I first saw this car at a swap meet a couple of weeks ago. Mike, the owner just purchased this car a month prior. She's a slightly modified Plaza 2 door sedan. The flat 6 has been replaced with a healthy 413 backed by a 700R4 trans an 9" rear end. Front discs brakes are installed and there's a hidden switch for a line lock. Obviously the previous owner had some 1/4 mile plans for this one. I got a ride and she pulled strong! The car is super straight and originally from Georgia. She'd look great in my garage next to my Dodge!

Elite Veteran Posts: 726 Location: Some Island called Prince Edward | Oops! I knew that was a 58 that was my typo. I never noticed the wings missing! I did roll down the side glass and thought that it was custom cut as it had a curve to match the window frame. The rear glass must be custom cut as well..

Location: Parts Unknown | I know I'm talking out my ass here - I have more projects than brains already - but I would really get a kick out of doing a 58 Plaza 4S in the absolute bottom of the line trim-out. Mint green monotone, body color wheels and dog dishies with blackwalls, clear glass and manual everything. Wouldn't that look stunning next to the Glam-barge DeSoto ? ! I really like the el cheapo models.

I'd like to see the interior of that car too. The whole thing reminds me of the hot rods I seen pics of from back in the early 60's. My dad was into it and I got to see pics of some of his cars from back then. They should have used a car like that in that movie Sometimes They Come Back instead of the 55 C$#y they used. Looks much more intimidating. I actually like the 2 dr post cars too. This car makes me like them even more. Ripper Edited by ripperace 2009-11-22 8:26 PM

Elite Veteran Posts: 726 Location: Some Island called Prince Edward | The interior is done in simple black vinyl. The front seats are early style buckets (A100?). A B&M shifter sits between them. The car must have been a stick as there is no sign of it having the pushbuttons and the pedals from an auto must have been swapped out. I emailed Mike (the owner) the link to this thread. Todd

Todd I notice the stick also, no pushbuttons, so the car was probably a 3 speed on the column with the flathead 6. Typical Savoy and Plaza setup. The floor shift and Big Block must be fun in that car.

Member Posts: 8 | Hey Guys! As the owner of the 58 Plymouth Plaza I just wanted to thank you for all your helpfull information and positive feedback. You'll have to thank Todd for posting all the really great pictures. I'd feel a little guilty taking any credit for the car; someone did all the hard work for me and I just bought it that way at Moparfest this past year in New Hamburg, Ontario. Maybe next year I can get some action shots for you at Sparta Ontario when the 1/4 mile strip opens! Theirs a 39 second clip of the car on Youtube before I bought it; just search 1958 Plymouth Plaza. Location: The Mile High City | Welcome aboard, Mike - You have an awesome car! Although this may be a business coupe, because the wing window was removed, I suspect it may be the standard club sedan. Do the door windows roll down? I imagine the back windows are fixed in place. The car looks fantastic in all black with those little pillars removed. I suspect you may see a few copycats in the coming years.

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | I may be wrong about this, but I think that the Business Coupes had rear windows which popped out, slightly like the 2-dr station wagons did. This car has had major work be done to the fitment of its side glass---wonder why 'they' didn't shave (-off) the door handles?

Is their anything else anyone would want to see photograghed on the car in more detail? Thanks Pete. Love those flames; they probably intimidate the other drivers. Veteran Posts: 195 Location: New Philadelphia, Ohio | Yes! Definately interior shots! That's what's so cool about this car. Even though it isn't all "flash and balls" like the higher end models, it STILL deserves the looks because it's just so TOUGH looking, and simplified, if you will. I love it! I also love the bigger meats under it. Give the wheel wells a more "filled out" look, yet they didn't have to tub the car to get it done. Truly a great looking car. As I mentioned before, it looks like someone "Hot Rodded" it in the 60's, which makes it that much cooler IMO. Great Car! Ripper

The Chanster is correcto about shaving of trim, and plastic seat covers, as they both were done back in the Olde Skool classrooms.... Edited by d500neil 2009-12-02 8:14 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 6203 Location: Big pimpin' | I will admit, shaving door handles AND plastic Seat covers IMO, has to be the stupidest thing you could do to a car.... It is like walking into someones living room and seeing all the furniture covered in those yellowing, nasty, hot, clear plastic covers... And shaving door handles? Well, It might have been done long ago, but that don't mean it's correct..There was stupid sh*t being done to cars in the fifties as well as today... Edited by dukeboy 2009-12-03 7:47 AM

Location: Parts Unknown | This is a good example of how it is nice to see something DIFFERENT. Forgive my rants about making "Christines" out of every one of them, but this is what I am talking about .... after the 17 of the last 20 58 Plymouths you see is painted red and white, this one with no side sweep and added glitz is really striking. No slam really intended on the red and white cars other than to prod people into thinking a little more "outside the box". After too much of a good thing, it becomes something of a cliche. Personally, I'd be walking over and looking at this one and ignoring a whole line of stock Furys and Christines .... those are too predictable. This one is more interesting.

Installing plastic seat covers, to keep dumb-asses from destroying your car's interior, is one of the SMARTEST things to do, to protect your investment in your car.

Doctor DeSoto |

Location: Parts Unknown | I think I would have to go "thumbs down" on the seat cover idea. I can understand the logic of keeping the interior fresh, but covering them in plastic is on par with trailer queen logic and makes them yucky in the interim. I guess the question I would ask myself is: What am I saving them for ? .... to take the covers off at some later date and enjoy them then ? Why not just redo the seats after enjoying them for however long it takes to make them ratty again ? Plastic seat covers do have a certain tacky "ambiance" .... so much 50's stuff was charmingly tacky, but I am going to have to fall on the side of just enjoying that investment. Afterall, I am investing my time and money on something I enjoy .... not something I am sealing up in a tomb for my kids to sell.
