Any interested in plastic headliner bows?

I am talking to a local extruder about making them, would come in a spool and i can cut to length, little more flexible and last alot longer.

I could have them chrome painted to replace the stainless versions also since I have a local guy.

I know 57-58 plymouths used the two strips and my 57 royal used about 5.

Did all these cars use them?

I'm interested. 1957/8 Plymouth long. You need to put out a firm price. Plated and unplated. Marc. I think all 'hard tops' had strips and sedans had bows / headliners of fabric or vinyl.

Wagons had plastic strips too.

And the wagons used those plastic strips at least to 1970, maybe even later.

Does anyone else sell them? except for the evil mel.

Im expecting the price to be a lot lower but depends upon the final cost/how much made. I think it might be half his price.

I don't know why people reproduce these strips incorrectly. The "other" ones on the market are also incorrect and just look wrong. The original strips were made of clear material and vacuum chrome metalized on the reverse side. The result of this, when viewed from the front side, is 2 dark strips running the length of the extrusion created by the vacuum chrome metalizing being further away on the "legs".
This is not impossible to duplicate, and then they would look 100% correct instead of these incorrect looking strips that are chrome finish over the entire front side.
I can think of 5 cars down here that you would have sales for especially if they are correct and more realistically priced than the others available.
If you made these correct. the "other" guy would never sell another set ever again.
Glenn.

okay I am getting a quote on tooling. Also this will be "clear" hard plastic thanks to Fury! The guy said "no problem" to clear hard plastic. It won't go brittle for over 200 years the guy said in the heat and cold, I have a few options as I could run solid colors also. It can be chrome painted behind (for fury) on top for a stainless look(its a white chrome) or it can be painted cream(white) or whatever to match the other cars. You will be able to order unpainted or painted/chromed(I will find out the additional cost) but it is pretty reasonable. Once I get the final price for the tooling. I am expecting to run over 1000 feet. I may also do a group buy and offer a discount for the initial buyers to help defer start up cost. I will find out once I get the quote on tooling. This will be a exact replacement using an extrusion machine like Chrysler did. I am predicting around 60$-70$ a rib. I will offer different lengths obviously for different vehicles and ship worldwide.

PS I may look at putting them on Ebay for worldwide sales.  They get some great prices on global shipping through their worldwide shipping program.(It all leaves out of one place).

I shipped a steering wheel to europe for 20$... I can't ship 5 states over for that.

This is sounding very positive.
How do they plan on chrome plating the reverse side?
You would be onto a winner here if you can get this underway for the costs mentioned.
Glenn.

chrome painted, with clear coat.  It might be too good of a finish though.

Okay I have my startup tooling and initial run/setup cost.

Once the word is out and initial buyers are gone I may put them on ebay.

The finish is clear hard(yet flexible) plastic and exact dimensions, the quality is top notch.

It can be painted/chrome foiled on the front or back depending upon the finish desired.

I am getting a cost for chrome painting soon, I don't believe this would need clear coat on the back?

I think you could finish these to mimick the stainless ribs on the Desotos/Chryslers? I know those didn't go bad of course so it is probably only if you are missing
these.

The chrome foil should copy stainless near exactly on the outside depending upon the foil/finish.

The "underneath" has to be exact for the rear chroming so it shows up like factory. I know the factory clear strips would yellow over time, this wont happen
with these strips.

I am looking at making a group buy(take a deposit, stuff shows up in 2 months).

I will probably create a site for this and try to give links to headliner info(like the 57 dodge "pattern") for the perforated headliner I have scanned in.

After doing the math(I will start a separate thread for the group buy if that's allowed)...

Price for the Plymouths for the group buy will be 50$ a strip in the group buy un-chromed. Im expecting chrome painting to be maybe 20$ a piece?

Dodge and wagons (4 shorter strips or how many you need) will run about 45$ a piece.

I was talking to some distributors on micro perforated hardboard(to replace the whole vinyl glueing process) but that is still under research.

I will be going to Carlisle also and some other mid west shows so I can drop them off there.

Before I start hunting though can anyone post what cars/makes/models/trims used these retainer strips/ribs if you happen to know.

I know these are used 57-mid 60's.
57-59 Plymouths 2 dr hts and wagons 60? 61? (2 dr hts use 2 longer strips)
57-59 Dodges 2 dr hts and wagons (2 dr hts use 4 strips).?

Desotos? Imperials? Chryslers? they all used stainless right?

attached is the chrome paint example.

Me too. 2 sets at least, probably more down here in NZ once I spread the word. You can post them all to the same address and we can distribute them no problem.

In addition, I can provide you with the matching end caps, long and short version. Please refer to this thread http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=58930&...

Please give me short reply via PM with your expression of interest. No need for a binding order as I have no price yet. If there is no further demand, I only produce 5 sets for those I already know who need them.
