Location: The Mile High City | I tell you, I really don't know which I would choose! You can either have the full Spring Special from the factory or you can have that so very complete white one with the exhaust deflectors. Tough choice! Those deflectors are almost worth their weight in gold.

Location: Parts Unknown | I don't like the chunky trim on the Spring Specials .... you take that one, I'll do the white one. We can have matching DeSotos and Dodges !

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Neat documentary-car, as it has an obvious S.-S. color (Paris Rose?) , it's a Royal, and it does NOT have all of the S.-S. trim on it ('missing' the end-of-fin caps and the license plate escutcheon). And, it's a "Saddle Trim" painted S.-S.--where the second color includes the entire middle-area of the car. The car should have the unique S.-S. upholstery colors, too, if it was OEM built as a S.-S. model. ...just went to the auction site; YUP, it's got the S.-S. interior colors! Wow.... AND, I don't suppose, Mike, that you've noticed that this car happens to have PAINTED headlight doors, on it (?).......... Edited by d500neil 2009-04-05 8:26 PM

Location: The Mile High City | My guess, Neil, is that we are viewing the "Poppy Red" variant of the spring colors. Paris Rose Metallic would have faded to a silvery type of hue - this vaguely salmon tone was once a bright red/orange. Odd that it is not equipped with the eschutcheon and the caps! Nevertheless, this appears to be a factory spring special. This is a very good reference car. The painted headlight doors may indicate an early version of the spring special - perhaps before the shipment of eschutcheons and caps arrived??? With spring specials, anything goes. Doc, I kind of prefer the white one too! The starting bid prices on these were very low, but reserves were not met. I think either one would be a good deal at $5,000...better if you could get them for less.

Location: The Mile High City | $3,716 with one day left and there appears to be no reserve price! We have a live one here...I hope someone on the site picks it up. If the auction ended right now, I would say this looks like a very good deal.

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Mike, not all S.-S.'s GOT the Full Monty options; THAT'S why this car, with the painted H/L doors, is such an important find/reference-model. Gotta love original condition cars! BTW, I infinitely prefer the look of this S.-S. car, with its equipment/style, to the plain vanilla car. Edited by d500neil 2009-04-06 10:17 PM

Location: Parts Unknown | We had this SS discussion before. My SS Coronet 2HT had the side trim, escutcheon, and end caps, but I did not know the difference on the headlight doors and cannot remember what they looked like, if different. The interior had seat covers and the entire car had been submerged in a flood just before I got it, requiring a total gut-out to remove all the silt and water. I think I just tossed the seats because I had nice ones on hand, but can't really remember after all these years. What I clearly remember was that fat side trim and the escutcheon and end caps, all of which I thought were "heavy" and contrary to the light and perky design of the 58 Dodge. Had I not reduced my "fleet" to the one DeSoto, I would have built the car back with the 57 side trim and "lost" the other SS parts.

Too bad, you woulda done a great job, restoring it! It would have been breath-takingly beautiful, with its matching-interior colors.....and shiny chromework. ...MIKE: (Clive/anyone!!!!:) can y'all post-up all of this car's photos, here, for posterity???? Once the auction is removed, we lose all of the car's detail images, forever!!!! Edited by d500neil 2009-04-08 9:45 PM

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | And, the only time(s) that I've ever seen a car's interior suffer, as the result of installing clear plastic seat covers, is when/where the plastic material has 'failed', exposing the OEM material to the elements (as may have happened with this car's rear upper seat area). Whatta car. Edited by d500neil 2009-04-09 5:20 PM

Location: The Mile High City | I think that trim dip under the lancer emblems makes all the difference on the spring specials. The standard Coronet trim did not work as well together. I agree Neil, the more I look at this car the better it gets. The reason I like the white one better is that I see fewer areas that need attention on the white car and it is more in a ready to go state. I do prefer a bit of color spashed on these cars, as the spring special shows off so well.

Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Whew! Were there any 1958 DeSoto "spring Specials" made? Going back, at least to 1955, and well-earlier, probably, Chrysler Corp had various 'Spring Specials' models made. You know what? I DO have a 1958 Chrysler S.-S. ad, at home---it's that all-Turquoise Windsor model, IIRC, but DeSotos...? There were no 58 Firesweep S.-S.'s that I'm aware of. Why NOT?
Doctor DeSoto |

Location: Parts Unknown | Yes, DeSoto DID have a Spring Special trim package. Besides a half dozen new paint colors, interior fabrics were revised and exterior trim queues were offered. The most notable exterior trim pieces were aluminum sweep inserts (like 58 Belvedere) and short vertically mounted stainless bars on each side of the license plate shadow box. All of these could be had on any model except Adventurer, and like the 58 Dodges, not all package components showed up on every SS car.

It would show up as normal fair for 59, so it is not very unique like the other special parts. I have never understood why so few S/S trimmed DeSotos were produced. Many more got the special S/S paint colors without the trim than those that got the trim. My OEM "Haze Blue Metallic" was a S/S color, but it got none of the special trim. Just for FYI purposes, it was built 06 Jan 58.
