Elite Veteran Posts: 774 Location: Atlanta GA USA | Not my car or auction. The seller, timg936, states the car "is a RARE AND UNMOLESTED original california black plate classic car." The mileage is listed as 44,500. I'm just wondering if it was common for DeSoto upholstery to wear out that fast, for the heater to become inoperable, for the engine to become red instead of silver. The carburetor doesn't look correct, the heat pipe to the carb seems to be cut off. I wonder what's under that dash pad. "the radio and heater and clock do not work". I don't see a clock. Seller states "i don't think anybody's ever touched this car" but then says While I think this is a very nice car, I think the odometer may be wrong. Anyone have comments? http://tiny.cc/hwmEA or: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TWO-DOOR-HARDTOP-SPORTSMAN-FIREFLITE...

Location: Parts Unknown | Looks like a desert car to me .... fine dust in the crevices caused rust like that. I found the later DeSoto engines to be problematic with overheating and cracked waterjackets. Talk with others led to speculation that the design had been overbored and they were prone to thermal problems. More than a fair share I encountered has needed major engine work early in life with more than a few having the engine rebuilt or replaced. This could be an example of that ? It may very well have 144K on it too ! Bottom line ? Shell Pink and white 2HT Fireflite with that luscious interior AND a Hi-Fi ! Hard to beat THAT ! This is a pinnacle Forward Look car in my eyes and worth a huge premium over many of the more commonly seen models and colors.

Elite Veteran Posts: 636 | I don't see anything that would scare me away. All the "problem" areas are what I would expect to see on a 53 year old car. What's under the dash pad? IMO, a metal dash. As a starting point for a restoration, even "while you drive" I don't think you will do any better. This is a great car. Just my $0.02 Sparky

Elite Veteran Posts: 774 Location: Atlanta GA USA | Thanks, all. The red engine really scared me. I'm not familiar with desert operating conditions so a lot has been explained. There's a place near here that does classic upholstery. Bannisters. Their web page even mentions DeSotos. This car could well be beyond my budget, but we'll see. Tomorrow, I'm driving 100 miles to Tunnel Hill GA to look at a '56 with 56,000 on it. I can't wait.

Location: Under the X in Texas | I don't think there is anything needed but a very simple explanation on this car. Note I have NOTHING to do with ownership or sale of this car - just commenting. The "red engine": Look carefully and what do you see that is red? Intake manif, heads and valve covers. Almost certainly the car had a valve job and whoever did it hot tanked those parts and had the decency to put some paint back on them and he had red on the shelf. There wouldn' have been any silver left after tanking. He didn't know. The dash pad: Its a padded dash that was in the CA sun and heat. The foam went bad and the vinyl shrunk and there you have the totally classic result of wrinkled vinyl. Same old same old. The paint and a few rust chips showing. So the car got driven 44K OR 144K it really makes not a lot of difference in CA. What you see is what you get fifty years later. I STILL see a darn original car and I'd much rather be looking at THAT than something with a coat of recent paint hiding those years and miles. Upholstery: Absolutely whether the mileage is 44K or 144K the car is STILL fifty years old and you BET the upholstery cloth is gone by now. Part of the reason is the foam underneath got hard and went away a decades ago in the CA sun and heat. Once the foam died the cloth got stretched and pulled to shreds on the front seat lower. You guys look at far too many restored cars. This looks like a rare SURVIVOR to me and an IDEAL candidate for restoration. The seller lacks knowledge of what to say about this car; about as lacking as the buyers are that are considering it. This is the type of car y'all should be seeking out and paying good money to get instead of fixing someone else's screwed over restoration of a rust bucket.

Expert Posts: 2996 Location: Sept. 1958 | My dad who lives in Spring, TX now, told me about this car and sent photos. I just never got around to post it on here. The guy bought it on eBay while looking for a 59 Pontiac, bought this car, then a 59 Pontiac came along. Nice car.

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | The one major thing to check out is the condition of the brake fluid, and whether the master cylinder is leaking any fluid from its orifices when the brake pedal is applied. Once the M/C and the brake fluid condition are 'cleared', a serious test drive can be made, with the brakes' stopping ability confirmed. Then (probably) , a brake fluid change may still be in order, and/or an overhaul of the M/C, too. Once the M/C gets cleaned-out and orifice-bushed, it will be good 'forever', as long as the car gets to be driven fairly regularly. After the brakes' operation is resolved, the rest of the car's mechanical items can be addressed.
