Location: The Mile High City | Several years ago, on our family trip to Yellowstone, my kids accidentally turned on the courtesy and map lights in the De Soto. It was during the daytime, so it was hard to notice they were on. Eventually, I found out and learned that the little GE-90 bulb in the map light fried the little plastic lens! In addition, on the same trip, I drove through Yellowstone park at dusk with the parking lights on. The rear lights were on long enough to fry the top lens on each side of the signal towers.
I replaced the top lens on each signal tower last year and installed light emitting diode bulbs on each side. But with the interior, I just tried to adjust my behavior and make sure the lights were never on too long. This eventually became a pain in the keester because I could not leave the parking brake warning light on for too long or the bezel would start to go thermo-nuclear. Today, I replaced all the hot spots with LEDs; now I am living the good life! I can keep those suckers on all day and night and not have to worry about frying the lens! All the lenses are cool as cucumbers!

Location: The Mile High City | It is a wonder any of the original lenses survived! I wonder if modern car batteries burn the bulbs brighter and hotter or if the modern bulbs are hotter? Why wouldn't these lenses have burned up long, long ago? |

Location: The Mile High City | Just in case, these folks were my source for the GE-90 replacement LEDs. They sent out a replacement right away when I told them one did not work. http://store.marinebeam.com/navigation-light-led-bulbs.html The LEDs were not cheap at $15 each, but it sure beats replacing a lens! |

Location: The Mile High City | August 2013 Update:
The map light and the courtesy lights have worked out well - however, the parking brake warning light is a different story. The first time I tried to install an LED bulb in there I had problems - the manufacturer sent out a new bulb right away. I installed the new bulb and it worked fine for a month, but now the new LED is not working! |
