Expert Posts: 3480 Location: Montreal, Canada | I bought a stash of colour stereoview factory pictures of Dodge-DeSoto of Canada for 1958. Sorry for the poor quality, the originals are super sharp, but it's very hard to scan a stereoview slide. I know that posting these here will certainly lead to some anti-plodge comment by Doc, but I'm willing to take that risk! Here they are: Edited by soiouz 2015-05-28 9:26 PM

They both wear the standard Dodge or DeSoto hubcaps, similar as US. I have the same dodge hubcaps on mine. (image.jpg) Attachments ---------------- image.jpg (146KB - 168 downloads)

Expert Posts: 3480 Location: Montreal, Canada | mstrug - 2015-05-29 7:24 AM I like the 'silver special' sedan and 2 door wagons! It's a Dodge Crusader, the Plodge equivalent to the Plymouth Plaza. It wears the Plaza/Crusader optional sportone, but it is not a Silver Special, which was a spring offering.

That's why I own two of them! As for the Mayfair convertible, I don't know if you noticed but the front valence is painted body colour on it. That must have been a pre-production thing, as I have never seen that anywhere else. Stunning car in a beautiful colour combo. Is yours currently in restoration?

Regular Posts: 82 Location: Eastern Manitoba | Right now not much is happening with my convertible, my kids are pretty young right now and I don't have much garage time so restoring will have to wait. Currently I am just gathering missing pieces for it . I had not noticed that painted valence, I will have to look at mine when i get home, and see if it has orange paint underneath.

Regular Posts: 82 Location: Eastern Manitoba | I looked at the valence on my mayfair, it has the original copper/orange colour on the valence. This car has had one repaint, (in lavender) so it is pretty easy to tell what is the original paint.

Expert Posts: 1906 Location: Ontario, Canada | David, what did they say about the third photo? Looks like a USA model to me. Complete with the white wheels. Always looked poor to me, you know, extra wide horrible two tone WIDE white walls. I like the CDN argent wheels as on your car much better! Greg

Greg It just says Dodge Custom Royal convertible on the stereoview card. Since all convertibles were US built, it is in fact a US model. The custom royal coupe photos looks odd too with the rear so high, the standard caps and the double strut mirrors.

Expert Posts: 3480 Location: Montreal, Canada | Thanks for the good words everyone, I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures! As a side note, I'll be trying to have reproductions made of the nice "Flookerang 1958" license plate these cars are wearing. I'll open up a new thread on them when I'm ready, to see if there is any interest.

Do you know what viewer was used for those stereoview pictures - I guess that it's not View Master No, it's a small, folding, cardboard viewer that was provided with the slides in a neat, dark brown vinyl "Step Ahead With the Forward Look" enveloppe. All original, rare, promotional kit! I'll post pics of the whole thing later today.

I think a few dodge ones were missing from memory ? Sorry I beat you, but I really wanted it!! Missing? What do you mean? There are no slides missing in the kit, it would be impossible to fit even one more in the vinyl enveloppe. I don't think it was ever intended to have one of each model of that year.

Did you see the Canadian 58 Desoto Dodge Data book last week on ebay , a rare find I missed that also , he had 56 58 59 books for sale http://www.ebay.com/itm/1958-Salesman-Dealer-Data-Book-Dodge-DeSoto...

I did not bid, because I already have them (1957, 1958 and 1959). Final selling price were crazy, 435$ for the 58 one and 300$ for the 59!!

I remember why I thought there were slides missing now , it was because not all the Desoto slides were there , then I remember its a Canadian book , so models are different . So excuse my mistake !

I have since found another 58 book which was in better condition, so I have sold the first one... For 100$, not 435$!!! Hahaha

Even at $400.00 (w/shipping), I'd call that purchase "Well Bought", given the completeness and condition of it..and, due to its rarity!! That 1958 CAN 3-D viewer is a LOT more sophisticated in its construction, than is its 1958 US-counterpart.

Wonder if this ride was upgraded, for pulling a trailer, or for performance, etc? This car does not have an owner per se, as these shots are all factory/publicity photos. I think this is just a case of a car built with an exceptionaly high rear end...

Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | It's more than merely having an abnormally high-riding rear end.... Most-all 57-59) advertising images feature 'slammed' low-riding chasses for/on the FWDLK'ers; some of the advertised rides could not have survived in the Real World. These Low Riders' images were created to accentuate the length and lowness of the cars. It may be a brief one, but there is a 'story' behind the appearance-creation of this car. David, your car's image, above, is a lot more professionally composed and arranged (human interest angle) than is the one that happens to be illustrated....which appears to have been a 'snapshot', taken in somebody's "Low Rent" back yard...yeah; I know; there's another photo taken in the same place...but, my question concerns itself with the presence of that HIGH-Rider, in the photo.
