I'm beginning restoration of my '57 Dodge Coronet convert and wondered what the correct wheel color should be. The car is white with coral, original paint, and the wheels are black. I have seen photos of a same color car with the wheels painted coral. Does it make a difference, or are both correct? Any help is appreciated.

Wow. Nice car. Please post some photos.

Wheels for most 57-9 Dodges and Desoto Firesweeps should be gray with an off-white band around the edges. If your car was build in LA, it would have black wheels, I believe. BTW, wheels were never painted body color, despite what you see in the sales brochures. It would have been cost prohibitive for low margin cars like Plymouths and Dodges.

Am sure my wheels on my 59 Dodge have original paint, and they are a dull Black with a off-white band around the edges,

Had the front wheels off last week to do brakes, hence i remember the colour, As i have Full Covers on the wheels

.

This car was in storage in CA since 1977. It has the original paint; the body has no rust and is very nice. I had been searching for one since I sold my last '57 convert in 1967! I will post more as the restoration proceeds. Since I am retired I work on it 6 days a week, so hopefully it won't take too long to make it roadworthy.

As best I can tell, the original paint on my '57 DeSoto Firesweep's wheels (& spare) was dull black (not matte) on the outside surface, and dull gray on the inside surface, with a bit of overspray of the black over the gray here and there...if that helps?

Darryl (and Magnus!), we 1957 Dodge owners are in a unique position, relative to the color of our cars' wheels.

Thanks to Dodge's advertising agency, many (if not all) '57 Dodges are depicted having (-air brushed) body-colored
wheels on them.

The 'sad' fact is, all 57 Dodges, which were NOT built having the standard 'Dog Dish/Poverty' hub caps on them....(the
Doggies' wheels are apparently body-colored).....have the STANDARD corporate "Eggshell" colored wheels, but with that
color only being applied to the general outer-perimeter of the wheels.

Around the inner area (and slightly outboard of the wheel mounting-holes) the OEM dark gray wheel primer still exists).

So, if you are truly restoring your car, and if it has the full wheel covers on it, it will have Eggshell colored outer wheel areas.

If you want to have it look as pretty as possible, and wink-and-nod toward the advertising, you could paint the outer wheel
areas to match the main body color.

There are LOTS of OEM-photos showing the Eggshell-wheels on the cars, but here's a couple-few which show them
on dark-colored bodies.

As you can see in the bottom photo, there is some variance in the extent of the paint coverage
around the perimeter of the wheels...but, this is how OEM looks.
