Expert Posts: 1348 Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | I was wondering if there is a list of MOPAR dealers that I can find out where my car was shipped to from the factory? My punch card has the dealer code of 09658. I did find a 1961 Pennsylvania Auto Dealerships booklet in my glove box but unfortunately, they are not listed with # codes. It list dealerships for all makes. I wonder how many still exist? Thanks for any info, Karl.

Expert Posts: 1348 Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | Thanks. Sorry I missed this topic before. Shame there doesn't seem to be any pattern that at least I might have a state or zone so to narrow it down some. I wonder if the missing #s are none MOPAR dealers?

Expert Posts: 3778 Location: NorCal | I believe they just assigned dealer numbers as they were added, newest dealer could be in Maine and the previous one in California. The numbers missing from the list are simply ones not known by the members here.

Regular Posts: 89 | Generally, dealer codes for Chrysler were assigned in numeral sequence based on the dealers appointment date. The four digit dealers were the oldest (e.g., the ones that start with a "0"), generally appointed in the 1950's and earlier. After the early sixties, the first number of the dealer code indicated the "dominant" brand group. IIRC, "2" were Chrysler-Plymouth dealers, ""4" were Dodge, others numbers indicated "quad" dealers (C - P - D - Truck). Other first numbers, such as "8" were used for internal company use and such. If you get Chrysler Historical to pull and decode the IBM card for your 1967 or earlier car, usually they can look up the dealer code and tell you where the car was shipped to. Mark

Mark That would be an improvement on what I found in the early 1980s. Every month Historical got a printout of all active dealers. It was usually bound up in string and was probably 8-10 inches tall. Big problem was there was a huge pile of these stacks and at the time no one who actually worked there saw any value in them, and I believe they were periodically turfed. I also asked about dealer codes and was told (still can't believe this) that the numbers were RECYCLED. If dealer ABCDEF in Bent Nose New Jersey went out of business, the number could be reassigned to Tumbleweed Motors in Nowhere Nevada. The person I talked with about all of this claimed there was no way to track a specific number because of this. I also know that when a dealership changes hands, a new dealer code is assigned. I've been going to the same dealer in my town for nearly 40 years, and there have been at least 4 codes assigned to it because of a change in the dealer principal.

Regular Posts: 89 | I worked for Chrysler. I NEVER heard of a dealer code number being recycled. The code drove so many things, but especially invoicing and shipping information for cars and parts, that it would be crazy to reuse codes. Existing dealer codes could (but were not required for) change in a dealer principal change, depending on how the buy sell was structured. If a new dealer was willing to assume a past dealers inventory, parts invoices, etc. then the code did not change. However, this generally was somewhat rare. Most dealers wanted and got a clean break from the old dealers business, hence a new code. Mark
