I've finished pulling the manual steering, and installed the new power steering into the Desoto. Here's my problem. I have the copper piece now grounding the steering shaft. Now, the old horn ground wire under the hood went up through the shaft and connected to the horn button. I can't do that now. What's the trick??

Thanks guys,

Bruce

You have to run the horn wire back into the cabin of the car.

The horn wire goes into the plug thats for the indicator switch.

The indicator switch has a small wheel (brush) that rubs on the contact ring that you will also need under the steering wheel.

This is what I have found on the 60 models, I assume its the same (sort of) for the 57 and up, but not sure.

By the way, its best to run that horn wire back into the car with the orriginal wiring, not try to poke it through with the column and make a short cut.

I finally found some other information in another thread about this horn ring for the power steering horn button. Does anyone have install instructions or a photo of it installed?

Ok

I had a look at my steering whhels and I have one aero wheel with it fitted

What yo have to do is get the ring that has the self cancelling thing on it off, the horn ring has to go under it and then put the self cancelling thing back on.

The self cancelling thing holds it in place.

Do you have the correct indicator switch?

The first pic is of an aero with the ring in place, the rest are pics of a manual wheel with the horn contact sitting in (no self canceller), but it worked.

Its all 60 plymouth

Hey, I just did the exact same swap. Honestly the electrics were the biggest pain. Once you get it all together, you can adjust the column-to-steering wheel gap by moving the column jacket. This way you can have the correct contact between the roller contact and the copper ring on the steering wheel.

No kidding the electrics were a pain! Had to pull the column jacket several times not only to get the contact wheel and copper ring right, but the ground at the base of the column as well. My piece of copper was so mangled that we used some copper wire and all is well...so far. We finally finished up last weekend. Went to back the car out of the garage with the wife to test drive her new power steering and the rear brakes locked up. Has to be a stuck e-brake. Grrrr those brakes! Seriously thinking about a disk brake conversion!!
