Member Posts: 38 ![]() Location: Surrey, BC, Canada | I installed Clifford headers on my 1961 Dodge Dart Pioneer wagon and needed a reduction starter to since the original direct drive starter would not fit. I ran a modified late model starter at first, but the shop that modified it said that the metal was machined pretty thin so I decided to look for a purpose-built unit. RobbMC makes starters for niche models and since he had a hemi starter I asked him about making a unit that would fit on my car. It took a while to work out the details but I put the starter in a couple of week sago and so far it starts like a charm every time. The cost was high - about $350 but I decided that if I avoided one tow I was ahead of the game. (RobbMC starter -1961 slant 6 A904 auto.jpg) Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Expert Posts: 1730 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Michigan | Yes. It does, I have it on my 56 PF. Bolted right in without issue. Nice thing is you can turn the motor and solenoid so it can be in almost any position depending on your headers and what you need. Expert Posts: 2524 ![]() ![]() Location: Houston | So is that starter any different than the usual Mopar min-starter? Does it use some sort of adapter plate?

Expert Posts: 1730 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Michigan | It might be the same. I am not sure. I did not have to purchase anything else but the starter. The mount is adjustable and that is the only 'adaptor' it has as part of the housing.

Expert Posts: 2524 ![]() ![]() Location: Houston | I talked to Hot Heads....their mini-starter that is $145 will fit some FL cars but not others. Apparently the 'bigger and later' Hemi's went to a 172 tooth ring gear and that will not work with the $145 starter. They do sell one that does work but it is $290.

Expert Posts: 2207 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Muskego, WI | That makes sense. I have a 172 tooth torque converter from a 392 Hemi behind my 354, would explain why I didn't get off so cheaply.

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10105 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: So. Cal | Looking at the Hot Heads site, I see a remanufactured starter that is supposed to work with '57-'59 for $95. It looks just like the standard Dakota starter, but there are 4 parts sitting next to it. Does anyone know what the difference is here to make a Dakota starter work on the '57-'59 and what those small parts are for? Expert Posts: 3828 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: NorCal | The RobbMC starter is designed so that the solenoid can be rotated to clear obstructions, in some positions the "drain" tube won't be on the bottom.

Fred, with the way those wires are crimped and hanging around there that probably won't be for long... ![]() That $350 starter deserves some proper connections.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5134 ![]() ![]() ![]() | Btw.... these power master servers will be in the way, the center link will hit and stop on the starter when you turn hard left on a 392 hemi fitted into a Dodge(its a half inch short to hit the stop at the hub).... I assume it's the same with a Plymouth and possibly others. I'm experiencing this right now.
