Expert Posts: 1316 Location: Belgium, 40 miles south of Brussels | I know this car story up until 1995, when it was sold to someone in Limoges. After that, no one saw the car again, and I assumed it had been restored but kept behind closed doors. This car was found in a french barn in the early '90s near a vineyard, and originally belonged to a rich man from Paris who came on holiday in Saint Nicolas de Bourgeuil. Glad to see it again !!

Expert Posts: 1316 Location: Belgium, 40 miles south of Brussels | I contacted the seller : he will be selling the car again thru eBay shortly, this time with detailed pictures. In the meantime, here is the full story of this car : In the early '90s, Alain Lebas, a northern french lover of forward look cars told one long time friend about his passion for '50s american cars. Much to its surprise, his friend replied that his father kept one in a barn, near his vineyard in Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil (near Saumur in the Loire region), but he did not know anything about it. Several months passed until he had a chance to go with his friend see the car. When they opened the barn, he was astonished to see that it was a '58 Plymouth, the exact model he was searching for years. When he dusted off the car, he saw that it was a '58 Plymouth Fury, so his heartbeat went up a little more. When opening the bonnet, he recognized the engine and did not believed what he had found : an original french '58 Plymouth Fury with the optional 350cid Golden Commando engine. He got back to his friend's father and asked for the history of the car. The car had always been in Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil since the '50s and belonged to a rich parisian couple who had a holiday house there and came only a few months each year. The car was a familiar sight in this small village. The man died in the '70s or in the '80s, and his widow kept the car but could not drive it. After a while, she gave it to the father of Alain's friend and died several years later. The father of Alain's friend drove it for a while, but then had brake problems, so he parked it under a cherry tree where it sat for a few years until he put it in the barn. Alain immediately offered to buy the car from the father of his friend, but he did not want to sell for unknown reasons. Not wanting to lose the contact, he became friend with the wine grower and came to see him and his car over the next few years. In 1994, Alain's wife persuaded the wine grower to sell the car in order to offer it for Alain's birthday. They agreed on a price of 25.000 Francs (3750 euros). Alain got the car back to northern France but it stayed outside his house for a full year, because he did not have the garage space to park it. A lot of people stopped by and asked if the car was for sale, but he declined each time. Unfortunately, he went thru personal problems, and finally divorced from his wife. In the end, he decided to sell the car due to financial problems. A guy from Limoges (our eBay seller, no doubt) bought the car sight unseen for 50.000 Francs (7500 euros) in 1995. The car was never to be seen again until this last week. I got all this story straight from Alain Lebas a few years ago. I went to see him because he lives not far from where I live, and still has a few parts here and there. He is known to be a great Mopar mechanic, and I will probably overhaul my 318cid with him when the time comes. He also found a '57 Plymouth Fury in a northern France junkyard in the '80s, but that car went to the crusher. He also has a '60 Chrysler 300F shell with a lot of missing parts and says that he will restore it some day, though I doubt it. This '58 Plymouth Fury is the second known in France. The first one was found in a barn in 1983 in while Columbia was searching for a promotional car for the "Christine" movie debut at the Avoriaz fantastic film festival. This car was badly restored and painted according to the movie, and is now in a car museum. I believe it was for sale not long ago, though I am not 100% sure. Hi Philippe, I checked again and I must say I was completly wrong !! The "Christine" promotional car fate is still unknown : I remember that you told me it was at the hands of a guy in Paris. So you must have the latest info on that ... In fact, I stumbled upon lately on some photos of this car taken when it was for sale at Jolivet in the early '80s. And it looks like it is in some sort of a museum (which it is not, of course). And then my memory mixed everything ... Here are those pictures, taken around 1986. You can see that the car was badly restored. In fact, Columbia selected a shop and gave them 15 days to "restore" the car, before starting its promotional tour !! Here is the same car when it was found in a barn in the Charentes Maritime region :

It says rusty trunk floor and bottom of the rear fenders, cracked windshield, engine doesn't run. Doesn't say if the car is 100% complete or not.

Anyway, I am still wondering what to do ... I have my '58 Belvedere which is still being restored, but I'd be glad to get my hands on this original, unrestored '58 Fury. Though it would mean selling my '58 Belvedere, because I have only the space for one car.

So for all I know, it is the european Christine ! As I said, its whereabouts are unknown at the moment, though it is believed she is in Paris.

Expert Posts: 1316 Location: Belgium, 40 miles south of Brussels | 59caddyhog - 2008-04-14 6:10 PM I bet the power windows are one of the rarest items on a Plymouth. Not on the export ones ... I've seen power windows on all the '58s in France so far. I guess that for the price they were sold in Europe at the time, power windows had to be standard. I know for a fact that a '58 Fury was sold 257,000 Belgian Francs in Belgium when new. That was twice the price of a Citroën DS19, which were already high range models to start with. And by the way, for our american readers, that figure translated into $5,140 in 1958 ! Edited by Chrome58 2008-04-14 1:29 PM

Expert Posts: 1316 Location: Belgium, 40 miles south of Brussels | This guy really doesn't know how to sell a car on eBay ... His item description is short and minimal, and no decent picture are shown. And the pictures he send to the potential buyers, well they suck, they could have been taken by a 5 year old. Let's not mention the fact that he wants a truckload of dough for his Fury. I had been warned about him by Philippe, but now I can see the facts for myself. It's a pity though, because this original french car needs to be saved. I guess either someone comes with the dough and grabs it, or it will wait another 15 years before being sold again.
