Hi all,

Here's some pics of my '59 Dodge Coronet sedan.

It's only a plain 4 door sedan , nothing fancy like some other rides here but I love it none-the-less.

Plain is good!

Do you have any plans for her, or just enjoy as is?

That's a cool gas station photo, it looks like the old Mobilgas stations around here long ago.

Thanks SP, Kenny, tto, Mike for the comments

It's what I call a " 20 foot car " that is , looks good from 20 foot , but it has many imperfections as you'd expect find in cars of these ages.It is pretty straight with the exception of the bent fin on the drivers side, you can see the hit in one of the rear shots. It's pushed the fin inwards about an inch or so. The trunk lid closes still but has a good size gap on that side 'cos of the bent fin.I've gotta work out how to push it back out and re-straighten the kinks and dents from the hit.

The flat black hides the rust very well in the shots, it has outer rocker rust, dogleg rust, lower quarter rust and trunk floor is rusted out. Floors have rust but can be saved with small patch sections that I'll make up.

It looks like the kind of car that has been really looked after well in it's first 30 years or so and then neglected somewhat for the remainder.

The pics actually show it's condition better than it is in reality.

I picked it up from a good mates place in Ballarat in Victoria Aust and drove it on a permit about 800 miles to home. I know it was a risk driving an unseen car but I thought since it was a daily driver in Van Nuys CA up until it's import, then it " should " ?? still be a driveable car ?????.

Only problem on the whole trip was a blown left front tire ( you can see the black spare wheel in the shots ) and of course I never packed the spare in the trunk but had it packed in the trailer of our 2nd car underneath a heap of car parts I bought on our trip.

Took 1.5 hours to change the wheel and get going again.

We did get a lot of exhaust gas sucked back in through the non sealing trunk lid so it was windows down all the way home.It was early winter here at the time, day driving was fine but night was chilly with windows down, thankfully the heater works fine ( actually works VERY WELL !! )

Even though it was a daily driver in CA, it needs a LOT or work to comply with on road registration in our state here with it's very strict vehicle compliance rules, they are mostly safety oriented ( which I have no problem with ) but some are just plain stupid.

So,

For me, it's a fixer to the point of rust repairs, straighten rear fin, new front windscreen ( new one came with car ), complete new interior and a few other needed repairs and then it's a drive and enjoy type of car for me.

I'm not really wanting a show quality car, and a huge mortgage, increasing bills and teenage mouths to feed puts the hobby costs into 2nd priority so I don;t have wads of cash to throw at it anyhow.

Hope you like the shots, I'll put up some pics of my old daily driver 1960 Holden and some of my other cars in the "Nether Region " of the forum in coming days.

Cheers,

Terry.

Oh, one more thing,

The gas station photo was taken just outside Ballarat only a few miles from where I picked up the car from.

I was still crapping my daks ( Aussie saying for " excreting in my pants " ) at this time trying to learn how to drive an undriven ( by me ) LHD car on our RHD oriented Australian roads as previously I had only very briefly driven a LHD ex WW2 Jeep , LHD A model Ford and a LHD ex WW2 Studebaker 6 x6 truck on quiet country roads for a few miles.

It took me a good hour or so to get somewhat used to the Dodge and it's driving style.

My son took the gas station ( we call 'em " Petrol " stations here in OZ ) shots on his mobile photo so the resolution ain't that good.

He has some other shots of that gas station so I'll wack 'em up here though my Dodge is on the other side of the pumps, you can see the style of the gas station anyhow.

This one was either an old one that had a new building and pumps installed or just had the cover made in the old style (in hindsight I should have asked them )

I do love seeing the old fashion gas stations and we do still come across some old style Australian gas stations way out west ( in the " Outback " as it's known overseas ).

I couldn't believe the amount of people that flocked to the car wherever we pulled up anywhere on the trip home , taking photos of it and asking questions about it.

Being an extremely rare car to find in Australia and being LHD ( unusual to Australians ) and being a 53 year old survivor was probably it's draw card I guess.

More pics to come.

Hey Terry

Fin straightening is not an easy chore

I have not had to do it myself (hope never to have to), but I saw it done on an FB Holden.

Basically the welds that hold the inner and outer sides of the fin were drilled and the the 2 panels were repaired.

I think if you tried to bend the fin back while it was all still stuck together, you would make more of a mess.

Mick is correct, if the two panels are not taken apart for straightening, the stretched metal will buckle when you try to bend both panels back.

The car looks good, though, Terry.

Terry, isn't your car's windscreen cracked?

How do the authorities let you get away with that condition?

As previously PM'ed w/you, dual rear antennae would look bitchin on your sedan, in contrast with its flat black paint.

Also: you do not, necessarily, have to pay the MoPar-Tax in buying correct units; there are several very-similar other-
marque antennae which are readily available, and which appear very-much like 'ours' do.

Thanks for the input guys, it all helps.

I got a quote from a local panel beater yesterday . He said he would put in on his frame aligner and straighten it that way, but now I've read what you guys have said I might seek more than one opinion on it.

Mechanical repairs don't worry me as it's my trade ( or was 24 years ago ) but I really have no experience at all with panel beating other than making up small rust repair sections here and there on the various cars I've had over the years.

I might get some more photos showing the bend in the fin and the misalignment of the trunk lid for your appraisal.

I definitely do appreciate the help/advice,

Cheers,

Terry.

Hi Neil,

Yep, windscreen is badly cracked but I have a brand new one for it that came with the car.

I definitely wouldn't be able the register it for road use with the cracked windscreen as it is now and it looks like it's been cracked for a long time.

They did allow me to drive it as is with the rust issues and cracked windscreen on an unregistered vehicle permit as all the necessary safety related items ( ie:- brakes , lights, steering, suspension, tires etc etc etc ) were in a useable condition and it was only a one way temporary permit.

Yep, definitely agree Neil , twin antennae would look great. I'll definitely be looking for some once I sort out the rust issues and bent fin , and though I'd love a genuine MOPAR pair of antennae, I doubt whether I'd have the funds to afford gen-u-wine ones so aftermarket/non genuine ones will do the job for me.

Thanks for the reply,

Cheers,

Terry
