Location: The Centennial State | I have used Denver Bumper Works for quite a while - as I am sure many of us in this region have. Right now, I am experiencing the first problem I have ever had with them. I gave them a pair of exhaust tips that need to be rechomed. The tips have two parts: the outer chrome shell and the inner stainless flapper. They had redone another set of tips a long time ago and they chromed the stainless flappers. So, I sent them the old tips and both sets of flappers and told them to rechrome the tips, take the chrome off one set of flappers and then polish all of the flappers. "no problem, should be ready in a couple of weeks" Six weeks later, I come in to get the stuff and the tips are fine - all four sets of flappers are chromed, but the chromed the underside of the set that was previously chromed and the top side looked horrible. They are trying to fix it, but they have worn through the metal of one of the flappers and things don't look too good. At least they are trying to make things right....

Location: The Centennial State | I sent that DeSoto pathfinder hood ornament to Paul's Chrome in Pennsylvania and they wanted three arms and six legs to rechome that piece. Ajax on Broadway no longer does pot metal. I thought I might try to send it someplace close to home this time, so I'll get ahold of Tony and figure out which one to try...

I've wanted to replace it for years. Right now my focus is just getting Delores back on the road. My next poiint of attack is the Tiller. What was your Steering Wheel Project?
Lancer Mike |
| ||
Location: The Centennial State | Hi, Robert. I found a guy in Arizona who repairs steering wheels for around $200 and I sent my De Soto wheel down there. He did an ok job. It took quite a while longer than he said and a few bucks more (it is never quicker and less expensive). A couple of years later and a few hairline cracks have come back, but it is still much better than it was. Let me know if you want the guy's name and number. I guess the guy that did Ray's body and paint work does steering wheels too.

I dropped off my Convertible Visors off at Midtown Upholstery based on Mike's recommendation. They should be done in a week week and half. Price will be around $50 a visor. PM me for details about my dealings with this company. http://www.platingspecialties.com/ Here's an update on Plating Specialties: about 2 weeks ago I prepared a package to send to Dave, but I called him first as I always do and got bad news. They had a fire in the shop a while back so Dave had to shut down operations, but he told me that he's been sending his work to Salt lake Chrome. http://saltlakechrome.com.c25.sitepreviewer.com/preview/index.html I sent my package to SLC with 3 pot metal pieces: a vent window frame for a 1957 Fury, and 2 large console parts for my 1965 Sport Fury. they called back with a quote and a time estimate. I should have a update and pics by the end of January. Edited by Tony 2012-12-29 6:56 PM

I just picked up some stainless trim from Jose. $150 for two five-foot long pieces. One of them was squashed flat in one place - the other had a good ol' big ding in it. He did a great job and completed the work in a timely manner! He's a little tough to find: if you are on West Evans, head south on Zuni until you reach College Avenue. Take a left (east) and he is on the south side of the block. Good guy. 5/6/13 update - I gave Jose my rear-wheel stone guards for the convertible on Monday morning. He had them done on Tuesday evening. His minimum charge is $60 and he priced these out at the minimum charge. I also showed Jose a 1951 De Soto hood ornament I bought that had a clear coating on it. He took off the clear coating gratis and it looks spectacular. The stone guards are beautiful now. Jose is the MAN!

Location: The Centennial State | check out this site, John: I didn't see any tail light bezels, but they have some good N.O.S. stuff for 1959 Plymouths. It always makes me more than a little nervous when they don't list prices! Man, I can't stand pot-metal replating! The cost is so high, it makes restoring our cars (in particular) such a fool's burden. I wonder if people are sending their pot-metal to China now? I am sure when you buy a chrome pot-metal piece for a Ford or Chevy, all of that stuff must come from China.

Location: The Centennial State | On Thursday, January 31 I gave Salt Lake Chrome the go-ahead to replate my rear license plate escutcheon (spring special). Kevin said he could have it done in two weeks. Half down now, half when it is done. About $315, including shipping, which I think is a lot less than Paul's Chrome would stick me for - still, that's nothing at which to sneeze! Pot metal plating is a tough deal. I guess the EPA has a heavy hand in the whole affair.

Location: The Centennial State | My license plate escutcheon arrived today, albeit with one less pin in back than when it was shipped out. The quality looks pretty good to me - at least much better than the one I had rechromed for the D-500. Here are some images. They repaired a dent in the upper left side and the quality before was a little bubbly with a few pits. The rechrome is very slightly wavy to the outside edges - but definitely something I can put on the convertible. I liked how quickly they turned around the piece. Location: The Centennial State | Radio Repair
I recently purchased a signal seeker for the De Soto (from James Van Buuren "the Adventurer" in Austrailia - thank you James). I just dropped it off with Steve. $60 to clean it and do a diagnostic. I will report on the progress. It looks like Deluxe Speedometer moved to Kalamath Street and focuses on speedometers and cables now.

Location: The Centennial State | Steve called up this week and said it will be another $150 to get the radio running. In for a penny, in for a pound I guess.... Steve has been very communicative. He said he cannot get the signal seeking function to work properly. He seems like he has devoted quite a bit of time to the project. $210 to get it running seems a little steep - but this is work I don't know anything about. I could just be cheap though!

Location: The Centennial State | Steve called today and said he has the radio working properly. He cleaned it all out and replaced a bunch of capacitors and vacuum tubes. He said the signal seeking function is working, but he is not very confident in its reliability. Total bill is $204 ($60 + $144). I will pick it up on Saturday and should be able to install it right away. So far so good, if you need to get your radio repaired, I think I would recommend Steve's service. I tell you this much: when you pop the lid on these radios, the internal components are pretty intimidating! I even bought the radio schematics on eBay and wouldn't know where to begin.
