As far as I'm concerned, the auction is full of deception and misinformation. And the guy that eventually buys the car will repeat the lies when it's his turn to sell the car, to justify the high price that he paid for it.

well, it is nice to think I could have had that much for the car, but like Ron said - I don't think I would have described the car in exactly the same way. With my own description of the car - I don't think it would have generated that high of a bid! I set the price at what I thought the car was actually worth. It may be worth a little bit more now, but not that much.

Joe also threw in a 2 x 4 setup that we never saw pictures of - I have seen rough ones go for $1500 on eBay. If that was complete with linkage, date-correct AFB's, fuel lines, and correct oval air cleaners - that is worth something all by itself. If it was all complete and in excellent condition ready to run - it might be worth as much as $3,500 all by itself!

58 Ray told me about the melt-down at Memory Lane a few months ago. They were the last known owners of the Canyon Gold Belvedere. Does anyone know what happened there and, in particular, what may have happened to this car? Ray told me that the owners skipped to Mexico and ruined several cars before they went. I hope this one did not get destroyed!

If it is still there, maybe the Federal Government will auction it off at some point?

I couldn't see any gold paint, but it would be a shame if that Belvedere was dismantled or destroyed. It wasn't a prize peach, but it was a very good car for a driver.

Good Heavens! I don't see many identifying features, but Goldie's front fenders were considerably more swiss cheesey than the front fender piled into the shell of that car. I do see the gold in that photo! Let's hope that is not what became of her!

Those Verdungs sound like they are rotten to the core.

This whole situation is sickening. From the looks of the piecemeal, a few restorable old Plymouths (as well as other cars) may be lost forever.

A couple of the holes I see on the firewall on this body look to be for the OEM windshield washer setup, but your car did not have that option. So I would say the body we see here is from a different car.

Good eyes, Matt! Let's hope Clive is correct. Even though the schmucks at Memory Lane did not describe it very well, it was still a really great car. I would still consider it to be somewhat of a "survivor". From what I know, it had never been re-painted. The interior was very good and mostly original. At sometime, the original engine had been repainted. Most of all, it was fun to drive.

Hi there Mike, I have been meaning to contact you for some time, but my twin brother and I did rescue your former Canyon Gold Belvdere. We luckily had it shipped to Los Angeles where we live. So, for the record, she is safe and will be well taken care of. I just can't believe after all the horrible stories about MLC we actually got it at all. They actually had the rust fixed on the front fenders by our request and some of the rust fixed under the passenger door. We still do have some rust work to have fixed behind the door. After the bidding ended on E-Bay, I called up Edwin and offered to trade a 2002 BMW M3 for the Belvedere. My brother and I inherited the BMW from our uncle, nice car, but not our style. The BMW only had about 50,000 miles on it and was in great shape. Edwin was very interested, came to L.A. and drove the car back to N.Minnesota and rest is history. The M3 was worth about 22,000. We put 5,000 on top of the transaction, which I thought was too much, but we wanted the car bad! And now I am glad we went through with it! Edwin, the crook, does owe us a few thousand bucks for some work we had done on the M3 that he said he would pay for, but I think we won in the long run, so many other people have way worse situations with MLC compared to us. We got the car!! So, that's the story of the Canyon Gold Belvedere. By the way, we will keep it the original color. I have wanted a Belvedere since the age of 16yrs old, and now my dream has been completed at the age of 33yrs old. Sincerely, Wyatt L. p.s. The car did not come with the original steering wheel, Edwin the jerk probably kept it!! If you would like to contact me my e-mail is, wclriviera@yahoo.com I will be posting pics of the car when I can. I'm kind of new at posting pics.

Welcome here, Plymouth Twins!

Really glad this car could be saved and that it's in good hands. This Bevedere, in this colour, is really a stunning vehicle!

By the way, if you ever want to replace the very rare trunk handle that your Belvedere originally had, I might be able to find a couple of them at a local junkyard I'm going to visit next Saturday. There's at least two there and if their condition is decent and I can remove them, I will.

Great news, Jed and Wyatt! That is a happy outcome for my old car. It is a great car and I hope you are very happy with it. I am certainly glad it lived through MLC! I can't wait to see some pictures. I will send you an e-mail and I am happy to tell you all I can remember about it.

You should take David up on his offer. I never knew positively that the two holes in the trunk were for a lift, but I suspect they may have been. I thought if I could just get a lift handle, it may just slide right in. Unfortunately, they are rare as hen's teeth in the U.S.A. and common as ketchup (or catsup) in Canada!

Cheers!
Mike

Hello there 1959 Dodge Mayfair! Thanks for the welcome. Wow, I never knew about the trunk handle option. I always wondered what the holes were from. However, there are I think four holes on the hood also, I thought maybe from a bug guard in the past. Would they have put handles on the front also? I think it would ruin the look of the hood. But, yes if you could find any I am interested. I just don't know if I would like the look of it on the trunk, but maybe. Just let me know how much. Thanks for the suggestion. Take care, Wyatt p.s. I do absolutely love the Canyon Gold with the iceburg White top. The colors just scream the "1950's"!

Thanks Mike, I had a feeling you would be happy to know that your car is in one piece. I will post some pics soon and I do have a few questions for you. Anyway, I'm glad to give you a peace of mind about the Belvedere. Quick question, do you know what the holes on the hood are from? I thought maybe a bug guard. Talk with ya later. Wyatt L. p.s. We couldn't be happier about finding this car! It truely is a dream come true!! It feels like Christmas every day I open that garage door to look at it

Well I'm just back from the junkyard and I found only one trunk handle. The other one I spotted last year was the better one and it was gone today.

The one I picked up is very heavily pitted, so I'm not even sure it can be rechromed and reused. If you still want it, send me a PM. If you don't want it, let me know too, as someone else has already shown interest in it too.

I really think the two holes on the trunk of your car are for this handle, as they are at the correct location and they are correctly spaced. The holes on the hood, I don't know what they were for, but it definitely wasn't for a handle of this type.

The first pic is one of a canadian 58 Belvedere with the handle on the trunk so you have an idea of what it looks like. The other pics are the part I picked up today.

Wyatt, I always figured those holes in the front were from a bug guard, but there was no guard there when I bought the car in 2001. It is a shame that someone drilled those holes in the hood, but I suppose at one time 1958 Plymouths were just "old cars" and a few drilled holes didn't matter too much.

David, thank you for the pictures! Did the trunk lift have pins that stuck out or screws that went in? As far as I know, the trunk lifts were really rare on U.S. cars, but seemed to be almost standard on exports. Wyatt, I am sorry I never requested a build sheet on your car - that would be fun to see.

Wyatt, when I sold the car to Johnny Caldwell it came with extra fenders, extra birds, the original steering wheel / horn ring, neat hub caps, another bumper and various stuff like that. I guess you have my records, but what else came with the car? Did you get the dual quad set-up that MLC proported to be "original" to the car?

Thanks Big M! Me too, those Verdungs are some bad people. I just didn't have a good feeling about the guy. I actually had him in my home at the dining table and served him my families famous recipe of sloppy joes! We call them Hot Sloppys. I even picked him up at LAX airport. He told me later that the BMW M3 I sold him was crashed when he slipped on some ice, and then the FBI told me that they found my former car with the engine, transmission, and other parts gone. It was just sitting there in the shop all pulled apart, how sad! It was a beautiful car. Anyway, I have the Belvedere to focus on now and it was a happy ending. Take care, Wyatt

Hey there Mike, we did not get the dual quad set up that was promised with the car. However, we did get your records. But, we got none of the parts you mentioned earlier that were with the car when you sold it to Joe Caldwell. I'm sure the crooks at MLC kept all those parts for other cars. It sure would be nice if we could get that steering wheel back, but again, at least we got the car with some rust work fixed. By the way, what are extra birds? and do you know if the hup caps on the car are original to the car? Oh, the brake lights don't work when I hit the brake pedal? Was that a problem you had? I'm sure it's an easy fix though. We did however get the interior light to work, it just needed a new bulb. I love the a.m. radio. We get a great oldies station in L.A. that comes out of Beverly Hills, 1260 A.M. I suggest you bring in the station on your computer, they play great music!! We have even caught a few of the songs from the movie Christine, a little errie in a good way. Anyway, thanks again for all the info, I'm sure I will have more questions for you. Later, Wyatt

That handle can be restored by a competent plater. I suggest Verne's in Gardena CA, considering you are in LA. Congrats on the '58 Belvedere, count me as another that is glad to see it intact!

David, thank you for the pictures! Did the trunk lift have pins that stuck out or screws that went in? As far as I know, the trunk lifts were really rare on U.S. cars, but seemed to be almost standard on exports.

They are installed with screws that go in, and yes, they were standard in Canada. I'll try and find some more of these next time I'm in junk yard around here.

Hey there again Soiouz! I think I am interested in the handle after the suggestion of 57burb to have it restored in Gardena C.A. He says that a competent plater could restore it. So, how much did you get it for? Just let me know, thanks. Wyatt

Scrolling down, and Danny 'beat' me to this, but SURE...that handle is nasty, but because it does not have any intricate
detail on it, a competent chroming facility (do NOT price-shop any pot metal re-chroming work, ever---look only
for quality work references) can restore that guy, fairly easily.

I wonder if we have a "Vendors" thread on good (bad-) rechroming facilities?

Oops.. It's already sold to another member after you posted here that you didn't want it. Sorry!

But I'll try and locate another one in the coming weeks and I'll let you know first if I do find another. I know a couple places where they have '58 Plymouths and I bet these handles are still on the trunks.

Unless the subject car is located in the dry Desert SoWest, any 'outside' car is going to have blemishes (at best-) on
its OEM chromed potmetal.

....and as you can see from the pics I posted of the yard where I found this handle, it's very far from a dry Desert environement!
