Expert Posts: 3888 Location: Northen Virginia | slow advance, I finished the valve body and the clutch packs, (specially thanks for Phil for the data and pics) and of course to all members who always put some input. weather is horrible, I can't paint the housing but I'm going to make an small oven to cook the epoxi paint, I can't wait no longer for the weather. Last night I changed all the bushings, which was and accomplishment in itself, seems like a few rebuilders do that, is noticeable the reduction of the side play on the components, even that the bushing looks fine there is a considerable wear on them. Expert Posts: 3888 Location: Northen Virginia | slow advance today, weather still horrible. My heater went down just a bit after I started, but at least I cleaned the trannie to perfection, I used a acid that converts rust in a brownish powder and grease in a white one. The job is completed by a wire brush, and the trannie is back to new again. Tomorrow is paint day, no matter what. I need to get my heater back to life. Expert Posts: 3888 Location: Northen Virginia | Finally weather improved, and my heater is running. Finished the housing with 4 layers of epoxy paint, but i used my own formula to make the cast iron color, since this particular tone is not available, came out good i guess. I assembled the 1-2-3 units in to it and valves, i painted the aluminum pieces with four epoxy layers plus 2 of clear coat. Definitely this is an over restored trannie but look good. If everything is good tomorrow the transmission will be done. Expert Posts: 3888 Location: Northen Virginia | I would just like to say that this is a perfect example of over engineering. This is basically a piece that could be in the SR-71, not in a car :). I had to build the special tooling required for the re assembly it, I also resurface the pumps, because they were very scratched. This nightmare is a double rotor pump, with so many thing that can go wrong in it. Phil can tell us a bit more about it, remember when his unit looked up. No wonder why this aluminum nightmare was replaced a few years later. Edited by hemidenis 2013-06-01 10:48 PM (image.jpg) Attachments ---------------- image.jpg (87KB - 194 downloads)

Elite Veteran Posts: 915 Location: Pau, S-W France | hemidenis - 2013-06-02 3:37 AM Phil can tell us a bit more about it, remember when his unit looked up. Ah, i remember this day, it was in july 2006 when i slow down to leave the highway !!! Suddenly no power assist, a lot of smoke from under the hood and this odor of burnt rubber !!! The rotor locked in the bore because there was a very tiny piece of metal and ruined the pump !!! Fortunately i had a spare but i need a trailer, i coudn't go home (40 miles) without belts (i had spare belts but i can't use them) which drive also the water pump. Here is the thread http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=11168&... Since that i bought another spare unit !!!! And yes you need a "special tool" to install the small tubes ... As i didn't have it (it was a long time ago, 1995 maybe), i used a lot of .... flat washers which gave me the correct height for each tube. Each tube needs different height, so 5, 8, 10 washers, etc ... The only requirement is that the washer must have just a smaller diameter than the tube bore ! Elite Veteran Posts: 915 Location: Pau, S-W France | About the decal, it was in the set i bought (from Gary Goers i think) and i can't see any other location because it's a warning message so must be closer to the filling hole. About pump i always see Thomson on Imperial and Chrysler. And Vickers on other '57 mopar. My '57 manual says: pump 1733 496 (Thomson) : C75, C76 ,IMP pump 1672 697: P30, D64, D72 pump 1733 496: D67 Can. built pump 1672 610; D66 /70 /71, D67 (US), S27 pump (Vickers) 1826 158 : D66 /70 /71, D67 (US), S 25 / 26 / 27 pump 1730892 : S 25/ 26

Expert Posts: 3888 Location: Northen Virginia | I just finished all the brake lanes, I know that someone make the comment about copper lines, but is the only think I could find. I used AC type lines in which walls are thicker than regulars. I also re-use the springs shields. Doc, I'm working in a surprise for you, I hope it will be completed over the weekend. Disabled? It's a problem with your thumbs? Location: Parts Unknown | The closest I get to a 50 is having helped with set up or take down. They are not a small or light weapon ! So, ... were your brake lines rusted away ? I have only needed to replace the VERY occasional brake line, due to sand/mud getting trapped behind one and rusting it out. At least in my part of the world, brake lines typically hold up forever.

Expert Posts: 3888 Location: Northen Virginia | Thanks guys! Doc, my pipes where a bit rusted on the outside, dirty on the inside too. Maybe still good for another 56 years of service but who can tell for sure. Biggest Problem is that both sides where smashed by the upper arm suspension (due to a missing bumper stop) making the arm squeeze the brake line against the frame. It is hard too see on the pictures the magnitude of the encounter but the spiral dented the frame! Talking about maintenance of the front end.... Who chek that rubber bumper? Well this could happen, believe or not. (image.jpg) (image.jpg) Attachments ---------------- image.jpg (118KB - 198 downloads) image.jpg (146KB - 190 downloads)

An important side note is that the differential cups listed on Timken website for 1957 imperial is not correct. The correct number is 25522. Tomorrow will be the time to complete the axle with differential axle and brakes.
