Expert Posts: 2011 Location: Ballwin, Missouri | Where is the best place to buy a water pump for my '59 Coronet 325 V-8. I would prefer new. Does anyone know if there are new pumps still available or is a reman. my only choice? At least it started leaking in the garage and not out on the highway somewhere!!! I look at my father's '56 Windsor with a Firepower 354 in it as a prime example. Best way to tell if you have a 325 would be to look for the water manifold to the thermostat exiting from the front of the heads. That and an "open" intake with a seperate valley cover. If it doesn't have these two identifying characteristics, then it will bae a 326 PolyA engine. Edited by DeSotohead 2004-12-29 7:20 PM

Expert Posts: 2011 Location: Ballwin, Missouri | I just rechecked my "1959 Dodge Passenger Car Service Procedure Manual" and in the specification section they only list four engines. An in-line 6 cylinder, 230.2 cu. in., (engine Prefix DMP8 Red Ram) 325.0 cu. in. V-8, ( Super Red Ram Engine) 361 cu. in. V-8, and the D500 383 cu. in. engine. So I have to believe that my poly engine is the 325 cu. in. ( according to my manual ). My 1958 Service Manual lists three V-8 engines, ( one Red Ram Engine ) the 325 cu. in., ( two Super Red Ram engines ) a 350 cu. in. engine, and a 360 cu. in. -D500 engine. And the same 230 cu. in. 6 cylinder engine. Edited by RoyalGate 2004-12-29 7:42 PM

Expert Posts: 2011 Location: Ballwin, Missouri | Thanks Chuck, I checked out the RockAuto.com web site and they do show a water pump. I can't believe it's that cheap. Again, thanks.

Expert Posts: 2011 Location: Ballwin, Missouri | I just took the pump off the engine today. I cleaned the front of the engine off and there was a "DMP 8" stamped on the front of the block. According to my manual that should be a 325 cu.in. engine. I went to the local NAPA store and all they show for 1959 is the 326 engine. They got that pump out for me but it is the small round pump that goes on the big block engine. The casting numbers on my old pump are - 2402784 - but that doesn't usually mean anything to a parts store. Can anyone give me any more help to find the correct pump? Rockauto.com only shows a 236 for 1959 and there part number is the same number that NAPA came up with and I saw one of those and it's the wrong pump for my engine. Expert Posts: 2011 Location: Ballwin, Missouri | Chuck, I'm not familiar with "KANTER". Do the have a web site or do you have a number I can call for a catalog from them? That price sounds more like what I expected. The other pump was only around $20.00 and I thought that was a little to cheap. I'm off to work on my windows. They,re getting very hard to roll up and down. A little WD40 should help. Thanks, Larry

Board Moderator Posts: 3186 Location: The not-so-great, dirty-white North ( Michigan) | My parts book lists a 325 Water pump (S27 and LD2) as part number 1752210. Water pump body number is 1733997. Hope this helps. BTW..If you can, post a picture of your engine. Makes IDing stuff a lot easier.

Expert Posts: 2011 Location: Ballwin, Missouri | Chuck, I made a slight mistake on the casting number on the pump housing. When I took it to NAPA today and we looked at it again the number is 2402794 not 784. Also, I found the engine number, but it wasn't behind the water pump, it was on the left front of the engine block. It had DMP 8 and then a series of numbers which I didn't write down. I assumed those were just the engine number. At NAPA we found an exact picture of the water pump I had laying on their counter. The part number listing was for a "60 to '64 318. I knew that thing looked familiar. I've changed a few of those over the years. Anyway, I was going to post a thread and let everyone know what I found out at the NAPA store. These guys at the store I deal with are great and one even owns a FL car. They opened at least a half a dozen boxes to look at until we figured out what I needed. They only had it in reman. but that's ok with me. Be here Tuesday from their warehouse. I've got some pictures of the water pump and my engine that I will try and download and post tomorrow. HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!!!!

Board Moderator Posts: 3186 Location: The not-so-great, dirty-white North ( Michigan) | Larry.. The fact the engoine you say has a water pump that fits a '60-'64 318 indicates you have a 326 engine, NOT a 325. Basically the 326 was a Dodge version of the Plymouth 318 with an overbore to 3.94 (from 3.91) and a unique hydraulic lifter camshafte assembly. Still used the adjustible rocker arms, though. All in all, this engie is actually better from a parts replacement standpoint, as the bulk of any odft the 318 A-poly parts will interchange. Chuck...My book only goes to 58, so those part numbers quoted by Larry do not appear. As I stated earlier, though, I would not dispute that Mopar used some leftover 325s in 1959. Look at Canada where the 354 poly survived an extra year (and the A poly in 1967 in Canada). Could be a Canadian option, or maybe an Export?

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8948 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | LARRY------does your pump look like either of these------if so they are both of the A-POLY family------i have 4 of them here and all have a different after market number---------------later one word of caution before you go painting or attaching to the engine------the threads for the by-pass hose fitting on the pump that is on my engine now wasn't tapped far enough-would only turn in about one thread------by luck i could borrow a tap big enough to run in deeper and all is well------i did get that pump from ebay-maybe that is why it was one of those new old stock parts-it was a return------also if that fitting doesn't come out easily-don't force it-apply a little heat about 3/4 in. from the base of the fitting------propane works real good with a jet tip------or just simply get new ones---------------later Edited by 60 dart 2005-01-01 4:26 PM (HPIM0223.JPG) (HPIM0225.JPG) Attachments ---------------- HPIM0223.JPG (91KB - 152 downloads) HPIM0225.JPG (94KB - 159 downloads)

Expert Posts: 2011 Location: Ballwin, Missouri | Ok guys, here goes. I don't know if I can post more thanone picture per thread or not. I'll try that first and if it doesn't work i'll have to post one picutre in several threads. Chuck, those two pictures you posted look the same until I looked very closely and seen a difference in the ribbing on the left side of the pump in the pictures. Mine looks to be a match to the second picture with the pump that is painted blue. Expert Posts: 2011 Location: Ballwin, Missouri | HEY !!!!! I'M STARTING TO GET THE HANG OF THIS STUFF !!!!! I just checked. The manual I have is a thin '59 Service manual. It almost looks like a supplimental manual to the '58, to keep them from printing a whole new thick service manual for'59. On the back back cover is a number in the lower left hand corner, D16799. Here is the manual I have and a picture of the page where I got the DMP 8 from.
