Too bad the motor is missing...., really wonder what it might have been!

Maybe the Data/Trim Plate will tell us?

1957 Dodge Coronet D500 Missouri State Patrol

eBay text:

For sale at NO RESERVE is a 1957 Dodge coronet 2 door sedan Missouri STATE PATROL chase  car. Its blue and white  and you can see where the light assembly was on the top. Plus where emblems were on the doors. The car is missing the motor and trans. But the drive shaft and generator are inside the car. Also the rear axel is missing. I do have another rear axel from another 57 dodge and i will put it under this car so it will roll onto a trailer. The leaf springs are still under this car, so wont be that hard to temporarily bolt one in.  There are taillights assembly and front turn signal lenses on back seat, See pics. The floors  in trunk and inside of car are normal for these years. And will need replacing. The car will have a good title.  I bought it without one, But will get one and the car will be sold with a title. It has the D500 emblem on trunk. This was a HEMI state patrol chase car.  Please ask if you want more pics. I have a bunch. Also please ask any questions. This car needs a good home. Its rough, but restorable. My cell is  402-750-5859. THANKS  Bob

Rough and tough! Starting bid looks about right to me. Looks to have a '57 Plymouth steering wheel and a couple of '58 Plymouth parking lights - those might be worth something

WOW-OH-WOWEEE: this car was a Super D500.

The car is merely coded for a T/Flite, and Truck delivery, and it's a Coro 2-dr sedan, but, this puppy was a real
2 4-bbl car (no wonder its engine was liberated).

No special 'police' coding is supplied on any 57 P/T plate.

It's a "Super(ahem)" long-shot, but, I'll ask the seller to try to find the B-Sheet.

That 'PLY'-style steering wheel WAS standard cop-issue equipment.

Oh, man!

This is just a photo from my 1957 file, at the office; I'll go get the Dodge Reporter at home and post the entire
photo caption, soon.

I wonder which car 'this' auction-one might be?

'This' car looks to have had a now-removed 'bubble-gum' on its roof, but these cars were (delivered, anyway) without
the roof lights on them.

The Dodge Police Car brochure does NOT mention the OEM availability of 'Bubble-Gums' , however.

Like I suspected, this could have been a Super D-500. And this one has a clear D/T Plate, wonder what we could learn from it... If it doesn't 'say' D-500, maybe we now could know what's the Super D-500 P/T Plate code?

Here's what it looked like new, and the specs: Flyer, 1957 Persuit Cars.

"the 310hp. Super D-500 with dual 4-barrel carburetors . . . the most powerful engine on any police car in the nation.." WOW!

The specs for this engine are at the bottom of page 2.

And here's the Missouri State Highway Patrol Ad.

Pretty neat, so many Doggies! And as the ad says: In all, over 400 of these Swept-Wing "speedsters". WOW! again...

Just sent Clive some Dodge Reporter photo-articles to post here.

Apparently, there was an initial 400-car order, which was followed by another one, for 112 units.

The first article states that the "400" cars might have (all?) been the 285HP D500's, which implies that they ('all')
would have had the single-4 Hemi engine installed.

This Super D500 auction car has a 18 March Scheduled build date, so it may well have been sold as part of the second order of the Pursuits.

As this car is a Super-D, it stands to reason that the SECOND batch (112) may well have ALL been Super D500's, with the dual 4-bbl carburetion (in order to apprehend all those REAL speeders, out there).

Also note that, as apparently originally-delivered/received, the pursuits did not have the roof mounted
"emergency beacons" installed, but, that, at some later date, they WERE installed (just as this-car
had had one be installed onto it; but, which was later, post-service, removed from it).

A close viewing of the Dodge Reporter photos shows clearly that there were no passenger-side (and, probably?) no
driver's side spot lights/ruby-spots installed on them, but, that at least 1 or more of them had
had combination sirens/emergency-beacons installed on their roof(s).

This auction-car looks to have had the elongated 'combo' unit installed on its roof, which makes sense, for
aerodynamic high-speed pursuit activity.

Although the roof light was retrofitted, apparently the MHP didn't care to install spotlight(s), and,
somewhat surprisingly, Dodge didn't advertise that spotlights were either OEM, or dealer-installed,
availabilities.

Of course, Dodge didn't advertise the availability of under hood sirens ("growlers"), either.

As per Jim's advertisement, above; at first glance, the wheels/tires might look to be 15"ers,
but, the wheels have 1957-style dog-dishes, so, the wheels have to be 14"ers, because the
1956 Dodge was the last model to have 15" wheels, and their dog-dish hub caps look very
different from the 1957 (14") doggies....

Finally, note that the door 'bugs' were apparently installed behind(??) the door moldings , unless
the bugs were split in half, on either side of the moldings.

CA, prior to 1959, had done the same thing with their door 'bugs' .

What's the proof of it being a Super D-500 for sure?
Is it on the P/T Plate? The VIN?
Up until now I thought there was no proof whatsoever...

The "first" of the second batch of cars appears to be a two-door hardtop -- look at the windshield/vent window. If this is indicative of all 112 cars, then this car is not one of them.

Notice in the last photo, above, that the car on the left has the large single-headlight, and, of course, no central
grillework, so that it clearly is a 1957 Coronet model, equipped with an aerodynamic combination siren/emergency light
system.

Thanks, Clive!

Good-eye, Harris!

Unfortunately, whether any or all of the second "112" were sedans and hardtops (or, even-all were Super D500's)
is not known.

Some of the first "400" may well have been hardtops, too, and, there may have been some
few station wagons ordered as well.

400 + 112 = a LOTTA cars! I wonder if the Head Honcho got a convertible?

AND; I just noticed something interesting: in the D.R. photo, above, referencing the additional order of 112 Pursuits,
the two cars in the photo are both 1958 (hardtop) models !

What that means is that SOME of the "400" 1957 Pursuits were, indeed, dual 4-barrel carbureted Super D500 models.

And, that at least some (maybe all, but I doubt it) of the 112 1958 Pursuits were hardtop models.

Just had a nice conversation with the car's seller.

He said that's he's receiving "a lot" of emails on the car, including one guy, in SoCal, who says that he wants to make a COUCH out of the car, and to have the seller cut-off the quarter panels from it.

I told the seller that the car, IMHO, in Nebraska, ought to be worth over $4,000.00, but, it IS for sale to the highest bidder.

This car, and ANOTHER identical one, had been located in a MO wrecking yard, but, the other one was a real muliti-piece basket case, and that one is long-gone, now.

Both cars had had their engines pulled a long time ago; whereabouts, now, unknown.

This car had been stored on top of a "van", so that it had been relatively protected from Misery ( I mean: Missouri).

The car has no spotlight weld-ups on it.

I asked the seller to confirm the existence of a sway bar (which appears to be 'on' the car, now, but which was not
available on production-run Coronets, or Royals, but which WAS available on cop cars).

If it did have the roof combination siren/light, then it would not have had an under-hood growler.

He's going to check out the Broadcast Sheet and Certified Speedometer status, in the near future, but, as he travels,
he has difficulty getting to the car, in the daylight.

This is too-much to ask of the seller, but, I'll bet that this car has the OPTIONAL Coronet torsion bars, which were used on taxis, and the D501 race car; those bars 956/957, are now, VERY rare pieces.

It probably has the optional 6-leaf rear springs, too.

I've invited the seller to go look at this thread.

I want to buy your 57 NY'er, and rescue its proper OEM restoration, from YOU--lololol....

Seriously, though; this car will need $15K- $20K, at retail-cost, to restore it fully, and correctly,
after it is purchased (maybe more).

If I already didn't have my own car, and wasn't facing economic survival, for the next couple years, I would be
interested in getting this car, as the purchase price will not be very great.

Just like, for buying a horse, the cheapest part of its ownership will be its PURCHASE price!!!

And, it's no fun, merely to push-around, a car; it's best to be able to drive it, for several years, as you go about
periodically, and systematically restoring it.

OK.. Here are a Bunch of PIC,s from NEIL which the Owner sent him with Descriptions....

The seller send me a bunch of detailed photos, and this one shows wehere
the DOOR-mounted
spotlight (ruby, or clear??) was mounted.

I'll bet that the spotlight also had a built-in rear view mirror on it,
but, it's long gone, now.

No Broadcast Sheet was found inside the car; darn.

No spotlight installed on the passenger's side door.
I meant to say, above, that there probably was NOT a rear view mirror
attached to the driver's side door, as there already IS
a r/view mirror installed on the door.

I probably should already know this, but WHAT is this vacuum can

It has manual brakes.

No spotlight installed on the passenger's side door.
I meant to say, above, that there probably was NOT a rear view mirror
attached to the driver's side door, as there already IS
a r/view mirror installed on the door.

Clive---

Picture 174 looks like a windshield washer fluid container. My '54 Dodge had one just like it mounted on the driver's side of the firewall. It was operated with the same foot control under the dash that my '56 and '57 Dodges have with the 'Jiffy Jet' bag set up. When I first started on the job in New York in the late '60's a few '57 Dodge squads (police cruisers) were still in use. I saw a few of them but never saw a glass container like that in the engine compartments. They all had JiffyJet bags. Maybe Missouri had them installed because of their greater capacity for holding fluid. Our shop people would routinely 'customize' squads to make them faster or more comfortable (try driving them in full equipment including sidearm), or add visual enhancements, etc.

One note of interest---I ran across a '57 Dodge in an Upstate New York State Police barracks (headquarters) garage around 1968. It was a dual quad hemi, black 2-dr sedan, 3-on-the-tree, with the small center lug nut covers, which made the car look very intimidating. It did not have the D500 emblem or the exhaust extensions. Most of those hemi squads I did see had the D500 emblem, and a few of them did have the exhaust extensions.---Fred

This car has been trashed. It is common to find all sorts of goofy junk in a car like this ..... Ford stuff, GM stuff .... toys, clothing .....

No telling how that washer fluid jar got tossed loose in the car, but without it being installed, I would not assume it ever was. Could have easily been tossed into it by the guy pulling parts off the 52 DeSoto parked next to it in 1971.

I think that Fred's correct; that container probably was a windshield washer fluid container.

Fred, the 7/60 issue of CARS magazine has a fabulous article on the 1960 Dodge CHP Pursuits,
and they (some/most/all?) did not have the D500 emblems installed.

Those emblems were nice advertising, but not exactly essential for police duty.

Current Crown Vickies have small "Police Interceptor" badges on their rear ends.

Just sent Clive an interesting photo, of a 1958 MHP 4-dr sedan, but which shows great
restoration detail for this car.

The 1958 sedan looks to have one, and/but probably two, parcel shelf emergency lights/flashers
installed on it.

And, the fins are no longer white (which was a 1957 paint-scheme feature).

From NEIL............

This car is FAR from having been 'trashed' !

It has had its engine/trannie removed, bit it's intact and relatively
complete.

BTW, here is the Motherload of restoration photos, as it shows the
aerodynamic combination
growler/light (that I suspected was installed on this car), the door
mounted spotlight (looks to be a ruby,
based upon standard practice, and the glimpse of the edge of its lens),
and MHP rear view mirror (still on the car)
and the fact that the door 'bug' was installed underneath the door side
molding.

The car is a 1958 model, however.

This publicity photo was almost certainly taken at the same time as the other PR photo, as as seen on page 1
of this thread, at the Springfield State Capitol building.

I think Neil was mildly joking about the 'Springfield State Capitol' quip. We all know Jefferson City was and is the Missouri State Capitol. Marc.

Hopefully, the car will get a careful and accurate restoration.

The cheapest part of the entire project will be the car's purchase price.

I've had my eye on this one as I'm completely enamored with it's history. I just keep adding up everything in my head to get it done and turn on talk radio for a dose of reality.

Jeez this economy sucks.

Neil,

Deep breath, Amigo. It's gonna be alright.

When I said this car has been "trashed", what I meant was that is has fallen to the lowest rung of the not-being-cared-for ladder, .... just sort of picked for parts and left in a field with some other cars of similar disposition.

How that windshield washer jar got in the trunk is anyone's guess, but given its current status, I would submit this car has seen a succession of owners who used it as a beater / dumpster before relegating it to the "back forty".

You and I both see the potential in this car and if I weren't holding a full hand already and more interested in 57 Dodges, I would not hesitate to dig into a car like this.

In a similar find some years ago, a friend stumbled onto a 72 GTO that had just been dragged into a wrecking yard. It was a 455 HO 4-speed stripper with really low numbers on the ticker. All was in super shape but the two front fenders than had been squeezed through a narrow door .... and the engine and trans was gone.

He bought the car for a wrecking yard car price and then hunted down the previous owner that led him to the guy now sitting on the drivetrain. He paid FAR more for the missing parts than the whole car, but it was a simple bolt-in affair to have it back to 100% and with some new fenders and paint to match, it looked like a really nice one-year-old used car ! It was one of 2-3 built with the 455 and a stick. A nice ending for a car that seemed headed straight for oblivion.

This cop car will take " a little more work", but will be so much more car when done. What a great opportunity !

I threw in a couple bids against my better judgement, but was quickly outbid. Sorry if it was a member here that I bid against, but I just had to. This car is too cool to just ignore.

Don't feel bad, I threw out the first bid, but my mesley 525, and later 550 was quickly outdone. I have to admit, I'm glad it was, I have no idea what I would have done with more stuff I don't really need.

Mainly problem for me was its location... Otherwise it would've been worth more.

Yeah - I know... But I'm missing a 2DR sedan from my collection

In the meantime I've collected quite a lot of FL parts etc. so I thought I could maybe save this one for the future and finish it when I find an old 325 Hemi and a TF. Black is not a bad color for a police car, eh? I had a vision of driving on the Autobahn and stopping speeders!

For sure the buyer is either from this forum or someone how has some previous experience of these cars (and has an excellent taste!). Actually I first thought the winner is JH from Netherlands (noticed his questions to the seller).

Did I ever show you the photos of the 1958(sorry) Coronet Club Coupe with about 6K original miles on it;
car looks like it's about 6 months old.

Dunno where it may be, but, it has a red/black interior, and oh yeah: body is all-black, too. Stripper/6-cylinder
model.

I have no problem having a 58 Dodge, its so easy to "update" the front-end to perfect 57 look No, I never saw that car - but I can imagine how beautiful it is in black, mmmm....... If you have any photos, please send them!

To be honest, would be nice to own one 6-cylinder model! Throw in a manual and I'm hooked! The funny thing is, that even if I have the 2DR HT and Sierra, mostly everyone tells their favourite is my 4 door! Therefore, for me as well - body type doesn't matter, neither the options - but it has to be original (regardless of condition) and... well.. yes... black. I'm more the man in the shadow than the star of the show - unless its a porn movie...

Somehow all those unpopular models "talk to me", if I know the vehicle was owned by old couple - not rich people, but people who once a week went shopping with it and took great care of their priced possession, I feel privileged to own such vehicle and give it a good home.
