HMMMMM, thought all red interior '61 Plymouths had black steering wheels and columns? That apparently is not the case here, as the pictured red interior car has a red wheel and column.

Any comments?

It's a Canadian 1961 Plymouth and the Canadian parts book does list a red steering wheel for Plymouth and Dodge Dart.

Also saw a red 1961 Plymouth Fury 2-door hardtop at a car show in Seattle about 5-6 years ago - red exterior with red interior with a red steering wheel and column.

I came across another wagon pic. This one was just outside of Albany Newyork. This was taken at least 10 years ago. It was pretty rough then. It was sitting pretty low in the dirt. Note the twin spot lights.

oh how i would love to add this one to my fleet, but sadly that wont be happening....

id plate states its a 'sportsman', but it has original 'custom' side trim, and is a 9 seater (only available on the 'sportsman' models, and rare as) so a little bit of a mystery, maybe special order?
coral and alpine white, 318, electric tailgate, deflectors (rare option), fury bar... hopefully someone restores this one to its former glory.... only just passed $1000us.... a steal at that price... cheers adriana

The car is a 1961 Plymouth Custom Suburban (Belvedere) but it is not a Sportsman. Plymouth never used the Sportsman name. That was used by DeSoto for its 1950-59 hardtops and by Dodge Trucks for their van-based wagons.

The VIN, 3617184942, decodes as :

3 - Plymouth V8
6 - wagon - medium-price - Custom *
1 - 1961 model year
7 - St.Louis assembly plant
184942 - 84,942nd 1961 car off the St.Louis line.

Plymouth did offer a Sports Suburban, with Fury interior and exterior trim, but it was not offered as a 2-door model. The 2-door wagon did not have a special name and was offered one last time for 1961 in the base Suburban (Savoy) series. Previous years had a 2-door wagon in the mid Custom Suburban series. 2,464 2-door Suburban wagons were built fro 1961.

1961 Custom Suburban production consisted of 13,553 2-seat and 6,355 3-seat models. The high-priced Sport Suburban saw 2,844 2-seat and 3,088 3-seat wagons. The base Suburban series also produced 12,980 2-seat wagons. Sport Suburban wagons and Suburban 2-seat wagons were built only in the U.S. while Chrysler of Canada also offered a base Suburban 3-seat wagon - 74 built.

* - The classifications for the series/body style VIN digit -
1 - low-priced non-wagon models
2 - medium-priced non-wagon models
3 - high-priced non-wagon models
4 - sport non-wagon models
5 - low-priced wagon models
6 - medium-priced wagon models
7 - high-priced wagon models
8 - taxi
9 - police
0 - fleet

Plymouth did not offer a "4" model in 1960-61.

It is not a "radio delete" car as 1961 Plymouths did not come with radios as standard equipment. It is simply a car ordered without the optional radio. That bar on the front bumper was optional, sales code 344.

i have seen the top of the range wagons refered to as both 'sportsman suburban' and 'sports suburban'.... the bottom of the range wagon is called 'deluxe' and this is the model that was offered as a two-door.

i am so embarrassed, i checked the chrysler standards catalogue and yes there were 9 passenger custom suburbans produced, only available in V8, their production number is unknown, shows that reading vintage magazines can give you false information...

its the only 9 pass custom suburban i've ever seen none the less....

i am so sorry next time i will check & double check before i open my mouth... sorry everyone.... adriana

Adriana... you've become a star in your own right... you don't need to apologise for getting confused with all the internet garbage that's about...

Just to show how silly things get, ask someone who 'knows' about S4 Holdens. Ask them what differed between a regular Holden and an S4. Bet you hear some utterly stupid things!

What is the best way to convert my wagon to disc brakes on the front, bearing in mind I live in New Zealand?

Vaughan, there are lots of ways, but basically the best way to do it is scour around the wreckers and find a disc that will adapt easily to your hubs. Then get some steel plate, about 3/8" is good, and get it bored and drilled and tapped to suit your 'spindles' or 'uprights' and a suitable caliper.

Suggest you look at discs from a Valiant first, the late ones, VH, VK, CL etc, then maybe go with a 4-pot caliper from some large 4WD, Toyota Landcruiser is popular for this purpose here, though you need to reduce disc diameter for that, something I don't like, or space the caliper out a bit and grind a bit out of the gap.

One more thing that I've noticed with all the pics on this thread... the continuation of the 'reversed fin' theme (as exemplified on the '61 Dodges) in the trim at the rear of these Suburbans.

Adriana, when I come to Adelaide next I'm going to see your wagon!

I will invite myself, Adriana... no question of it...

You've got to admit, apart from your wagon being unique in Australia, you are too! Name any other 19 year old girl whose first car is a Forward Look machine she's dreamed about for years... you won't find any anywhere!

Sometimes you just have to live with your fame. And I've got to meet your dad too, he's obviously something special too.

Adrianna, have you seen the Leave It To Beaver episodes where Ward drives up in his '61 Plymmie? ... I'm sure they're on YouTube someplace. He had other years of Plyms as well!
BTW Eric in Texas who got my '61 undercover car is turning it into a black & white!

Adriana has made much mention of the 'mascara' here... I reckon that would be a very valuable addition to these cars...

They'd prevent those nasty stone chips that any near-vertical painted surface at the front of a car is prone to get on our roads. I'm sure it happens there too?

The Holden is an EJ model... introduced mid-1962, on sale until mid-1963 when replaced by the EH.

I thought you'd get a kick out of this one. My buddy Pete and I were talking about the car while were at the show and I said "Adriana's gonna flip over this one."

The car was built by a guy in Tennessee who has a shop called "Chuck's Hot Rods," or something along those lines.

The two pics above are the only two I took. Pete took a couple as well, but we both neglected to take any of the interior. The car is a four-speed, by the way.

You sound like you're in the same dilemma (sp?) as me with regards to painting your own car Adriana - keep changing my mind, just can't decide! there's so many great colors! Did you ever see a '61 plym in Lavender Metallic? pale purple metallic color...check out the actual color chip of it... WOW! I was going to do my '61 Belvy in that.

no i have not... ive seen the johan promo coupe models in that colour... i guess it was just a little flamboyant in its day, lol... i did see a small pixelated thumbnail pic of a purple ragtop in scandinavia/ finland somewhere, alas i think it was undercoat purple not original purple... ive not seen a suburban either in carnival red so i keep resorting back to the original colour... im so indecisive, what ever i end up deciding i will probably not be happy with anyway so i guess just stick with original and that way i can just blame the original owner... lol... hows your plymmies new owner getting along anyhow? cheers adriana

Adriana, Broderick's (he's named for Broderick Crawford, the star of Highway Patrol) new owner in Texas, Eric, got the 361 HP (High Perfomance) engine running well no problem, and it now sports police car Blcak & White! It's far from the pale purple that I'd have done (flashy color for a flashy car!) so he's no longer undercover, it's a patrol car now! ... just PM christinesbro here and I'm sure he'll send you a pic!

Original 1961 Plymouth paint chips by the paint manufactuers DuPont, Ditzler, Duco etc are readily available on eBay for from $5-10 and well worth having to see the actual color (they spray an actual sample of the factory paint on the chip), to add to the literature that goes with your year car, and helpful for deciding what color to paint it!

oh, thats who owns it now... yeah i have paint chips here, one of the first things i bought... theres a few colours that are rarely or never seen... maize yellow? silver gray metallic? bronze metallic? airforce blue? (this is the colour daves sub was and i persume the new 2door is/ was) oh how i wish i had one of those dealership stands where you could slip the colours behind the car and see what the coupe would look like in a certain colour and a draw of interior fabric samples... someday i will track on down... cheers adriana

Adriana, this is the '61 Suburban located in Montana that I mentioned many pages back.

Looks like a parts car, but a very complete one.

Here are two from Georgia, the first from a private 'collection' way down south, and the second wagon from a boneyard in Lafayette, GA.

Are those factory pine needles on those last couple pix ? I see a lot of cars with this option, but never see it listed on
the order sheet. And how about the blue, hood-mounted barrels ? Those really dress a car up, don't they !

its only because i hunt high and low for them... if someone did this much searching for another specific type of wagon you'd probably get the same results... there does seem to be more coming out the wood work lately however... i guess people are starting to see that wagons actually are liked and desirable to own... adriana
