Veteran Posts: 149 Location: Iowa | Recently picked up a steering wheel sold to me as a 1957 Dodge Coronet Steering wheel and horn ring. My question is why is the horn ring painted and not chrome? It look correct except that I have never seen one painted. Was this for the basic Coronet body? I assume it was painted to match the color of the dash. Extreme Veteran Posts: 580 | My 1958 Coronet has the Chrome horn ring with power steering. My 1957 Sierra has a black horn ring with manual steering. I'm not sure but maybe that is the reason.

To me, the picture looks like chrome is visible under the paint. The basic painted horn ring in 1958 (chrome was optional on the Coronets) was pot metal, primer, and paint.

Veteran Posts: 149 Location: Iowa | Thanks everyone. Here are some up close pix. The ring part nr appears to be X 1675722 DG. I looked at the scrapes. It appears to be a light gray/blueish color. Could be primer or could be a previous paint color. It is not chrome under it. The steering wheel is part number XJ 1675720. I bought them as a set but that doesn't mean they started out together. IDK thanks (horn ring nr.jpg) (horn ring surface.jpg) Attachments ---------------- horn ring nr.jpg (80KB - 215 downloads) horn ring surface.jpg (114KB - 208 downloads)

The single-color "plastic" steering wheel was standard on the Custom Royals (and maybe on the Royal models, too), with the two-tone plastic steering wheels being optionally available on all Dodge models. Again, the M.P.B. will identify all of the available colors and styles of the various steering wheels. The "Deluxe" 2-tone steering wheel should have a chromed horn 'ring' on it, and not (that-) painted horn ring. Edited by d500neil 2014-11-14 12:48 AM

The good thing about a painted die cast part is that they are usually not all pitted up and will chrome nicely

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | In 1957, there was/is a special, independent, chromed emblem that says "Power Steering" on it; manual steering Custom Royals and Royals didn't get that emblem on their horn rings. In 58, the Power Steering cars got a complete horn ring with "Power Steering" cast into it. So, a 57-58 manual steering car could have a (base-Coronet) painted or up-model chromed horn ring.

Expert Posts: 1906 Location: Ontario, Canada | I think there is a significant difference. 57 castings have grooves that FEEL very distinct whereas 58 grooves feel much less sharp and therefore much smoother. The 57 "flat" surfaces still feel a little rough (pebbled) whereas the 58 surfaces are all smooth castings. Greg

This horn ring happens to be installed in a Custom Coronet model...but, the chrome horn ring, itself, was not included within the Custom Coronet option group.....altho it SHOULD have been included in the 'Custom' option group!
