has anyone put one into an earlier or later custom project?
what if all u have is the astrodome and not the under-dash rheostat or whatever the control box is for the lighting?
is there some other way to get it lighted?

No, you need the oscillator or power pack, 220-300 Vac! The rheostat in the lightswitch is like any other one, for dimming the lights only...
I've seen quite a few in custom cars, also seperately mounted in the center unit. I recently sold one to a Swiss member for his custom Caddy....

Jeff Intwert in Canada sells brand new perfect repro oscillators for around $125...My advice is to stay away from the SS power packs you see all over Ebay, I tested 2 of those, 1 didn't work at all, the other put out a very scary 544 Vac!

Erik,

I talked to the guy selling the power units on ebay and he says the output is 200V. He has a lot of positive feedback and repeat buyers so I'm not sure how yours was so far out of specs??

Erik is right on this one - the SS power pack can fry your EL lamps. I'd only recommend old renovated ones or the ones Jeff Intwert makes.

Yeah, I dealt with him too, twice...he still owes me money for shipping the bloody thing back to him!

Wizard first warned me about these things having a sketchy output.
Non-believer me, I asked seller in advance about the exact power output of these units, he wouldn't tell me. I explained I can't buy things if I don't know what I'll get...
He sent one to pay for when I liked it, it didn't work at all, zero output! He didn't want it back so I sent it to Wizard for an in depth investigation so he can tell you all about the guts of these things...
He sent me another one, output see pic below....I reluctantly hooked the thing to some old spare EL lamps and it made them squeal like a pig!

I sent him this pic and the same story as well, he said he wanted to test himself and promised to refund my shipping costs, word of honour....
He insisted on me shipping with tracking #, so idiot that I am, I paid $15 extra on top of the shipping costs for this tosser!
Still waiting for $$ of course...

Btw, 200Vac is what any old tired oscillator will put out, in fact they do better...Factory specs for our lamps to work properly are 220-300Vac.
A nice used one puts out around 280Vac, so these Ebay things definitely WON'T liven up the tired old dash like a christmas tree as he claims!
Unless you get one of these that make your lamps squeal of course, then you're in luck...
