Just like prior years, I'm going for a Road Trip again.
Flying into Los Angeles CA February 12th and leaving from Houston TX March 2nd. This time I’ll be taking a different route, From the Californian West coast we’ll be travelling to the Texas Gulf coast. We’ll be staying a few days in Corpus Christi TX before we’ll leave for home again.

The first week or so we’ll be spending in Monterey CA, Los Angeles CA, San Diego CA, Bishop CA, Las Vegas NV and Flagstaff AZ.
After that, plans/route as for now are roughly through the southern states. Roughly, because any deviations are still possible.

If there are any interesting salvage/wreckage yards or any automotive swap meet/car shows along the way that you know of, I would surely like to know too!
I want to visit as much as possible, and just like prior years make a photo inventory on the Internet, for us all to see.
While I'm there, I might even 'take your orders' to return the favor.

This time I'm traveling with my 12 year old daughter and it will be her first time in the US. Her interests are science and nature, so we’ll be visiting some National Parks and Museums.
So, any touristic tips are very welcome too!

How long are you planning to be in the United States?

I ask because the Lone Star Roundup is coming up April 17-19, a MUST SEE if you're still in the country at that time!! http://www.lonestarroundup.com/

If your daughter loves nature, I highly recommend you spend some extra time in Arizona. The Grand Canyon and Painted Desert are incredible. Be sure to see the Petrified Forest! Nothing like it anywhere in the world.

I did seriously consider that (shipping one of my D500s), when planning the trip to Tulsa, way back when...

But not now, this time it's a rental. Might even not be a Mopar...

57burb,

Wow! That Lone Star Roundup is just like what I meant. Too bad I'll be gone by then. We're leaving from Houston TX March 1st.

Grand Canyon is on our list, of course, one might say. Didn't think about the Petrified Forrest though. Thaks!

I live in Yorba Linda, about 10 km form Disneyland. Also close to Knotts Berry Farm. We would be very glad to meet You and Your Daughter. We can go cruising along the Coast in the 59 Convertible. I should also be able to get you an invite to Aivar's place , so you can see his collection of FL's. You can call me anywhere in
the US toll Free. I will send you a PM with my address and toll free number. You and your daughter are welcome to stay at our place while you are here.

Jim, I hope you have a great time and make memories that will last a lifetime. The United States is a stunning place, especially in the desert southwest. It can get hot, but won't be bad the time of year you are going.

When you see the Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest, make a point to see the Meteor Crater! You can't miss it on I-40: http://www.meteorcrater.com/index.php

Also, stop in Holbrook and stay at the Wigwam Motel, the last functioning one in the US: http://www.galerie-kokopelli.com/wigwam/ (Notice that the Wigwam Motel T-Shirt has a '56 300B on it!!!)

Houston is the ugliest place in America! Don't waste your time trying to find anything interesting there. I would say the same of most large Texas cities, with one notable exception - Austin is incredible.

The southeastern Untited States can be scary in places. The Gulf Coast is beautiful once you get east of the Mississippi River delta.

You and your daughter will have a great time!

Gary,

That would be GREAT!

We do have Disneyland on our program, but I didn't know about Knotts Berry Farm, yet.

Cruising in a 1959 convertible along the coast? That would be creating an unforgetable memory for both my daughter and I!

Here is some info on Knotts Berry Farm-----if I had to choose one or the other I would choose Knotts---but your daughter would enjoy both.
I will also take you to see Börje's collection and especially his 59 CRL D500 Convertible.

Yeah, she wants to do both! Of course... I think we'll go for Disney, but then again, you never can tell.

Börje's collection? Don't make it any more tempting now, or else I might cancel the rest of our trip... No, really, I do appreciate this very much.

Hey, want a free rental car from CA to Vegas? I have a 2002 Alero at Big M's in Cali that I would love to get closer to me here! Vegas would be a possibility... and there would be no charge whatsoever if you wanted to do it!

Jim,

If possible try to see the Arches National Park in the southeast corner of Utah. Spectacular! If you want to drive on Rt 66 as much as possible on your trip, PM me. I have maps for following it as much as it can be followed now. I do recommend the Wigwam, however it is best to make reservations ahead of time. Another great "Nostalgia" place is Tucumcari, New Mexico. It is off of Highway 40. We stayed at the Blue Swallow Motel. If you want to see pictures of the Arches, Wigwam, and Blue Swallow look up "John and M'Lisa's Excellent adventure" .

If you do come up to get Mike's car, you have a place to stay. Our place is always open.

Don't forget to visit the roadside Cabazon dinosaurs on I-10 before you get into Palm Springs.

Both Dinny and Mr. Rex can be briefly seen in the background of the Tears for Fears video for "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", as well as in the motion pictures Pee-wee's Big Adventure and The Wizard.

This hot rod lives about 5 miles from my house in Illinois. Not much tourist attactions to see, but she can ride in a tractor with wheels large enough she can stand in the hubs. I know of several private car collections in the area.

M'Lisa,

Thank you very much for your tips. And your travel log on the forum here is really very nice and a big help too. I might even do that too, right here.
The Wigwam motel seems like a nice place to stay overnight.
As of now, We'll probably also be travelling Utah and Colorado.
Trying to pre-program my GPS device with all this info and calculate our routes. I bought and downloaded the MAD Maps from Garmin, which are really nice, but I will probably also need the real (paper) maps to get a good view of possibilities/combinations.

As you might have seen in my prior reply to Mike, Sadly, I am not able to get his car from the Big M, since I'm very likely not going there and have already made a reservation and paid for a rental.

I guess in a way it's an Ed-Roth / Daryl Starbird knock-off or tribute, it's a custom car based on scrap pieces from a '59 Plymouth and '64 Chevrolet truck hood. It's made from steel, unlike any of Roth's cars (mostly fiberglass, with a couple of cars using plaster - and picture frames!).

It's called the Atomic Punk. He built a roadster before that one called the Lunar Lander built from '59 Oldsmobile quarters, but it wasn't a bubbletop, it was a roadster. He also has a truck, can't remember its name, but it has '59 Buick quarters made into a bed. I'm starting to see a trend here. Keep your '59 cars away from this guy!

Here's his site. http://www.groterodshop.com/

You're right, it isn't really cheap, coming over and doing a road trip. But it's all worthwhile, building my daughters (sweet) memories.

And talking about spending: any ideas where I can do so? LOL!

So, any touristic tips are very welcome too!

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is right in my back door, Jim...

Also, there are some nifty tourist attractions here.
- Dollywood Theme Park (Partly owned by Singer Dolly Parton)
- Forbidden Caverns & Tuckaleechee Caverns both nice natural limestone caves to tour.
- And don't forget "Memory Lane"... The 50's-themed town in a guy's backyard. It's just around the corner, too.

For reference on where I'm located, do a Google Search for the following towns... That will give you a better idea of what there is to see and do around here:

Sevierville, Tennessee
Pigeon Forge, Tennessee
Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Townsend, Tennessee
Knoxville, Tennessee
Asheville, North Carolina

If you're planning to be in this area, let me know and I'll see if we can make arrangements to host you for a few days.

Nathan,

Thank you very much for your tips and your generous hospitality.
We would very much like to come over for a visit but regretfully, Nashville TN is too far off from our final destination Corpus Christi TX (via Houston TX).

I’ve read all about Nashville in M’Lisa’s threat John and M'Lisa's Excellent adventure and am very impressed.

And anyway, Nashville has always be a very tempting town to visit, due to all the historical music things there. We’re huge C&W, Bluegrass, R&R and Rockabilly fans and definitely will visit Nashville someday! It’s through this music that our interest in 50s cars grew.

The best part about a US (or CAN) road trip is the ability to travel for DAYS, at highway speed, in basically a straight line,
and never have to exchange monetary currencies (ok; Euros, now) or go thru border crossings or worry about a too-strange
dialect in every state/province that you pass through ( excluding Texas, and Newfoundland, of course).

And, the exchange rate may still be generally favorable, for most tourists, here (excluding Canada).

Yesterday we arrived in Las Vegas, after visiting Neil and his loverly wife Norma.
We've had a great hike up in the Eastern Sierra and a great diner too.
Too bad your car's temporarely disabled now, Neil!
We've had pretty good weather, but after leaving we've had a lot of snow on the passes.
Death Valley was blessed with rain too. And we drove into Las Vegas through some heavy rain.
But now it's dry.
Tomorrow we're going to Grand Canyon via Hoover Dam. And then Monument Valley.
From there? Don't know yet. Depends on the weather...

I bought Horace when I was 30 years old, 10/80.

In less than two years, I will have owned him for as many years as I was when I bought him.

Wish people could be as easily "refreshed " as cars n I do have a question though Neil, why after all this time, no daul rear antennas?

Great pics - thanks! Lookig forward to seeing the trip!

"no dual antennas" maybe he just doesn't like 'em . Some prefer the clean look, including moi! To my eyes, the Forward Look body design doesn't need embellishment.

i guess because dual rear antennas are useless and ugly. they clutter up the clean forwardlook lines.

Single-fender antenna is definitely more serious and business like.

Dual antennae are more effeminate; maybe that's why I picked up on naming the car Horace (Dodge), and not
Henrietta....

He came OEM with that antenna; I consider it to be a natural part of him, like with his all-clear glass.

Oh, well, I reported elsewhere, that I, ahem, burned-off his trannie's clutch discs' lining material from
driving him somewhat energetically often, and regularly.

I think that I had also, a couple years ago, mentioned that I had trashed one.... (and didn't do the other one any-good,
but, it survived).... of the 1963-type front wheel spindles that support the 11x3" Bendix brakes on him, too, from
too-energetic cornering activities, around here, as well.

An application of "Trans-X" (GOOD stuff) apparently kept his (liquid-cooled, btw) trannie on life-support, for about a month.

So, now, after I spend $2K+ on a complete O/H, I think he's gonna be relegated to senior citizen activity, what with the
macho 2.76:1 rear end gearset installed in him.

BTW(ii): that 2.76-guy is more than partly at fault for the trannie's demise, as that gearset ENCOURAGES
( I say!) energetic operation of the car, as the car, seemingly--the ENGINE, anyway---enjoys being
driven at relatively high speeds in 1st and 2nd gears.

The transmission, however, begged to differ....

sorry to hear about your misfortune with the tranny. We were discussing it today at Aivar's place. Warne mentioned that there is a presssure that has to be set pretty critically in these cast iron tranny or else they don,t last--hopefully that was done.
If you do rebuild it add a shift kit to it (Moderate one), the tranny will shift faster (Yes a bit harder too) but you wont be burning the bands up as they slip very little---if any.
The tranny in my 64 was rebuilt 25 or more years ago and I had a shift kit added. That tranny has got a "Workout" over that 25 years, 1st and snd gear rubber, lotta "Manual Shifting"----I hold in low until the RPM's are quite high, and even behind a 426 and now a 413 it still works as good as it did 25 years ago cept for a small leak ---probably where shift cable goes into the tranny. The car has a 323 Rear end.
Likewise on my 59 I added a shiftkit when I had it rebuilt, and I have a 276 rear in that, but again I do a lotta manual shifting, (Maybe I got a thing about RPM's? Anyway, no probs with this tranny after rebuild, cept for ocassional "converter leakdown" over nite-----so I doubt the 276 rear end hurt the car or running around in 2nd gear.
I don't claim to be a tranny expert, I'm only relaying my own experiences with my 2 cars (the 59 is a 1962 727TF)
I used to race that 57 Desoto that I had put a 413 and cast iron TF in from a 59 Chrysler , It had somewhere around a 276 rear, as I recall, and again I had "Button Itis" even as a kid, yet I never had any tranny problems with that one either.
So maybe I'm just lucky 3 outta 3 aint bad---but knock on wood, no Tranny problems.
The 59 Tranny started leaking live a sieve, was told Torque converter and front pump were the cause the tranny still worked well---at least till it got low on fluid---but I decided as long as they replace pump and Torque Converter might as well rebuild the whole thing and add shift kit.
Hopefully our Tranny experts will chime in here, and hopefully be able to add something that might save you a bit on the rebuilt or at
least get a few more years out of the rebuilt Tranny

Wow !

And here I try so hard to be tactful when discussing design elements that might not be my bag.

I guess we just let 'er rip and see where the cards fall, eh ?

Now, let me get this straight, ... comparatively speaking ..... something so fine and hard to see like an antenna clutters up a cars "lines", but fender skirts, which have the presence of covering an entire wheel well sculpting (and which I know you think should be mandatory equipment) do not ?

Methinks thou might protesteth too much ?????

Thanks, Gary, but that trannie had been smiled upon by way of John Veatch's HD governor weight and
regulator spring, and had its line shift pressure adjusted, and the trannie had (allegedly, and apparently)
been rebuilt (by Aivar's former associate Rich E.) to the proper D500/300 specs, with the extra clutch disc,
so that it DID have nice firm/hard shifts between gears.

I told the shop that I wanted to have them be sure to get the "300" internals, but, this time, instead of my getting
another "earless"(-water cooled) T/Q, which, also, had had its stall speed be modified-increased (which also tends to
increase the operational temperatures) , that I would settle for an air-cooled (which has the external cooling ears on it)
stock rated T/Q, for even-more cooling effect.

I told the shop that I did not want to have them install an external (visible) transmission cooler on the car.
The OEM-style.... (actually: retrofitted, from some other CHRY; Dodges & Ply's only have air-cooled transmissions in them).... trans cooler is installed in the radiator's bottom tank.

The stock-spec "air-cooled" (external cooling-ears) T/Q, in conjunction with the 300-spec liquid-cooled trannie, set up for firm-shifting,
along with safe-and-sane driving behavior (nurtz) should mean that the new transmission should enjoy at least another 10 years of
operational life----which is what I think I'd gotten out of Rich E.'s trannie-work; haven't checked to see when that liquid-cooled
trannie was set up & installed by him.

How many miles in the ten years, Neil ?

I have had so very little transmission trouble over the years. Granted, I tend to drive my cars on the "soft" side (with only occasional foot stomping outbursts).

Ten years of even daily driving seems nothing for a specially built T/F.

I dunno, really, but 6/07 saw a 6-day 3400 mile road trip to a certain town in the lower Midwest.

It's not so much the mileage, but how the car was operated (joyfully, lets say).

Until one day, a month+ ago, when the car all-of-a-sudden didn't want to go into its forward gears, after resting
for a week, the trannie had exhibited NO evidence of having been exhausted.

Trans-X seemed to solve the issue of no initial gear engagement, until a week or so later: no FWD gears, at alls-ville!

Got it towed to the shop (for the standard cost of a 16-pack of Silver Bullets) ; dropped the pan,
and Wholly-Sheet (or lining-material, Batman!)

The actual cause has not been determined, as the trannie is still intact pending the arrival
of the ordered O/H parts.

There is a LARGE cog-looking piece, at the front, which may have failed---the one that Rich E. had
managed to get had been jury-welded together, and it IS possible that that guy may have
failed, altho there was very little (none, obvious) metal debris to be seen, lying inside the trannie pan.

It's ok, not everyone has to like them, I personally have always had the opinion that the front fender mount is anything but clean.
