the thread
:" A Truly Odd 1961 Dodge".

You can find that discussion, by going to the FWDLK's homepage, and clicking on "FL Archives", and THEN mega-clicking on the "next-page"
icon, until you go back in time, to 8/9/04 .

THREE (++) years: OMG !!!! How time flies.....

Lawrence Welk had Chrysler Corporation as a sponsor of his TV show for quite of few years. He sold Dodges usually although at least in 1959 he also sold Plymouths. There are a few clips from his show extolling the new for 59 Plymouth on the 59 Plymouth Fury web site. http://www.59plymouth.net/index.html Occasionally some of his shows from the 50s are shown on Public TV. Public TV doesn't show the commercial, but the set design usually lets you know who sponsored the show originally. (Dodge or Plymouth)

I can still remember like it was yesterday, my grandparents had a TV, and the only program they ever watched was Lawrence Welk, (little kids were not allowed to watch, and I was 6) but I could always hear the "Swept Wing Dodge" commercials. A couple times, I "snuck" in to see what they looked like.

He should have taken the car then and not the plane on his last Midwestern tour.

I am not positive, but I think Ike's Imperial was recently put on display at his farm in Gettysburg, I thought I saw it on local TV. For those coming to Carlisle in a couple of weeks, the Eisenhower farm is less than one hour away.

Yes, Ike's Imperial is displayed in the garage at his Gettysburg farm, along with other of his vehicles. I visited the farm
last April after Spring Carlisle.

As for famous people, I nominate my grandfather who drove a 1957 Plymouth Fury sedan (blue body with a white top)from about 1958 until 1968 when he got a new 1968 Dodge Dart, and ten years later a new Dodge Aspen which he drove the remainder of his life. I guess 318's run in the famly.

I don't know what he drove, but the roofline seen through the windshield on that pic is unmistakably a wagon's.

Looks like Jackie's car got a Mopar windshield, but Rocky's limo has got some "Brand X" glass. I have flipped the image of the Governor's car for an easier comparison.

I think we are seeing an accidental trick played on the film by the reflection of the steps or whatever off the top of the glass.  The reason I say that is every OTHER angle taken around that time and that day as shown on this page:

http://www.imperialclub.com/Yr/1960/Kennedy/index.htm

Particularly click to open the first photo and then, when open, click it again to enlarge it.   The Kennedy windshield appears to be as flat as the Rockefeller windshield, only curving enough to butt horizontally into the gasket at the roof line.

The NAGS glass catalog only shows ONE windshield for ALL 1957 through 1963 Imperial body styles: W465.  There simply was not any other piece of glass to fit these cars, nothing for converts or limos or sedans.  W465 was the ONLY windshield and it has to be in both of those cars.   Even though the photo is a year earlier, there was no other glass available for that car!

In 1964 a new glass, W648 came out for all Imperials except convertibles with continued to use the W465.

Nelson A. Rockefeller's '60 Chrysler Imperial Ghia limousine, ordered when he became governor of the state of New York.  Replaced in 1970 by another Chrysler limo.   He later became Vice President of the US.   This is a one-of-one built in 1960 with the 4-window body and a small oval back glass.

In more recent years the car was in the Jay Stream collection.  Mr. Stream was Wayne Newton's manager.

This is presumed to be a 1961 Chrysler Imperial Ghia limousine.  It appeared in the 2004 film "Lemony Snickets".   Nine '61 Ghia limos were built using 1960 sheet metal as twenty five '60s had been ordered by Chrysler but Ghia only completed 16 in '60 so they built nine more the next year.  Like the '60 shown above, this is a four-window body style.  This car differs however in that the back glass in the car is the standard production LeBaron sedan rear window which was supplied by Chrysler.  There is, so far, no history known on this car prior to its appearance in the movie.  It is obviously deteriorated however it appeared at some recent events in San Diego county in California.

Dennis Farina as Detective Mike Torello in the TV series "Crime Story" drives a 1957 Chrysler 300C convertible. Anyone interested in the cars of the late 50's and early 60's should watch this series which is now on DVD. Every episode is chock full of them, and it's an incredibly good, well-made series.

Shown here is Carl Kiekhaefer, owner of Mercury Outboard Marine, with the accumulation of trophies won by the Chrysler 300 racing team during the 1955 and 1956 racing seasons.   He is leaning on the 300B used as a promotional car having won the Flying Mile at Daytona Beach Speed Week in 1956.  While the many race cars would probably properly be said to belong to the corporation, the '56 Imperial Ghia limousine in the background on the driveway was Carl's personal family car.  He drove a black 300B to "work"!

Note on the roof of the car is promoted the fall NASCAR road race at Elkhart Lake, WI, nearby to Merc Marine.   In '56 and early '57, NASCAR briefly actually tried a road racing series.

I regret that I have neither photos nor specific information about the years or models of his Forward Look Chryslers, but I've read that Juan Trippe always traveled to his Manhattan offices -- in the Chrysler Building and the later Pan Am building -- in a chauffer-driven Chrysler or Imperial.

Trippe was founder and president of one of the USA's most influential corporations during the Forward Look era -- Pan American World Airways (Pan Am). A Forward Look Chrysler was the perfect automotive statement for the man who launched America's "Jet Age" with the Boeing 707's in October, 1958.

No pix but the 1960 movie "Key Witness" with Dennis Hopper and I believe a 60 Plymouth 4 dr sedan. I met him at the airport in Columbia, Sc in '88 and I mentioned that "K W" was the first movie of his that I had seen.

Bill Maguire's Motor City Garage pages have now sprouted a pictorial on famous people and their cars...

There is one Forward Look examples, and other Mopars as below, but I do suggest folks click onto the page and have a look at all of them.

The other thing that interests me in these is that there are stars there with humble Plymouths.

The first movie I think of with a FL car, other than the obvious one, is the 1959 Plymouth Sport Fury driven by Don Knotts in "How To Frame A Figg". This is the car and color I will hopefully own one day. Sorry for the quality, but I was filming from Netflix on my tv.

Rock Hudson

aaaah thanks alot for that picture!!!!!! it has been posted in the picture thread before but i lost it. it shows exactly what i love about fl cars or late 50s cars in general. glowing pastel colors in the sunlight lots of curved glass and an airy roofline! 2 tone green with a seafoam body and a darker roof is just breathtaking.
