Location: North Australia | Today I took my 1960 Imperial Crown Southampton 2 door hard top for a roadworthy inspection and registered (licenced) it for the first time in the southern Hemisphere (North Australia). Car runs and looks great. What a relief, 3 years of my spare time spent well! Steve

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | Got home from 3 weeks back east yesterday. Wanted to Drive the Matador but it was blocked by the PT Cruiser. So went to move the Cruiser and the battery was dead. Nearly new battery but I guess all the electronics stuff is too much drain for 3 weeks. So got out the battery charger and fast charged it for ten minutes and started it up and moved it out of the way. Hopped in the Matador and after cranking a while to get fuel to the carb it fired right up. And off we went to the grocery. When leaving there two different guys stopped me in the parking lot to complement the car and chat briefly about it. People, at least the men, love these old FLs.

This is an "Automatic" 1958 Plymouth radio that I found in a warehouse. After sitting on a shelf for at least 45 years, it's still working fine. With the RediRad device plugged in, it's great! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0k18etOu00&feature=youtu.be

Elite Veteran Posts: 1049 Location: Auckland, New Zealand. | Spent the weekend nailing down some brake problems. I had issues with the grease caps falling off into the wheelcover, the front bearings constantly needing adjustment, uneven braking and a bad brake shudder. Turned out the grease cap problem was from having bought some incorrect size grease caps off Ebay. Correct sized replacements supplied by FWDLK member Rolland. Front right brake drum that I replaced 2 weeks ago had a bad out of round condition, replaced it with a good spare I had. Brake shoes showed evidence of bad glazing, replaced with some nice new shoes off Ebay (US$20 set). Cleaned out everything. New Timken made in USA wheel bearings and shells (Ebay, US$9.99 each). New seals. Brakes adjusted up evenly. Looks as good as the day I restored them 5 years ago. Now brakes in a straight line with no movement of the steering wheel, with both hands off the wheel at 30mph. No shudder. Awesome. Glenn. The cast metal panels have been sand blasted, sanded, primed, sanded and painted. All chrome has been redone. I'm using a 150 mph speedo from a '56 300 with my original Imperial gauge face cover. Everything turned out great. Edited by jboymechanic 2013-09-24 11:06 PM

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | Took the Matador to my dental appointment. Closest spot to the door was open so I started to pull in and had to wait for a couple of woman who were exiting their car - Mother and Daughter - Mother was slow and frail, probably in her 70's or 80's. They saw the car and loved it. Mother talked about how one of her favorites was a 41 something or other, the matador's fins, etc. They were going to the same dentist. People inside saw me drive up and the receptionist wanted to know what it was, talked about it a bit then she pulled up some photos on her computer of her parents cars, a pair of 55/56 Chevy station wagons. Someone else in the waiting room joined in the discussion of old cars. Then the Dentist showed up and turned out he has a 69 Camaro "daily driver" (but not that day) with a 600hp 461 in it plus a 63 corvette. He took a look at the Matador when I was leaving. People just love these finned beauties.

Location: Parts Unknown | It has only taken me three months of slowly organizing the mess I stuffed in the shop when I emptied out 3 storage units upon getting my deployment orders, but yesterday I finally was able to drive the Coronet convertible out of the shop and take the DeSoto rear clip I will use for repair panels from it's spot leaning up against the front wall, back to the work area in the rear to be dissected into pieces I can then hang from the ceiling (with all the fenders and such) or use to begin putting the DeSoto back together. Next, I will gather the tools to remove the undercoating and a wad of 1/4 bits to drill out the spot welds to break it up. Sounds like a good winter project.

Location: Parts Unknown | From November to February we can expect temps below freezing and typically get 3-4 weeks of sub-zero. Snow can range from light dustings throughout that time to the 8 and 10 feet we got in 2008 and 2009 ! I took Arne Nilsson's advice about why Swedes restore these cars ... What better way to spend the long winters that holed up in a nice shop ? Hope to have that "nice" part finished by NEXT winter. Looks like I'll have to rough it this go-round. Oh well. I COULD be back in AFG freezing my ass off !

Location: North Australia | This is my first post on this thread, I have been hanging around here for about ten years now. Tonight I borrowed a mates timing light and adjusted the timing on my 60 Imperial Crown Southampton 2 door. Took the car for a spin afterwards and it is running awesome. This car is even better than what I imagined it to be. (I did a LOT of dreaming!). Every person who comes for a ride is IMPressed! This car rides and handles so good I am amazed every time I get behind the wheel. I give it WOT in second gear out on the open road (and backed off at 85 MPH). It changed to third and was just gliding along at 90. I also did a gamon emergency stop. I think the brakes are due for an adjustment! Kinda felt like I was running out of stopping power near the end. Pedal was not on the floor, but close. This is my first and only experience in a FL Chrysler car, so I am still getting to know its limits. Done about 600 miles so far. What a fantastic car. Steve.

Location: North Australia | Knocked off early, drove the Imperial into town to the pub, the boys were having a pre- Christmas drink. Had a light or 2, laughed at the drunken bums (mates, been there since before lunch!) for a while, watched the stripper, then took my good Mate home 30 miles away. Watched the odo clock over to 2000 miles on the way home, on it's second time around! I also had a short race off the lights on the way in, with a dude in a hot Tojo 4X4. The Old Girl went alright! one back wheel give a nice long chirp going into second. I had a grin you couldn't knock off with a cricket bat! So did the dude in the Toyota! I am Bloody idiot, I know! BTW The Imp has a 2:93 third member, the truck would be running 4:10, and I kept level up to 70mph when I backed off. Jon, please do not hold back on the photo's of your 56. I have been watching for these! Steve. Edited by 60 Imp 2013-11-15 6:29 AM

Location: North Australia | Took the Imp for another tour through town. Cruised the waterfront and the wharves, looking at the boats e.t.c. Topped up the tank, 146 miles and 12 (US) gallons, since the last fill. 12.2 M/G. Car running real good. Plan to take it out on the open road when this cyclone goes past. How's this, the Mirrormatic decided to work tonight. freaked me out! Set up the de-humidifier in the car tonight humidity very high, due to tropical rain and storms all around. Steve. Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Rosy, are you going to run the exhaust pipes through the bumper, like Ex-intended? The secret to preserving the exhaust extensions is to paint/coat their interiors liberally with high-heat 'aluminum' paint (to resemble 'chrome'---but those surfaces will not stay shiny, for very long), and to make sure that there are weep-holes at the point where the pipes turn upwards, towards the bumper, and, always, to try to get your engine fully warmed up each time you start it; no short trips on cold days... When in doubt about whether I've got the engine's oil (and the mufflers) warmed up, I touch the end of my car's exhaust pipes, and if they are (very-) hot, I figure that the engine system is fully warmed up. ...Looks like your car, too, is suffering from the Heartbreak of LDS (Limp Deck Syndrome). Expert Posts: 2788 Location: USA - KY | Thanks for all of the nice comments, guys! It's so hard to see my BABY looking like that! But at least progress is being made. My car is undergoing mostly cosmetic work, but I'm eventually going to be adding PB's, PS, dual master cylinder system, and hopefully AC (modern) to the "To Do List". Wish I could say that that is my shop. I have only a really OLD, 20' X 10' garage that has a cracked, concrete floor, and no electricity. So the work is being done at a super clean and comfy shop that I found just down the road from where I work. Super nice bunch of guys that run the shop too, which makes everything way easier. They really like my car too, which also helps. Neil - although I REALLY like the look of those jet contrails on a cold morning, I'm going to leave the exhaust tips where they are, under the car. I know, I'm no fun. But I'm spending a small fortune on new reproduction rear light lenses, as well as having my rear light towers re-chromed, so I guess I'm worried about the potential for damage due to the heat/grime that might come from the pods if I were to re-route the exhaust back through the bumper. It sure is an interesting set-up though, now that I've had the chance to look at the exhaust pods from the inside out. And don't ya just love my fancy trunk lid support? Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Well, as the weather (but not the ambient temperature) was nice, today, got Out-And-Under (see attachment, for song and movie reference) Horrie, and adjusted his Bendix brakes. But not before he reminded me that 20/50 motor oil is not conducive to cold temperature (27F) starting. Bendix brakes stop really well (MT recorded 142 ft, from 60 MPH, in a 4,400 lb 300J on 7.60x15" bias plys), but they do require more-frequent adjustments than do the OEM Lockheed brakes.
