Welcome aboard the band-wagon, Brian!

Um, what "chance" are you placing, now, that the car might be in pretty-good condition?

I'm on-board, from the beginning, as saying that it will be in PERFECTLY good condition!

But, I will be there, to see it, whatever condition it's in, on June 15, 2007.

BTW, that article explains precisely what those sheets are, as are seen in the preparation-for-burying video.

Looking at the old video I'm guessing one of 2 things has happened, either the vault witheld all moisture and the car is in excellent condition or the seal around the top cracked and the entire vault is FULL of water from the sprinklers above. Hope it's not the later but if water was able to get in it was not able to get out, 50 years of watering the grass is along time.

Hey, Greg, welcome aboard!

A perusal of the website's Archived Discussion shows an earliest-still-recorded thread, on this subject, at the end of 1999!!!!

Seven.five years ago, and finally, ALL shall be revealed... (that is, after Boyd Coddington's co-conspirators get done cleaning the car,
from its 50 year internment, immediately after its removed, under-a-shroud, from its subterranean garage!!)....in ONE MONTH
from today!!!!

Hi,

I won't be able to make it myself, but I really hope to get a lot of info, pictures and movies from the unearthing!!!
Please do put links to any footage of the unearting and the condition of the car on the net!!!! please!

Greetings from the Netherlands

Mathieu
(looking at the care that these people took in 1957 my guess would be that the car is in mint condition except from stuck roller bearings, water-pump and pistons. Bus as it has never been exposed to strong sunlight etc. the paint and interior will be like new! (who has ever seen this nice shade of gold colour paint just like it was made in 1957!!!!!) WOW!

Not only the paint, should be good, but, as the car was (apparently) stored with its wheels off-the-ground, the TIRES ought
to be in mint condition, but hardened, as they have not been subjected to UV light, or heat!!!

The vault as seen in photos appears to be single poured with sloping sides at the bottom (like a bathtub but not as severe). The lid as I have read is actually in three parts. This could be a problem if they were simply butted together end to end and not sealed or overlapped, I simply do not know. However, I read that the lids were sealed to the lower vault using thick tar on the lip of the vault or a tar like substance. If this stayed intact, then that is good news. Now I also saw in a video that they were spraying concrete even with the lid open. that is called (I believe Gunite? spraying) The lids had large metal rings in them that were used to lower them into place. Then all three lids were sprayed over with a thick layer of (Gunite?) Concrete. It must have survived as the crew responsible for digging up the Plymouth have already unearthed the top of the sprayed Gunite on the three lids and they had to chisle or jackhammer down several inches to find the rings for lifting the lids of which they did find them. Once this was done they resealed the Gunite covering and covered the earth back over the vault. This was done to preserve it until 3 days before the 15th of June, when they will actually restart to excavate down to the lids again and lift them off to remove the car on the 15th of june.
They will take their time (three days to get it to the point where they can bring the car up on the 15th at the exact moment planned. Now as for the condition of the car. There are several factors to consider including the contents of the car. Many questions woudl have to be answered to be able to know what affect these things will have had on the car and the vault. The car was placed on a steel skid, however I do know the axles had jacks placed underneath them. I also think they had somethign between the steel skid and the car. The car was sealed in a COSMOLINE like substance if this is true and that is what it says, then the parts covered in cosmoline and not exposed, should be liek new. There is also some evidence that a huge plastic bag was manufactured to bury the car in and the air was sucked out of the bag. If this is true and there is some evidence of it, then barring total submergance and a tear in the bag. the car shoudl be pristine. However, was the fluids left in the car? if so they could have long ago damaged the engine or leaked out and ate thru the protective covering. I do know that photos show the car wrapped and tied in a covering. In car had a full tank of gas...varnish now? Also a large 10 gallon tank containing 10gals of gas and some oil in cans or jars? My guess is if no water got in and the vault is sealed the car is pristine.
My bet is that if there is no submergance and the bag is still intact around the car.. it is in perfect condition.
I'm betting it is PRISTINE. I hope documentary video is being made from start to finish as this is History!! I mean even video of the test digging done by the excavating crew. Someone should insist that this is atleast being filmed.
MY BET IS PRISTINE!!

Hey, Ralph; where-ya located & do you have any finned car(s)?

One month from now (Exner-willing) "most-everyone" will be back-home, with memories (good & whatever!) , mementoes,
photos, stories, and credit-card billings!!

But, the experience will have been PRICELESS!

Truly, it shall have been a once-in-a-LIFETIME experience.

Hi Azimuth,

I agree with you.
People were not that stupid in the 50's, they were able to make some good quality things.
I believe some even better than today! (just look at the cars!! I'm sure a car from 2007 is quite worth- and useless in 2057 with all this cheap plastic and poor electronic circuits...)

Of course they were able to make a concrete vault that lasts over 50 years without leaking water.
Otherwise all cellars of buildings built before 1957 would be filled with water or all these buildings would collapse! No way.
These days people took more care in what they were doing, that's my guess.

And they made fantastic cars!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I've been watching the Radar Range ("Airplane!"), thinking about bringing along my hip boots; hopefully,
the good burghers thought to install some sort of shroud, over the exposed lid.

What IS the water ground-table depth, in Tulsa?

idk but i can say the hundred year flood ( in the early 80's before i arrived) was a big one but it didn't get downtown. at least not where the plymouth is. i'm not sure on the water table depth.

Its been a wet season this year so its a little higher then normal.

Has anyone gone through and read this again for fun? Now that we know what happened, it's entertaining at the very least to read the "guesses" people have made on this.

Well, to quote Warren Beatty, in "McCabe & Mrs. Miller"
"If frogs had wings, they wouldn't bump their ass".

And: if that dumb-baggee, wrapped around the car had proved to be water-proof (for 50 years---and, no one
could have predicted dismal failure; or: if the car could have been put into a welded-up steel container, like the Time Capsule was) , then, a new-car would have come up out of that vault.

Most of the pre-unearthing discussion had to do with whether the vault had been truly water-tight.

If the BAGGEE had been water-tight, then the Codpiece WOULD have had a promotional field day, with her!

I'm working on it! I've taken her to a few local cruise nights in the Belvedere. For "some" reason, people (especially men) LOVE talking to her about the car...
