Can someone post a pic of a Power Steering pump mounted on a '57 Dodge 325 block?  I came across a '57 PS pump and bracket off a '57 KD500 Hemi motor and am trying to see if it will bolt on my '56 Dodge 315 block w/ Hemi heads.  I always thought the 315 and 325 blocks were the same, so I'm wondering if the heads had a bolt boss on the front (on the Poly heads) or if the pump mounted to the water pump housing somehow.  I'm not going to run a generator and gen mounted PS pump.

Are the mounting points and water inlet/outlets the same on the '56 Dodge 315 block and the '57 325 block?

Thanks,

Jay

Hopefully Neil is OK with me posting pictures of his PS pump ... If not I'll remove it

Okay, looks like the adjusting bolt goes into the water pump housing just above the radiator hose outlet.  I can't see where the lower (pivot) bolt goes into.

Neil, where does this bottom bolt go?

Does anyone know if the '57 325ci waterpump housing will bolt onto a '56 315ci block?

Jay, I have a 56 315 poly and 57 325 hemi so I can always measure the water pump mounting holes to see if they are the same. Have you been to Idaho since the last time you were in my Garage?

Sorry, no, haven't been up your way since.  Lots of things going on for us and its been a rough couple years for our family.  I want to get up that way again, as soon as we can.  How's your project '56 coming along?  Have you done anything else to it since I was up your way?  Its going to be a nice one for sure!

Thanks, I'm wondering if this isn't going to be a pain, but I'm trying to come up with some way to have power steering without having to 1) buy all new front engine stuff from Hot Heads, about $700, and 2) use a stock generator/ps pump combo.  I thought the 315 and 325 block were the same except the 325 wa a bored out 315.  Of course, that doesn't mean they didn't drill out one or two new bolt bosses in the block.  The timing covers look like they bolt up the same, but when I bought these '57 pieces, I didn't get the water pump housing.  My thought was if the '57 PS pump bolts to the water pump housing, maybe I could bolt a '57 water pump housing to my '56 315 block.  Not sure how things would line up for the v-belts, but thought its an interesting idea.  If you could see if the '57 bolts up the same as the '56, that would be a big help.  My cross-reference book doesn't say anything about it, but its only a Hollander book anyway.

Say hi to the family for us. :-)

Hi Jay, the mounting bolt locations are exactly the same for both the 56 315 poly (right) and the 57 325 hemi. The "shape" of the pumps is different.

Is that your Hemi motor Robert?  If so, very cool man!  I assume its going in your '56?

Thanks Robert, but I'm still confused as to where the pivot bolt on the PS pump bracket goes. Any thoughts? I wonder if its the bolt (that looks unpainted) holding the water pump housing in your pic?  The PS pump I have has a long bolt for the pivot that seems to have clearance to bolt through and hold the water pump there.  Can you tell if the water pump pulley sticks out further or in on the '57 water pump vs. the '56? The lower crank the man gave me sticks out further towards the front than my '56 pulley seems to. Too bad, its a 3 groove pulley too, not common to find.  But, this might be the way to go, maybe I'll see if the guy stills has the water pump housing.

Other than the pulley line-up issues, this would seem to answer my questions.

Does anyone have an issue with running the PS pump pulley on the same belt as the a/c or alternator?  I'm going to run the alternator up top like the original generator and the a/c also up top on the passenger side.  Does anyone see a problem using a 2-belt set-up on this with a PS pump?

Thanks.

That's my Horrie, with his Jag XJ viscous fan clutch, and his mid-60's Hemi 7-blade fan, too!

Note the necessary notching/slotting-out of the enclosed-circle Jag mounting holes, to accept the insertion of the mounting studs.

The Jag is 2 1/2" deep, overall, and the fan-blades align evenly with the front-plane of its thermostat fins.

You can also see the plumbing line-connections, at/on the radiator's bottom tank, for the liquid cooled trannie, too.

The PS pump on a 1956 with 315 is bolted to and driven by the generator, which is mounted high on the driver's side of the engine. It is driven by two belts. I'll try to get some pic's of my 1956 that has 315 poly 4 barrel with power steering.
