Guys, is there a replacement for the shocks on a 56 Fury, i.e. are there more commonly available shocks from other cars I can install on the Fury? Shocks from a '68 Chevelle appear to be close, and a pair for that car cost $50 as opposed to $250 for the Rare Parts direct replacements.

Thanks!

Tommy

Vehicle shocks are one of those items that folks who are "the driver's" make a Hoopa-Hoopa Over and the stores want to sale ya what cost.

1. The Hard Way
Take one Front shock to a NAPA and ask of two more of "those". They should measure it and then compare the findings with what is in the books.

1a. The rear shocks have different spec's than what is in the front.

2. The Easy Way
Call NAPA to let them know that you have a V8 Powered 1956 Plymouth and need a set of shocks for the front and a set for the rear.

2a. See 1a above.

I run KYB's on my 56 Plymouth and have a set in my office for my 56 Dodge. Like Rodger said, there is some personal preference involved, and some go high tech and other go for the cheapest shocks they can find. They can be purchased almost anywhere and are under $40 each. KG4550 for the front and KG5511 on the rear.

So to add "3." to Rodger's list, you can use those numbers to see what those shocks fit and go from there . . . .

One important note, on the KYB's (and I assume other brands) you have to slightly enlarge the lower mounting slots for the front shocks to use the original mounting bolts.

The information is on this forum, but you may just have to broaden your search perimeters past 1956 Fury's. The shocks, for example, will be the same for all 1955-1956 Dodges & Plymouths (and most likely Desotos and Chryslers for the same years).

All shocks are like cheese. Some are not so low priced and some are priced so all can afford them. And as cheese they all have "a shelf life".

The same Rear Shocks were used in every division of The Chrysler Corporation from 1955 to 1993. This is from The Car Division's to The Truck Division's. All NAPA Stores carry
these Spec'd Per MoPar as #940-50.

Rodger, I thought that rears were pretty standard for a long period of time, but was unaware that they were the same for that long and across the truck line too. Good to know. Thank you!

And Tommy, that is where I get mine! Glad to pass on the information.

To Dave

The 1959 and 1963 Chrysler Corporation Parts Books both show that every vehicle of every division all used the same part number of front shocks.

Rodger,

I am still a beginner when it comes to Mopar specifics, I was just a car guy that married a mopar girl so I still need to rely on folks like you to fill my brain with useful knowledge. I did know that the front shocks were the same for a while after 1957 when the torsion bar suspension was introduced, but the 1956 and earlier king pin/spring front suspension use a different shock. Backs are the same.

Thanks again Rodger.

There's Threads here somewhere about using KYB shocks for a Corvette on the front of the 55-56s, with opening up of a mounting hole. '57 & up FL cars can use later-in-the- 60s-Mopar shocks by narrowing the bottom mounting tube, @ some point they widened the lower shock mount.

You are correct Mopar1, the KYB shock numbers I gave Tommy are for 63-82 Vettes and will fit the 55's -56's if the bolt slots on the bottom of the shock are enlarged slightly to fit the original mounting bolts.
