Expert Posts: 4042 Location: Connecticut | Hey Gang - I recently purchased a driver's door for my 59 Dodge convertible. I need to drill out the hole in the door for the conduit grommet. Which got me wondering how big are the holes and for that matter, where is the location of the dimples/holes. Here's what I've come up with, courtesy of Wayne Graefen and Owen Grigg: The door hole is either 1 7/16 or 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The dimple is located 1 3/4 inches above the lower hinge opening. The A-post hole is located 1 1/2 inches below the bottom edge of the fender-to-body L-bracket and is 1 inch in diameter. The pictures below are from Owen's original, unrestored 57 Chrysler 300C.

Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13051 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | I did this installation on a '60 Chrysler, but I don't know the dimensions for '57-'59 - a thought could be that you phone Gary Goers, even if the metal is not included in his wire tube, I think he could inform you of the dimensions for the A-pillar hole and the door hole for the grommet. In the Gary Goers catalouge, see item number 35. Power window wire tube '57-'59 and item number 36. grommet in door hole for (35) See also my thread http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=19497&...

Expert ,, George Passed away July 28th 2021, He will be Missed Posts: 1295 Location: Twin Falls, Idaho | Ron.... I measured an original hole in one of my doors from the 57 300C convertible today. It measures 1.40 inches with a caliper. I imagine they were actually drilled 1.375 inches but with the normal wobble and lack of precision of a hole saw, it came out at 1.40 when completed. I drilled my replacement doors for my 300C coupe out with a hole saw and of course, it worked great. Rob Kern found a rubber grommet that has a flange on it that fits Gary Goers tubing very well and can be bonded to each end of the tube making it a very easy installation in both the door and the A-pillar. I have the specs on that grommet somewhere in my emails and will look for it and get back to you asap. George

Expert Posts: 1443 Location: Oconomowoc Wi | Great thread... As silly as it sounds, this is the kind of solid information that makes FL so valuable to me. I for one would love to see Ron post his progress and install ( If he'd be willing to do so ) as he continues on his Power Window retrofit for the 59. I must say that I've found Svens (Wizzard) tutorials on Power Windows and upholstery most useful and a true resource. What do you say Ron ?

Expert Posts: 4042 Location: Connecticut | Hey Bart - 'Retrofit' isn't really the correct term, since I'm using all original equipment. I first installed the power window setup in this car around 1995. Everything works as it should. I'm currently swapping out the door, since the sheet metal repair I did years ago on the current door turned out to be unsatisfactory. All the holes are already in the door for the p/w setup. So it's a simple job to bolt up the regulator and run the harness.

Expert Posts: 4042 Location: Connecticut | Yesterday I purchased a 1 3/8" Lenox bimetallic hole saw ($24 including the arbor. Yikes!) since there was no 1 7/16" available. I drilled the hole in the door and filed the edges smooth. Then I tried out the OEM grommet. It absolutely fit like a glove. Yeah ! When I asked about the cheapie $5 hole saws available at Home Depot, he said that they are designed for wood or composite and not metal. So they wouldn't even work for 20ga. stamped steel, which is what our doors are made from.
