Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Building a 318 poly for the first time...have a few questions from some veterans out there. (1960 Poly 318 motor) Have the long block assembled...so time to torque the head bolts., I know they are suppose to be torqued 65-75 lbs.., but was wondering the sequence to tighten them up?..tighten center out?....or is there a magical sequence? On the oil filter "disc"., is there suppose to be a gasket between the disk and the block?...so oil doesn't leak out?., my gasket kit didn't come with one. Lastly., wanna adjust the valve train before I put on the timing cover etc so I can make sure the timing is dead on before I button it up...what is the best way to adjust all of those rockers so they are ready to go when I start up the motor for the first time?...havn't built a solid lifter motor in a while. Thanks for all the advise. Guy

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | Ok Centre out for the head bolts Filter gasket will come with the new oil filter (I think, mine is a factory remote type, so a bit different) Rockers are supposed to be adjusted hot, I adjusted mine cold (as you want to do), but have not got to the hot adjustment yet. Mechanical (solid) lifters have to be adjusted properly or it can damage the valve train, so the hot adjustment is nessesary (rocker covers off again once she's all happy). Dont forget the 2000 rpm/20 min first start up to run the cam in I did this, but only after it idles for a few minuits so I could hear anything not right. Have fun, its so cool when it fires up

Do this in steps of torque with "each pass". On the third pass you should be at the MAX Torque of 70 foot pounds ( per 1962 Plymouth Division Factory Service Manual - Group 9-Page 63 ). 1b. After the engine has been operated - and allowed to cool ---- Re-Check all The Cylinder Head Bolts in The same manner. Rodger and Gabby Colo Spgs

Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Cool., thanks., same as on ford motors., just wanted to make sure...Thanks for the input... On adjusting the rockers., I am assuming just rotating the engine by hand to adjust each one of them so the valves open and close?....it seems like there is a lot of slack on the other push rods when the valves are closed? Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | You only adjust the valves in 2 spots. Literally, you bring the timing mark to the pointer, and you can adjust half the intake and half the exhaust valves. Then, you rotate the crank around and adjust the other half. Works like a charm.... Somewhere online, there should be a guide of which valves to adjust at each rotation.... As long as the firing order is the same, you can use the guide...

Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Thanks for the tips...I got the rockers adjusts now.....installed an aftermarket temp. Gauge so I can see the oppo rating temp when breaking it in. Had to drill out the factory temp sensor hole to accomodate the larger sensor...barely had enough room to do so, but it's in.
