In other words, do NOT trust anything this guy spouts, as the DeSoto plant was torn down by then......

Expert Posts: 2932 Location: Lemoore CA | Also, why would they import a t bird hood and Buick headlight rims to the Desoto factory? An obvious farce, still I am interested to know where this car came from and who did build it. The body work obviously took some talent to do

Expert Posts: 1488 Location: Florida | Folks, I saw this "DeSoto" at a very rainy Zephyrhills car show last Sunday. Though I spent only a few minutes looking it over, I overheard many random comments like the ones made above regarding the source of the components that some hot rodder used to build this car. There was no one around the car - had there been I would have informed them about the current discussion taking place and the previous thread here on the Forwardlook list.

Expert Posts: 2490 Location: Kansas City, KS | I don't recall seeing a picture of the "VIN" plate on the last auction. Are they supposed to look homemade like that? The paint sure doesn't look as good in this picture either. Anyone have any guesses on where that grill came from? (4d1e_12.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 4d1e_12.jpg (20KB - 178 downloads)

Expert Posts: 1302 Location: Skaneateles,NY(summer)/Port St.Lucie,FL(winter) | It sure looks like a mid fifties Custom. It looks like a heavily sectioned early fifties Mopar business coupe on a '57 DeSoto frame/running gear. Somebody has done a LOT of work on this car and it's probobly a "barn find" of some sort. I'd like to know the history of this car...it appears to be the sort of Custom you would have found in an old "Rod and Custom" magazine...

Typically VIN or Body ID Serial Numbers used a reversed stamp die set, so the numbers/letters are raised off the background surface. this on uses simple stamp dies......

Extreme Veteran Posts: 474 Location: Rushford Minnesota | The home made looking vin tag makes me wonder if this wasn't some "Home built" Project that had to have a VIN asigned to it to register it in the state it was built in, Back in high school I built a Kit car and had to make a VIN tag like that before the state would let me register it

Expert Posts: 2308 Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | That's gotta be the same car in different hands. They're right about the headlamp doors being sourced from a 1953 Buick. The tail-lamp assemblies are pure 1950-52 Dodge. Of course the dashboard with instruments came out of a 1957 DeSoto. The seats probably came out of a 1980s GM intermediate. Somebody did some wrenchin' on this car(?) but I doubt they were really satisfied with the way it turned out.
